Girls Aloud were formed after competing on the reality TV show "Popstars: The Rivals". This show was screened November 2002 on ITV. The "Rivals" were a competing all boy band, named One True Voice. The television viewers voted for their favourite singer, females one week and males the following week.

The idea was to put two bands together and let them battle for the number one UK hit at Christmas 2002.
