Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Right, let's have a civilised start to this musical bender: who sang "Sherry" way back in 1962?

Answer: The Four Seasons

Led by Frankie Valli, The Four Seasons had a US number one with "Sherry", it got to number eight in Britain.
2. No time for sherry this lot, strictly "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers".

Answer: Motorhead

A minor chart success for Lemmy and the boys; "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" reached number 43 in 1980. It was released as a follow-up to "Ace of Spades".
3. Which of these acts posted a big hit in 1998 with "The Boy is Mine"?

Answer: Brandy

Brandy Norwood took "The Boy is Mine" right to the top of the American charts, in the UK it reached number two.
4. Which band were singing about "Cigarettes and Alcohol" in 1994?

Answer: Oasis

"Cigarettes and Alcohol" was the second top-ten single for Oasis, it reached number seven. Oasis also sing about a "Champagne Supanova" but that's another story.
5. Can you remember the unhappy place that Slim Dusty found himself in?

Answer: A Pub With No Beer

An Aussie with no beer! That's a serious situation for sure; Slim Dusty took this unhappy ditty to number three way back in 1959. It was Slim's only chart success outside of Australia, he was probably too dry to sing any more!
6. This track was never released as a single in Britain but "Tequila Sunrise" is still one of their best known shots. If you can still focus pick the right group.

Answer: The Eagles

Somewhat surprisingly The Eagles only took "Hotel California" into the British top-ten; it reached number eight in 1977. I don't think they were too worried however as (including compilations) they have had seven top-ten albums.
7. It's getting late on this pub-crawl and some are starting to falter; who was getting maudlin with "What Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser out of Me)" back in 1972?

Answer: Rod Stewart

"WMMFHMALOOM" was a double 'A'-side with the slightly shorter titled "Angel". Rod got to number four with this coupling; his previous two singles had both got to number one.
8. Which Irish band's second album was called "Rum, Sodomy and the Lash"?

Answer: The Pogues

The title was taken from a quotation by Sir Winston Churchill when referring to the Royal Navy. The album contains many songs with references to drinking but also a great version of Eric Bogle's "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda".
9. Now people are really struggling; over in the corner is a "Gin-Soaked Boy". Who is singing about him?

Answer: The Divine Comedy

A rare serious song from Neil Hannon for his band The Divine Comedy, usually he has his tongue placed firmly in his cheek. "Gin-Soaked Boy" reached number 38 in 1999.
10. OK you've survived! But what about the morning after? Which of these acts sang "Old Red Eyes Is Back"?

Answer: The Beautiful South

This cautionary tale about drinking was a hit for The Beautiful South in 1992. Hic!...
