Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Ode to Billie Joe", Billie Joe jumps off a bridge. Who seems to be the only one affected?

Answer: The Narrator

In Bobbie Gentrie's huge hit from 1967 everyone seems more interested in other things than the death of a young local. The narrator has been touched by the event and this is evident in her loss of appetite and she is admonished by her Mama, because "I've been cookin' all morning and you haven't touched a single bite". Father on the other hand comments that Billie Joe "never had a lick o' sense" and then promptly asked for the biscuits.

Her brother does put forward a recollection of how he and Billie Joe put a frog down the dress of the narrator but then his mind strays back to his meal as well and he develops a strong interest in a piece of pie.
2. Don't bother keeping up with the Joneses - just tell me, who sings the serious song, "Girlfriend in a Coma"?

Answer: The Smiths

Introduced on their 1987 album "Strangeways, Here We Come" the Smiths' song "Girlfriend in a Coma" (you'll find this remarkable) tells of a man whose girlfriend is in a coma. There's not much more to it than that. Famously, Morrissey, who co-wrote with Johnny Marr, said, "You're not really supposed to like those songs. They're very depressing and not supposed to be played on radio".
3. Street racing goes wrong in which Jan and Dean number from 1964?

Answer: Dead Man's Curve

Inside Brian Wilson's mother's house in 1964, sat the man himself, Artie Kornfeld, Roger Christian, and Jan Berry, and, together, they thrashed out this number, which would prove to be a huge hit for Jan and Dean. A young man in his Corvette Stingray is challenged by another man in a Jaguar to a drag.

It's all good fun until they reach the, almost, ninety degree bend on North Whittier Drive with fatal results. Now here's the freaky part; Jan Berry (the Jan of Jan and Dean) was driving his Stingray and crashed a couple of years later on North Whittier Drive... not that far away from the famous Dead Man's Curve.
4. Which of the following songs climaxes in a motorcycle crash?

Answer: Bat Out of Hell

Inspired by teenage tragedy songs, Jim Steinman wanted to create a cataclysmic effect by use of words and music to build tension and an element of teenage angst. It was released on the "Bat Out of Hell" album in 1977. Todd Rundgren, who produced the record, played the guitar lead solo that evoked the sound of motorcycle getting more and more out of control, that when the final curve came, it was too late to stop.
5. Normally associated with the Vietnam War, the song "Billy Don't Be a Hero" was sung by which UK band in 1974?

Answer: Paper Lace

Inevitably, Billy fails to keep his head down and is killed in action. He volunteers for a "forlorn hope" action, when he heads out to bring up reinforcements. Although the Vietnam War is not mentioned by name, it is generally assumed that that is the conflict. It was ranked number one in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, but was less successful in the USA.
6. In "Ebony Eyes" (Everly Brothers) a young man loses his fiancé, how?

Answer: Plane Crash

Inconsolable is the best way to describe the young man in the song and it's little wonder. The girl of his dreams is lost in a plane crash in stormy weather and now, every time there's a storm, it reminds him of her ebony eyes. (Good grief) (Pun intended).

The song was the flipside of the Everly's 1961 hit "Walk Right Back". "Ebony Eyes" was banned by the BBC because it was considered the lyrics were too upsetting but, despite this, the double A sided single topped the UK Singles' charts.
7. What song, written by Errol Brown and sung by Hot Chocolate, speaks of the death of his mother?

Answer: Emma

In this emotive and deep song, Brown identifies his mother as the aspiring actress who commits suicide, aged 38, when she could not achieve the success in acting that she desired. Released in 1974, it was the first big hit for Hot Chocolate.
8. Little White Dove lost her life in which Johnny Preston hit from 1955?

Answer: Running Bear

Indian chanting pervades this song as the two young lovers try to swim the "raging river" to be together and get swept away instead. "Running Bear" was a massive hit for Johnny Preston, spending three weeks in the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in the States. Ironically it took over top spot from "El Paso", by Marty Robbins, another song in which the main character passes away.

A tiny bit of trivia, the song was written by The Big Bopper (JP Richardson).
9. Who was the man named Stan, who drove himself off a bridge, in the 2000 song by Eminem?

Answer: Obsessed fan

In what is truly a tragic story, Eminem tells of a fan, who feels he is being ignored by his favourite artist, so he puts his expectant girlfriend in the boot of his car and drives off a bridge. It features the singer Dido Armstrong, who co-wrote the song. It received a number of nominations for awards in 2001, including best song in the MTV Europe Music Awards.
10. In 1999 which band recorded a cover of Wayne Cochran's teen tragedy "Last Kiss"?

Answer: Pearl Jam

Instant gratification. Using tragedy to support a tragedy. Pearl Jam first recorded the track for a charity album "No Boundaries: A Benefit for the Kosovar Refugees". They would later include it as a track on their 2003 rarities album "Lost Dogs". The song did well for Pearl Jam in both the United States and Canada.

In Australia, it topped the ARIA Charts. This was a much better result than Wayne Cochran was able to achieve back in 1961. Sadly, Wayne's effort was a major flop. During a period where there was a glut of teen tragedy songs this one produced a ghoulish twist. Teens take dad's car for a spin, they crash.

The young man regains consciousness and finds his girlfriend, still conscious. She asks him to hold her and they enjoy one final kiss before she slips away forever.
