Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does the Walkers' doctor take Tommy to live?

Answer: In the same town as the Walkers

The lyrics come from the song "There's a Doctor I've Found" from the "Tommy" album:

"He lives in this town,
Let's see him tomorrow!"

"Tommy was released in May 1969.
2. What does the doctor say about Tommy's illness?

Answer: It is psychosomatic and he himself will have to overcome it

The doctor states that "all hope lies with him and not with me" and that "No machine can provide the stimulation/Needed to remove his inner block". What none of them know is that Tommy has been trying to reach out to them this whole time.
3. After the visit to the doctor, Tommy's parents continue their fervent attempts to cure Tommy. They've done everything they can possibly do when it comes to professionals, so they yell "Tommy, can you hear me?" multiple times in his ears while Tommy stares into his mirror. So, what's the bracket of the number of times the word "Tommy" is sung in the song "Tommy, Can You Hear Me"?

Answer: 25-29

As far as I can tell, it's exactly 26, but I may have missed one or two during the fadeout. Those Walkers just won't let up! The song and album were produced by Kit Lambert.
4. When someone smashes the mirror that Tommy saw the murder through and has been staring into for a lot of his time (when he wasn't playing pinball, going through cure attempts, or being abused by relatives), Tommy is finally cured! Who smashes it?

Answer: His mother

Mrs. Walker becomes very frustrated, saying that "you don't seem to see me but I think you can see yourself." In a rage, she smashes Tommy's mirror. It seems that a big load was lifted off of Tommy's mind, and Tommy was cured! But campers, it isn't over yet...
5. Once he's cured, what's the first thing Tommy realizes?

Answer: He's being worshipped and has fervent followers

The first song Tommy sings after he's cured is "Sensation".

"I overwhelm as I approach you,
Make your lungs hold breath inside,
Lovers break caresses for me,
Love enhanced when I've gone by."
6. How many stitches does it take to heal Sally Simpson?

Answer: 16

"Sixteen stitches put her right, and her dad said,
'Don't say I didn't warn ya!'"

Sally Simpson is a teenage follower who has a major crush on Tommy (remember, years have passed and he's a teenager himself now). She sneaks out of the house to attend one of his sermons. She runs onstage and manages to touch Tommy on the face, but his security guards quickly grab her and throw her offstage, leaving her with a big gash across her face!
7. For some reason, when Tommy was free, he didn't immediately realize he was free. How many songs go by before he sings "I'm Free"? (This is not counting the song in which he was cured or "I'm Free"--the songs BETWEEN them).

Answer: 3

In between "Smash the Mirror" and "I'm Free," there are three tracks. Those songs are "Sensation," "Miracle Cure," and "Sally Simpson."
8. Tommy invites his followers to live in his house, but before long, his house is full and there are still more waiting! What does he do?

Answer: builds an extension

"We need more room,
Build an extension,
A colorful palace,
Spare no expense now!"

The "colorful palace" is Tommy's Holiday Camp, run by the perfectly capable...Uncle Ernie. Was that really the best choice? These lyrics are from the song "Welcome".
9. Fame starts going to Tommy's head a bit, and he starts making heavy demands on his followers. Which of these did he NOT demand of them?

Answer: Become his household servants

"If you want to follow me, you've got to play pinball,
And put in your earplugs, put on your eyeshades, you know where to put the cork!

Hey you, getting drunk, so sorry I got you sussed,
Hey you, smoking Mother Nature, this is a bust!
Hey old hung-up Mr. Normal, don't try to gain my trust,
'Cause you ain't gonna follow me in any of those ways, although you think you must!"

These demands make Tommy's followers rather angry, and they revolt, leaving Tommy completely alone.
10. Tommy is once again isolated from the world, but socially rather than physically. Despite this, he decides to carry on. So, on a completely different note, how many songs did The Who's guitarist, main songwriter, and Tommy's main creator, Pete Townshend, write on this album?

Answer: 22

"Cousin Kevin" and "Fiddle About" were written by bassist and secondary songwriter John Entwhistle. "Eyesight to the Blind (The Hawker)" was an old blues song written by Sonny Boy Williamson. Drummer Keith Moon is CREDITED with writing "Tommy's Holiday Camp," but Townshend wrote it--Moon came up with the idea.

In my personal opinion, Tommy is the greatest thing ever to happen to rock and roll. Not only does it contain great music, it contains an intriguing and unique story that could live on forever. And hopefully it will. On a totally different note, I hope you enjoyed the quiz!
