Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy. 'I know him and he does'. And you're my fact-checkin' cuz." For many the embodiment of indie. What band and which song is this?

Answer: "Stereo" - Pavement

In the beginning Pavement were all in their 20s, except for Gary Young, their drummer, who was an old hippie. During gigs he'd often start to juggle his drum sticks instead of keeping the beat or start drumming on the stage instead of his drums. Anyway, he was kind of a wild figure. So when Pavement started to get more serious, the first thing they did was kick out Young.

He released three solo albums, the first of which was "Hospital" (1995). In the video clip for its minor hit "Plant Man" Sonic Youth singer Thurston Moore walked around dressed up as a tree.
2. "My girl Sasha. Lookin' good on the street. "Mannequin" was filmed at Woolworth's. Boyz II Men still keepin' up the beat, yeah." Lyrics from a funky almost hit by whom?

Answer: "Freedom of '76" - Ween

Dean and Gene Ween are in fact not brothers. They're actually called Mickey Melchiondo and Aaron Freeman. Sorry to rob you of your illusions.
3. "Daddy, what does regret mean?" "Well son, the funny thing about regret is, it's better to regret something you have done, than to regret something you haven't done. And by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, be sure and tell her, SATAN, SATAN, SATAN!!!" A classic intro by whom?

Answer: "Sweat Loaf" - Butthole Surfers

The song "Sweat Loaf" is actually a far-out cover of the Black Sabbath song "Sweet Leaf".
4. "Seen enough to eye you. But I've seen too much to try you. It's always weirdness while you. Dig it much too much to fry you. The weirdness flows between us. Anyone can tell to see us." What classic single is this?

Answer: "Freak Scene" - Dinosaur Jr.

When original Dinosaur Jr members J Mascis and Lou Barlow (Sebadoh, Folk Implosion, ...) parted company, it was one of the most traumatising splits ever to occur in a rock band. Anyway, it seemed like that because Barlow couldn't shut up about it. On and on he went. And then, in 2005, they got back together again, doing a reunion tour with the original 'JayLouMurph'line-up. Go figure.
5. "Every day, I wake up and pray to Jah. And he increases the number of clocks by exactly one. Everybody's comin' home for lunch these days. Last night there were skinheads on my lawn." Quirkiness alert. Who is this?

Answer: "Take the Skinheads Bowling" - Camper Van Beethoven

In 1986 the band Camper Van Beethoven (geddit?) were poised and ready to record a new album, but on the first day of recording their drummer broke his arm. So while waiting around they decided to cover one of the few albums they found lying around in the studio in its entirety: Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk". Halfway through they got - understandably - bored with the project and didn't really finish it.

The recordings they made were shelved until 2002.
6. "I feel it coming on again. Just like it did before. They feed your pride with boredom. And they lead you on to war. The way you treat each other. Really makes me feel ill. Cause if you want to fight. Then you're just dying to get killed." Not all indie rock is fey and twee. Who expressed these negative vibrations and in what song?

Answer: "I Wanna Destroy You" - The Soft Boys

The Soft Boys started out during the UK punk craze of 1977, but they didn't really like punk all that much. Which was probably a good thing, 'cause punks didn't like the Soft Boys either. Singer Robyn Hitchcock later said he only ever saw one punk gig, and that was The Damned, when they were support act themselves. But that's probably apocryphal.
7. "Beside yourself if radio's gonna stay. Reason: It could polish up the grey. Put that, put that, put that up your wall. That this isn't country at all. Raving station, beside yourself. Keep me out of country in the word. Deal the porch is leading us absurd. Push that, push that, push that to the hull. That this isn't nothing at all." What are they on about?

Answer: "Radio Free Europe" - R.E.M.

"Radio Free Europe" was their debut single. R.E.M. stands for Rapid Eye Movement.
8. "All men have secrets and here is mine so let it be known. We have been through hell and high tide. I can surely rely on you. And yet you start to recoil. Heavy words are so lightly thrown. But I'd still leap in front of a flying bullet for you." Quite dramatic. Who and what is it?

Answer: "What Difference Does It Make?" - The Smiths

In order to seem more interesting, Smiths' singer Morrissey wore a hearing aid during their first appearance on British television programme "Top Of The Pops". And some daffodils in his back pocket.
9. "Here you go way too fast. Don't slow down you're gonna crash. You should watch - watch your stay here. Don't look out you're gonna break your neck. So shut, shut your mouth. Cause I'm not listening anyhow. I've had enough, enough of you. Enough to last a life time through. So what do you want of me? Got no words of sympathy. And if I go around with you. You know that I'll get messed up too with you." Lovely song. What is it?

Answer: "Crash" - the Primitives

The Primitives were named after one of Lou Reed pre-Velvet Underground bands, which was also called the Primitives. Lou's Primitives released one 7": "The Ostrich"/"Sneaky Pete" in 1964.
10. "Started back in '83. Started seeing things a differently. And hardcore wasn't doin' it for me no more. Started smoking pot. Thought things sounded better slow. Much slower, heavier. Black magic melody to sink this poseur's soul. Renew Stooges undeniably cool. Took a lesson from that drone rock school. Manipulate musicians halfway to school. Getting loose with the Pussy Galore. Cracking jokes like a Thurston Moore. Peddle hopping like a Dinosaur and J. Rock and Roll genius, ride the middle of the road. Milk that sound, blow your load. Shoot it further than you ever said it go. Four stars in the Rolling Stone." What semi-legendary lyric is this?

Answer: "Gimme Indie Rock" - Sebadoh

When playing the AB venue in Brussels, Belgium, in 1999, singer Lou Barlow didn't seem too happy for some reason. At a certain point he jumped off the stage and completely disappeared. The rest of the band didn't know what to do and so just trundled off the stage.

After a while Barlow resurfaced again and started doing some wild medley of his most heartbreaking songs; while sitting on his knees and obviously being in some kind of emotional turmoil. The next day the newspapers ran titles like 'Barlow goes Bonkers in Brussels'.
