Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of Enigma's first album?

Answer: MCMXC AD

Engima's first album was, amazingly enough, released in 1990 - and hence the title of the album ("MCMXC AD"). It became an instant international success with its combination of monastic-style music and modern dance sounds.
2. What was Enigma's debut single, which became a Number One smash around the globe, including the UK?

Answer: Sadeness (Part 1)

The spelling of the single seems to vary depending on where you see it. It is either spelt "Sadness" or "Sadeness". Anyway, the song went to Number One in several countries, including the UK in January 1991, having been released in December 1990. It stayed at the top for one week.
3. Complete the following lyric from the song "The Rivers of Belief" from Enigma's debut album: "And when the lamb opened the _______ seal, silence covered the sky."

Answer: Seventh

"The Rivers of Belief" was also a single release from their first album, as were the songs "Principles of Lust" and "Mea Culpa (part 2)".
4. Enigma's second album, "The Cross Of Changes", starts with which track?

Answer: Second Chapter

Engima's albums acknowledge the order in which they were written. On "The Cross Of Changes" you can see the number 2 by the band name, similarly on "Le Roi Est Mort..." there is the number 3 and so on.
5. Rising to number three in the UK charts, what was the first UK single from the second album?

Answer: Return To Innocence

An incredible five tracks were released as singles in Europe from the second album. Other singles include "Carly's Song" and "Age Of Loneliness", one of the other choices for this question.
6. "Age Of Loneliness", from "The Cross Of Changes" featured on the soundtrack of which film starring Sharon Stone?

Answer: Sliver

All films starred Sharon Stone, but "Sliver" was the correct one. On the back of the film, this song was also released in the UK.
7. Enigma's third album, "Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi" was released in which year?

Answer: 1996

The album title literally translates from French as: "The King is dead, long live the King" - a statement that while things change, in reality nothing actually changes. This view is confirmed with the opening lyrics to the album - "Things are changing, but nothing changes, and still there are changes. Le roi est mort, vive le roi!".
8. Complete the following lyric from the song "Beyond The Invisible", the first single from the third album: "It is time to break the chains of _______, if you follow you will see, what's beyond reality".

Answer: Life

A little-known fact is that the song "Beyond The Invisible" was used in an episode of "La Femme Nikita". The episode was called "Rescue". It was apparently also used in an episode of "Baywatch".
9. What was the name of the third track from this, the third album?

Answer: Third Of Its Kind

Other uses of tracks from the third album include the track "The Roundabout" in the trailer for the movie "One Night Stand" and the track "TNT For The Brain" in the US TV show "Millennium".
10. What was the name of Enigma's fourth album, released in 2000?

Answer: The Screen Behind The Mirror

"The Screen Behind The Mirror" was the correct answer, although all four are the titles of tracks on the album. The track "Gravity Of Love" was the first single from the album, and the video for it was filmed in Vienna, Austria.
11. Which piece of classical music featured at many stages throughout the album?

Answer: "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff

"Carmina Burana", in particular that section of it called "O Fortuna", appears most notably in the tracks "The Gate", "Gravity Of Love" and "Modern Crusaders".
12. Complete the following lyric from the song "Modern Crusaders": "We're not ________, we're not aggressive, but they think we can't defend".

Answer: Submissive

"Modern Crusaders" was also apparently used in an episode of "La Femme Nikita" called "Sleeping With The Enemy". Also of note, "Gravity Of Love" was used in the movie trailer to "The Scorpion King".
13. In what year was Enigma's fifth album, "Voyageur", released?

Answer: 2003

Three tracks from the album were released as singles in varying parts of the world - "Voyageur", "Following The Sun" and "Boum-Boum".
14. Complete the title of the following track from the album: "Total Eclipse Of The ________".

Answer: Moon

"Total Eclipse Of The Moon" is a very moving ballad about being away from somebody dear. It is also incredibly short, at just a little over two minutes long. The song sounds like there's a chamber orchestra playing it, but it is in fact all synthetically created.
15. Complete the following lyric from the song "Following The Sun" from the album: "Following the sun, to find the one, who's giving you the _____ _____ _____".

Answer: Wings to fly

In an interview in 2003, Michael Cretu said that the album "Voyageur" was "a new first one. The end of Enigma phase 1". Voyageur is indeed a very different album to the first four and does show a marked change in direction for Michael Cretu. In between albums four and five a "Greatest Hits" compilation of the first four was released which included a new song, called "Turn Around", which was released as a single to coincide with the "Greatest Hits" album launch.

The lyrics to that song could well have been a hint at the change in direction to come ("...no more age of loneliness....", for example, plus the names of several tracks from the first four albums are mentioned at various points in the song).
