Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From the album "Your Favorite Weapon", which song are the following lyrics from? "Have another drink and drive yourself home, I hope there's ice on all the roads, and you can think of me when you forget your seat belt and again when your head goes through the windshield"

Answer: Seventy Times Seven

While "The No Seat Belt Song" is on the album and is the most logical choice given the line, "Seventy Times Seven" was chosen. The irony lies in its origin. Bible verse Matthew 18:22 indicates this is the number of times one should forgive the perpetrator of a wrong against oneself.
2. Can you identify this song? "And even if her plane crashes tonight she'll find some way to disappoint me, by not burning in the wreckage, or drowning at the bottom of the sea. 'Jess, I still taste you, thus reserve my right to hate you.' And all this empty space that you create does nothing for my flawless sense of style."

Answer: Jude Law and a Semester Abroad

This was the only single from "Your Favorite Weapon". It managed to peak into the UK charts at 108. It didn't rank on the US charts, but it was enough to increase their fan base tremendously.
3. From "Your Favorite Weapon", which song do these lyrics belong to? "Watch you on the one's and two's. Through a window in a well lit room. Become a recluse. And I blame myself 'cause I make things hard and you're just trying to help."

Answer: Failure by Design

"Failure by Design" is the fifth track from "Your Favorite Weapon". It is also my personal favorite from the album. As the chorus says, "this is a lesson in procrastination." Something I'm very familiar with.
4. On "Deja Entendu", where can you find the following lyrics? "Some rules are made with all intentions to break And she defends it with a warped rationale. And I've seen what happens to the wicked and proud When they decide to try to take on the throne for the crown."

Answer: Jaws Theme Swimming

"Deja Entendu" was released in 2003. It was widely praised due to the evolution from "Your Favorite Weapon". The second two lines of the lyric given,
'And I've seen what happens to the wicked and proud When they decide to try to take on the throne for the crown.' are taken from the movie "Dogma".
5. Lyrical masterpiece, or teenage garbage? Name the song, and then decide. "Am I correct to defend the fist that holds this pen? It's ink that lies, the pen, the page, the paper. I live, I learn. You will always take what I have earned. And so aid my end while I believe I'm winning."

Answer: Good to Know That if I Ever Need Attention All I Have to Do is Die

This is the longest song title of any Brand New song. A bit depressing, but also (especially when you actually hear it) haunting and well-written.
6. Please fill in the missing lyric: "We saw the western coast I saw the hospital Nursed the shoreline like a wound Reports of lover's tryst Were neither clear nor descript We kept it safe and slow __________________________"

Answer: The Quiet Things that No One Ever Knows

'The Quiet Things that No One Ever Knows' is Brand New's most successful single to date. It reached number four on the Mainstream Rock Track Chart in 2003, just a year after they're first single failed to make the list at all. The music video begins with lead singer Jesse Lacey crashing his car, and follows emergency medical providers as they rush to save his girlfriend.
7. From their third album, 'The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me', which song references the Bible with the lines: "I have burned the bush that covered my light even though I'm scared I won't burn that bright."

Answer: You Won't Know

As the title of the album suggests, the band branches out from their previous work yet again; the theme of God is central. The final line of the song includes another reference, this one to John the Baptist, who ended up with his head on a platter.
8. Can you name the following which comes from one of only two songs written solely by guitarist Vincent Accardi on "The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me"? "It's hard to be the better man When you forget you're trying It's hard to be the better man When you're still lying"

Answer: Handcuffs

The other track written by Accardi on the album was "Welcome to Bangkok", although he also contributed on "Not the Sun", "Degausser", and "Sowing Season".
"Better Man" is a well-known song by Pearl Jam.
9. At last, we come to "Daisy". Do you recognize this song? "How darkly the dark hand met his end He was withered and bony, exposed for a phony But we heed the last words that he penned Haste to disgrace the traitor. Do not wait til later"

Answer: Sink

The above line is one of my all-time favorites. It continues:

"I don't think that you've got to pretend
I see God in birds and Satan in long words
But I know what you need in a friend
So now when I leave you, I hope I won't see you"

If there was a change in the music through the first three albums, the changes in "Daisy" are all the more dramatic. By this point, there are only traces of the melodic hooks so characteristic in the first two albums, and still clearly identifiable in the third. They are replaced by a much darker, edgier sound.
10. Which "Daisy" song began with the opening words of Jesse Lacey's grandma's favorite hymn? The first few lines read as follows: "Far away from any road Grows my heart in solitude Where no passer-by can see On life's highway, God with thee"

Answer: Vices

The hymn in question is "On Life's Highway" by Bertrand Brown. This is the first track on the album. Once the hymn portion is over, the other portion of the evolution in sound Brand New made becomes apparent. Jesse Lacey's vocals take on a near scream, as passion rather overtakes him.

The screaming is found at several other points throughout the album, but even when not screaming, his vocals are still significantly more primal, guttural.
