Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What guitarist started out playing banjo in bluegrass acts before finding fame with the Grateful Dead?

Answer: Jerry Garcia

Jerry was an excellent banjo player, and recorded a great album as part of the band Old And In The Way -- which also included mandolinist David Grisman. He continued recording bluegrass and traditional music with Grisman until just before he died.
2. What guitar player was credited on Frank Zappa albums as a "stunt guitarist," before going on to play with David Lee Roth and Whitesnake?

Answer: Steve Vai

Talk about having great teachers! Vai studied under Joe Satriani as a teenager and went on to work for Zappa in his early 20s. I've always felt that Vai's playing is a little too cold and technical, but there is no doubt he is incredibly gifted. His solo album, "Passion & Warfare," is worth a listen.
3. Which of these famous guitarists did not play with the British band, The Yardbirds?

Answer: George Harrison

Beck went on to much acclaim as a solo artist, Page found fame with Led Zeppelin, and Clapton had hits with Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and The Dominos, and as a solo artist.
4. This guitar idol briefly left the band that bore his name to start a new group called Band Of Gypsies. Who is this rock legend?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

Hendrix is so famous that almost any clue is a dead giveaway. The Band Of Gypsies couldn't keep up with Hendrix, so he eventually re-formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Unfortunately, he didn't live long enough to record more than three studio albums.
5. Change of pace: What bluegrass and country picker was such a prodigy that he was playing with Ralph Stanley at the age of 15? Hint: he has his own radio show called "Simple Life Radio."

Answer: Ricky Skaggs

Skaggs is one the most talented guitarists I have ever seen (or heard). In addition to his work with Stanley, Skaggs played with Emmylou Harris and the Clinch Mountain Boys, among others.
6. I don't think I'm going out on a limb when I say that this guitarist is, by far, the most famous albino bluesman from Texas. Who is he? Hint: his brother Edgar had a hit with the song "Frankenstein."

Answer: Johnny Winter

While Winter's solo material is pretty good, I really enjoy his playing on Muddy Waters' 1977 album "Hard Again."
7. Back to rock n' roll: What guitarist played with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers before becoming a national authority on missile defense?

Answer: Skunk Baxter

No kidding, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter is now recognized as an adviser to the United States on missile defense issues. However, I will always remember him best for his work with Steely Dan. I love the guitar playing on "Can't Buy A Thrill."
8. Who was the original guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Answer: Hillel Slovak

Slovak co-wrote some great RHCP tracks, including "Fight Like A Brave" and "Behind The Sun," before his untimely death. RHCP has gone on to record albums with Jon Frusciante and David Navarro filling the guitar duties. I think Frusciante's creative approach to the guitar is more in line with Slovak's style.
9. What guitarist is the driving force behind Dinosaur Jr?

Answer: J Mascis

Mascis' aggressive style, coupled with his love for feedback, has made his recordings with Dinosaur Jr into classics of the "alternative" rock genre. I prefer to avoid the label and appreciate the massive amount of energy he puts into the music. My favorite song? Probably "Little Fury Things" on the album "You're Living All Over Me."
10. What guitarist is the mastermind behind Helmet's relentlessly percussive, and perfectly synchronized, sound?

Answer: Page Hamilton

Hamilton's playing, and Helmet's sound, is remarkable for its brutal pacing and the band's ability to start and stop on a dime. The album "Betty" is a classic of 1990s metal.
