Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "All My Loving" was the first Beatles song that American audiences heard sung live in their country. Who was the lead vocalist?

Answer: Paul

"All My Loving" was written by Paul McCartney and appeared on the 1963 UK album "With the Beatles", which was released in the USA as "Meet The Beatles!"
A single was a number one hit in Canada. Although not officially released in the USA, enough copies were imported to make it a number 45 on the Billboard charts.
This, incidentally, was the first song that American audiences heard the Beatles sing in the Land of the Free - during their seminal "Ed Sullivan Show" appearance in February 1964.
McCartney wrote the song as a poem for his then girlfriend Jane Asher.
2. "Don't Pass Me By" was a Beatles sing that topped the charts in Denmark. Which of the Fab Four sang lead vocals?

Answer: Ringo

"Don't Pass Me By" was written by Ringo Starr and appeared on the 1968 album
1968 "The Beatles", aka "The White Album".
It is thought to have been Ringo's first solo composition, and was a chart topper in Denmark.
3. "Help!" was a plea by a Beatles member. Who sang lead vocals on this 1965 chart-topper?

Answer: John

Help!" was written by John Lennon and appeared on the 1965 UK album of the same name. The single was a number one hit in both the USA and the UK.
In a 1971 interview with "Rolling Stone" magazine, Lennon described "Help!" as one of his favourite Beatles records. "I meant it - it's real. The lyric is as good now as it was then. It is no different, and it makes me feel secure to know that I was that aware of myself then. It was just me singing 'Help' and I meant it."
4. "Across the Universe" was a track the Beatles contributed to a charity's album. Who sang lead vocals?

Answer: John

"Across the Universe" was written by John Lennon.
It first appeared on a charity album for the World Wildlife Fund in 1969 and was reprised, slightly differently, on the 1970 album "Let It Be".
Lennon later said: "I was lying next to my first wife in bed, and I was irritated. She must have been going on and on about something and she'd gone to sleep and I kept hearing these words over and over, flowing like an endless stream.
"I went downstairs and it turned into sort of a cosmic song rather than an irritated song... it drove me out of bed. I didn't want to write it, but I was slightly irritable and I went downstairs and I couldn't get to sleep until I'd put it on paper."
5. You'll know just how lucky you are if you can remember which of the Beatles sang lead vocals on "Back in the U.S.S.R." Who was really knocked out by Ukraine girls?

Answer: Paul

"Back in the U.S.S.R." was written by Paul McCartney and appeared on the 1968 album "The Beatles".
This was written while the Beatles were in India and uses imagery similar to that in Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A."
In a 1984 interview published by "Playboy" magazine, McCartney said: "I wrote that as a kind of Beach Boys parody. And "Back in the USA" was a Chuck Berry song, so it kinda took off from there. I just liked the idea of Georgia girls and talking about places like the Ukraine as if they were California, you know? It was also hands across the water, which I'm still conscious of."
The song reached number 19 in the UK singles charts.
6. "All Things Must Pass" was a Beatles song that was almost forgotten about. Who sang lead vocals?

Answer: George

"All Things Must Pass" was written by George Harrison and appeared on the 1996 album "Anthology 3".
The "Anthology" series comprised compilation albums released by Apple Records. They featured some rare and some alternative track recordings from the early Beatles period.
7. "Blue Jay Way" was a Beatles song written about San Francisco. Which of the Beatles sang lead vocals?

Answer: George

"Blue Jay Way" was written by George Harrison for the 1967 album "Magical Mystery Tour".
It took its name from a place where Harrison stayed in San Francisco. Many influences picked up by Harrison in India were used here - although in a Western musical style.
8. "Paperback Writer", a thousand pages, give or take a few, but only one Beatles lead vocalist. Which one?

Answer: Paul

"Paperback Writer" was written by Paul McCartney and was a number one hit in seven countries.
It appeared in the UK on "A Collection of Beatles Oldies" and in the USA on "Hey Jude."
This was actually the first Beatles number one that was not about love. McCartney later said he had been nagged by a relative to write a song that was not about love. "We always try to do something different. And this idea's a bit different. Years ago my Auntie Lil said to me, 'Why can't you ever write about a horse or the summit conference or something interesting?' So I thought, 'All right, Auntie Lil. I'll show you.'"
9. Only one of the Beatles originally sang on "And I Love Her." Which of them was it?

Answer: Paul

"And I Love Her" was written mostly by Paul McCartney, with some additions by John Lennon, and appeared on the 1964 UK album "A Hard Day's Night", which was released as "Something New" in the USA.
The single reached number 12 in the US Billboard Hot 100, but was not released in the UK.
McCartney always insisted that the song was not about any one person: "It's just a love song; no, it wasn't for anyone," he told "Playboy" Magazine.
It was to become one of the most covered Beatles songs of all.
Paul was the only Beatle to sing on the record.
10. There's nothing you can do that can't be done, so, please tell me: who sang lead vocals on the Beatles hit "All You Need Is Love" ?

Answer: John

"All You Need Is Love" was written by John Lennon for a global television show - "Our World" - in June 1967. An estimated 400 million people watched the show.
The Beatles sequence was broadcast semi-live from Abbey Road studios. (They were overdubbing onto a previously recorded track.)
The single was a chart topper in the the UK and USA and was to appear on "Magical Mystery Tour" in the USA.
