Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In December 1988, "The Hardest Working Man In Show Business" became inmate number 155413 as he began a six year sentence for failing to stop for a police officer and aggravated assault. Who was this "Godfather of Soul"?

Answer: James Brown

Brown had several run- ins with the law before his spell in the big house but 1988 was a busy year for him. He was arrested in April for assault, in May on drugs and weapon charges and then again in September for the offences that led to his jail time. He served three years of his six year sentence. Brown died in 2006.
2. Which former Beatle spent ten days in a Japanese jail before being deported, for bringing eight ounces of cannabis into the country in 1980?

Answer: Paul McCartney

McCartney was arrested at the Tokyo airport after flying in to begin a tour of Japan with Wings. He has also been arrested for cannabis possession in Sweden, Scotland, USA and Barbados and is a long time advocate of cannabis legalisation. In 2015, after almost 50 years of smoking cannabis, he decided to quit in order to set a good example to his grand children.
3. Which soul star served a year in jail in 1993 for drunken driving and assault by auto which contributed to the death of a pedestrian? There is no word on whether this occurred in daylight, or "in the midnight hour".

Answer: Wilson Pickett

Following this incident, Pickett's manager said, "Wilson Pickett's worst enemy is Jack Daniels." Prior to this escapade, Pickett had been ordered to vacate his house in 1992 after a disagreement with his neighbour, the local mayor, resulted in Pickett driving his car on the mayor's lawn, ruining it and following this incident, Pickett was arrested again in 1996 for breaking the terms of his probation by taking cocaine and beating his girlfriend up.
4. Bluesman Huddie William Ledbetter, was imprisoned in 1915 for carrying a firearm, but managed to escape from the chain gang only to kill a man in 1918 in a fight over a woman. By what name is this musician better known?

Answer: Lead Belly

Lead Belly served the minimum term of his seven to 35 year sentence and was released and pardoned in 1925 after writing a song to the governor, begging for his release. In 1930 Lead Belly was back behind bars for attempted homicide and in 1939 he was there again for assault after stabbing a man in a fight. He died in New York City in 1949.
5. Ronald Isley of The Isley brothers has found great fame and surely made a tidy fortune during his 60 plus year career. For what crime was he sentenced to three years in the big house in 2006?

Answer: Tax Evasion

Isley was released in April 2010 and is listed as one of California's most delinquent taxpayers. With the Isley brothers, his career stretches back to 1954, and although they have had four top ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100, they have not managed a number one. The closest they managed was number two in 1969 with "It's Your Thing."
6. Known as "Lady Day", one of the greatest jazz singers ever was sentenced in 1947 to one year and one day in prison for narcotics possession. Under what name did she record and perform?

Answer: Billie Holiday

Birth name, Eleanora Fagan, and famed for recordings such as "Strange Fruit", "God Bless The Child", "T'ain't Nobody's Business If I Do" and "My Man", Holiday's tale is a tragic one. An absent father, a teenage mother and being court ordered to attend a school for troubled African American girls was her childhood.

She was sexually abused at the school and by the age of 14 was working in New York as a $5 prostitute. In 1941, age 26 she was a heavy drinker and married, adding her husband's opium habit to her list of vices.

The marriage didn't last, and her dependency on alcohol and drugs, now including regular heroin use, grew, culminating in her arrest in 1947. She said of the trial, "It was called 'The United States of America versus Billie Holiday'. And that's just the way it felt", a feeling which was made greater by the refusal of her lawyer to attend the trial. Due to her conviction, she was ineligible for the necessary license to play in cabarets and clubs, so instead played a comeback concert at Carnegie Hall in 1948 to a sell out crowd. By 1959, Holiday was suffering severe heart and liver problems and was admitted to hospital, where she was arrested for heroin possession, so great was her addiction that she had taken some with her. Lady Day died on July 17, 1959, from alcohol and drug related complications.
7. Which member of The Mamas and The Papas escaped with just a one month sentence of a possible 45 years for drug trafficking in 1981?

Answer: John Phillips

Phillips had a powerful drug habit by the mid-70s, admitting that at one point he was shooting up every 15 minutes. With the help of a Manhattan pharmacist, he funded his drug habit by using fake prescriptions to obtain bottles of pharmaceutical drugs which he would then trade for cocaine with local dealers. Following his conviction, he embarked on a high profile anti drugs publicity tour and although he never took drugs again, he developed an equally debilitating alcohol addiction, which required a liver transplant in 1992. Phillips died in 2001 of heart failure.
8. In 1991, who missed his own induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as he had been sentenced to four years in the big house in 1990 for cocaine possession. Luckily the other half of the duo, Annie Mae Bullock did attend.

Answer: Ike Turner

Turner's cocaine habit started in 1960 and he estimated that by the early 70s he was spending $56,000 a month on the drug and at one point was impersonating a police officer and confiscating crack cocaine from other addicts for his own use. He served 18 months of his sentence before being paroled and managed to kick the habit during this time, but in 2004, while trying to help a friend overcome his addiction to crack, he relapsed.

In December 2007, Turner died from a cocaine overdose.
9. In 1994, a year after being arrested for heroin possession, country rock star Steve Earle was sentenced to a year in prison for cocaine possession. In which TV show did he play the part of Walon, a recovering drug addict and drug rehabilitation counselor?

Answer: The Wire

Earle, as Walon made appearances in three seasons of "The Wire" and also starred Harley Watt in both seasons of cult hit show "Treme". He served 60 days of his one year sentence and since becoming sober has written some of his best work, including the Grammy-nominated album, "Transcendental Blues" in 2000.
10. In 2009, who started a 15 month sentence for falsely imprisoning a man, handcuffing him to a wall fixture and subjecting him to violence. Hopefully his first question to fellow inmates was "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?"

Answer: Boy George

George blamed his years of cocaine use for his behaviour and since his release has practised Buddhism, which he credits for his sobriety. He served just four months of his sentence but did have wear an ankle tag and submit to a curfew for the remaining 11 months.
