Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Brenda Ann Spencer killed a school principal and a custodian as well as injuring eight children and a police officer in 1979 and served as the inspiration for this song with a piano intro. What is the song?

Answer: I Don't Like Mondays

Spencer was 16 years old and lived across from the elementary school on which she opened fire, giving the Boomtown Rats their biggest hit and second UK number one. Bob Geldof of the Rats originally composed the number as a reggae song but that all changed when he added grand piano to the track in the studio.
2. In the "Family Guy" episode "Quagmire's Mum", which song by The Who with a keyboard intro did Peter sing to on the karaoke machine, after throwing up in the kitchen sink?

Answer: Baba O'Riley

The title of the song comes from two of songwriter Pete Townshend's big influences, his spiritual guru Meher Baba and American classical music composer Terry Riley. The track was released as a single in Europe, but not in UK or USA although it is recognisable to many as the opening theme to TV show "CSI: NY".
3. First recorded by Little Willie John in 1955, which blues song did Fleetwood Mac cover in 1968 and include on their "Pious Bird Of Good Omen" album in 1969?

Answer: Need Your Love So Bad

This track was released as a single and charted at number 31 in UK and an impressive number seven in Netherlands. The single that followed it was the instrumental UK number one "Albatross". The band line up at this time was quite different to the line up that would go on to record the multi million selling album "Rumours" as it comprised Mick Fleetwwod, John McVie, Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green.
4. Robert Plant wrote the lyrics to this Led Zeppelin classic while driving between Goulimine and Tantan in Morocco, but the title of the song is a disputed area over 4500 miles from Morocco. What is the song?

Answer: Kashmir

One of the few Zeppelin songs to use session musicians for the horns and strings section, this track has been mentioned several times by band members as the track they are most proud of, citing its musical intensity and lyrical positivity.
.
5. Once Frank Zappa had finished his concert at the Montreux Casino, the casino would be closed for the winter, allowing Deep Purple to record there, but what happened next was told in a famous song with an instantly recognisable intro. Which Deep Purple track is it?

Answer: Smoke On The Water

Ian Gillan was in the audience for the Zappa show, along with the rest of Deep Purple and clearly remembers the infamous flares being fired and the speed at which they set light to the building. Once evacuated, the band watched the fire from a nearby restaurant and bass player Roger Glover uttered the now famous line about there being smoke on the water, giving Gillan the catalyst to write the lyrics.
6. Which 1975 Bruce Springsteen song tells the story of Mary and her boyfriend and starts with an atmospheric piano and harmonica intro and takes its name from a 1958 Robert Mitchum movie?

Answer: Thunder Road

Not only one of my favourite intros, but also contains one of my favourite lines too. "You ain't a beauty but hey you're alright" is pure poetry to my ears and fits the whole context of the song so well. Regarding the Robert Mitchum movie, Springsteen has admitted he never saw the movie, but saw the title on a poster and decided to use it. For many years Springsteen would perform a not so optimistic follow up to "Thunder Road" in live performances called "The Promise", which was finally released in 1999.
7. Jack White wrote this opening riff in case he was ever asked to do a "James Bond" soundtrack. When he realised this was unlikely, he decided to use it for the White Stripes and paired it with a video shot as a kaleidoscopic diamond for the first release from the "Elephant" album. Which track?

Answer: Seven Nation Army

The track's title actually comes from the way Jack used to mispronounce Salvation Army when younger. In the 2017 general election run up, Labour Party supporters in UK used the tune to chant "Oh Jeremy Corbyn" and it swept the country to such an extent that even Baron Prescott of the House of Lords was retweeting it, but it wasn't enough to secure Corbyn the Prime Minister post.
Interesting cover versions include ones French singer Ben L'Oncole Soul and New York electro-swing band Postmodern Jukebox.
8. The album started with "Hells Bells", but the title track, which opened side two of the vinyl copy has surely one of the best intros ever? Which classic AC/DC track is this?

Answer: Back In Black

The "Back In Black" album was released in 1980, with new vocalist Brian Johnson, just five months after the death of Bon Scott and at the time was their biggest selling album. The lyrics are a tribute to Bon's life and meld perfectly with that guitar riff intro.
9. Only this song and "Communication Breakdown" were played at every Led Zeppelin concert from 1969 to 1980. The song starts with Jimmy Page playing a simple riff accompanied by a restrained John Bonham on drums and opened side two of the vinyl version of "Led Zeppelin II". What is the track?

Answer: Heartbreaker

On the album, "Heartbreaker" segues into "Livin' Lovin' Maid (She's Just A Woman)", but despite playing "Heartbreaker" so often, the band never played this track live, although they would often stretch "Heartbreaker", with Page playing excerpts from Simon and Garfunkel's "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)", and "Greensleeves" during the solo.
10. My favourite intro of all time is from Blue Oyster Cult's debut album in 1972. It is the only track on the album that featured drummer Albert Bouchard on lead vocals but what is it called?

Answer: Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll

The riff for "Cities On Flame" was allegedly inspired by Black Sabbath track "The Wizard" from 1970 but in my opinion, the BOC track is far above Sabbath's. Although "Cities On Flame" was released as a single (the band's first), it didn't trouble the charts anywhere in the world but the track is still played live at most concerts and in early 2018, the band estimated they have played it almost 2000 times.
