Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What album does "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" appear on?

Answer: Bat Out of Hell

An absolutely ground-breaking album, several years in the making, it was not initially well received by record companies. While they wanted fun, easy dance music, this album gave them long Wagnerian rock operas with massive crescendos. Word has it that the songwriter was even asked once if he had ever even listened to a rock and roll album.
2. Who wrote "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" and all the other songs on the album?

Answer: Jim Steinman

Steinman had written a musical called "More than You Deserve", and one of the actors in the musical was Marvin Lee Aday. While the musical did nothing, Steinman realized that Aday, better known as "Meat Loaf", was just the kind of theatrical performer that could bring his brand of music to life. Todd Rundgren produced the album.
3. Who is the female singer in "Paradise by the Dashboard Light"?

Answer: Ellen Foley

Ellen Foley sang on the album, while Karla DeVito sang the song on tour and on the video. Mrs. Loud was the name credited to the female singer on "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" off of "Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell". Suzi Quatro sang the duet "Stumblin' In" with Chris Norman. Alicia Bridges sang "I Love the Nightlife (Disco Round)."
4. The female singer in "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" later starred on what TV show?

Answer: Night Court

You may remember Markie Post as public defender Christine Sullivan on "Night Court", but Post didn't have the role until the third season. Prior to that, Ellen Foley played public defender Billie Young for 20 episodes (Source imdb.com).
5. Who is the play-by-play announcer during the baseball sequence?

Answer: Phil Rizzuto

As the boy and the girl make out in the car, Hall of Fame shortstop and longtime New York Yankee announcer Phil Rizzuto announces the baseball game in the background--with the progress of the game and the progress of the boy probably about the same... "Holy Cow, I think he's gonna make it... STOP RIGHT THERE!"
6. "Stop right there! I gotta know right now, before we go any further. Do you love me? Will you love me forever? Do you need me? Will you never leave me? Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life? Will you take me away, will you make me your wife?" What is Meat Loaf's answer?

Answer: Let me sleep on it

The other three options are lines from other songs on "Bat Out of Hell". Meat Loaf answers "Let me sleep on it. Baby, baby, let me sleep on it. Let me sleep on it, I'll give you an answer in the morning." In the video/live performances of this song, this is a great part, as Meat Loaf and his female partner grab the microphone from each other and become increasingly more animated as the scene continues--"I gotta know right now, before we go any further, do you love me? Will you love me forever?"
7. What happens to the boy and girl at the end of the song?

Answer: They get married, grow to hate each other, but won't separate

"I couldn't take it any longer, Lord I was crazed, and when the feeling came upon me like a tidal wave, I started swearing to my God and on my mother's grave that I would love you 'til the end of time, I swore, I would love you 'til the end of time.

"So now, I'm praying for the end of time to hurry up and arrive, cause if I've got to spend another minute with you I don't think I can really survive. I'll never break my promise or forget my vows, but God only knows what I can do right now. I'm praying for the end of time, it's all that I can do! Praying for the end of time so I can end my time with you."

One of the greatest climaxes to a song, even if it is rather negative. The tension in the song builds throughout to this section, which is sung much faster and more intense than the rest of the song.
8. What comes next: "It was long ago, and it was far away, and..."

Answer: It was so much better than it is today

"Now I live with the upstairs neighbor, Ray"--Okay, that would be John Cusack's girlfriend in "High Fidelity."

No, here in "Paradise by the Dashboard Light", they're still together but not exactly thrilled about it. This line, along with "It never felt so good, it never felt so right, and we were glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife" accompany the fadeout at the very end of the song.
9. How did this song do on the Billboard Hot 100?

Answer: Number 39

It was loved by many who heard it, but at 8:28, it was just too long for most radio stations to want to play it. It has definitely stood the test of time, though, with the album selling over 37,000,000 copies, and the song now regularly gets airplay on classic rock stations. [Source: Wikipedia]
10. At 8 minutes, 28 seconds, the triple medley "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" is about twice as long as the typical rock and roll song. Lengthwise, where does it rank among the songs on "Bat Out of Hell"?

Answer: Third-longest

"For Crying Out Loud" comes in at 8:45, and the title track "Bat Out of Hell" is just under 10 minutes in length at 9:48. All together, the seven songs on "Bat Out of Hell" come in at 46:33, about the same length as a typical 10-song rock album.

Most of Jim Steinman's songs, in fact, are insanely long by rock music standards: "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" comes in at 12:01, Celine Dion's version of "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" goes for 8:22, the Bonnie Tyler hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is 7:02, and "Tonight Is What it Means to Be Young" from the "Streets of Fire" Soundtrack lasts 6:58.
