Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is Capercaillie's lead singer, once described by Sean Connery as having "a throat that is surely touched by God"?

Answer: Karen Matheson

Born on 11th February 1963 in Taynuilt, Scotland, Karen Matheson made it to the list of HM the Queen Elizabeth II for the "2006 New Year's Honours". Karen was appointed OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for services to Scottish music.
2. In which decade was Capercaillie founded?

Answer: 1980s

Capercaillie was founded in 1984 in Oban, Scotland by Karen Matheson and Donald Shaw, while they were both still at Oban High School.
3. What was the name of Capercaillie's first album?

Answer: Cascade

"Cascade" was released in 1984, "Get Out" was released in 1992, "Secret People" in 1993 and "Crosswinds" in 1987.
4. Along with the original music of Carter Burwell, Capercaillie appeared on the soundtrack of this 1995 Hollywood film, which tells the story of a legendary hero of Scotland. Which film is it?

Answer: Rob Roy

With Liam Neeson in the title role and Jessica Lange as Mary McGregor (his wife), "Rob Roy" is the story of a simple, honourable man trying to lead his small town to a better future. The film's sountrack is a wonderful blend of a big orchestral score and rootsy Celtic instruments with Karen's voice featured on four of the tracks. Karen made a cameo appearance singing the song "Ailein Duinn".
5. In the summer of 1995, BBC Scotland made a special TV programme to honour the 250th Anniversary of the last Jacobite Rising. Capercaillie recorded an album for this programme. The songs retrace the steps of those who came down from the mountains to follow Prince Charles Edward Stewart. Which album is it?

Answer: Glenfinnan Glenfinnan (Songs of the '45)

The songs on this album bring a tribute to the Highland Scots (men, women and children), their courage and suffering during the Second Jacobite Rising which started in Glenfinnan in August 1745 and ended defeated in the brutal Battle of Culloden in April 1746.

The Highlanders' feudal clan system was dismantled, and even Highland dress was outlawed, but despite the attempted annihilation of a culture and a people, Gaelic endures.
6. On the album "Capercaillie", released in 1994, we find these lyrics: "Welcome Mother Nature/ Welcome to your home/ Welcome to the place you used to own." They come from which song on this album?

Answer: The Miracle of Being

"The Miracle of Being" is an extraordinary piece of music with great lyrics. This, of course, is my very personal opinion. The entire album ("Capercaillie") was recorded in colaboration with writer and world music producer Will Mowat and is a unique blend of African rhythms and Celtic music.
7. In what year was Capercaillie's album "Choice Language" released?

Answer: 2003

This album's title title reflects the modern interpretation of ancient songs that has become Capercaillie's trademark. For a band that has sold over a million albums, toured in over 30 countries and starred in a blockbuster movie, this album is still as fresh as ever.
8. Capercaillie have sung many of their songs in Gaelic. On their 1991 album "Delirium" we find "Coisich A Ruin". What's the English translation of this title?

Answer: Come On, My Love

"Coisich A Ruin" appeared on Capercaillie's 1992 EP "Prince Among Islands", which was the first Scottish Gaelic-language record to reach the UK Top 40 singles chart.
9. In 2002 the band recorded their first live album - "Capercaillie Live in Concert". At what live performance was it recorded?

Answer: Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow

The album was recorded at the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, in January 2002 as part of the Celtic Connections Festival. Over 70 minutes of pleasurable listening, capturing the true essence of this Scottish band doing what they do best - playing in front of a live audience with confidence and creative energy.
10. Where does Capercaillie comes from?

Answer: Scotland

The band is Scottish, coming from Oban, Scotland. A few members are from Ireland and England though.
