Question 1 of 10
1. "Hello out there! We're on the air,
It's Hockey Night tonight;
Tension grows, the whistle blows,
And the puck goes down the ice.
The goalie jumps, and the players bump,
And the fans all go insane;
Someone roars, "_______ scores!"
At the good old hockey game."

Who scores?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. This song is from a singer who does not immediately spring to mind when you think of manly pursuits. It reminds us, though, that hockey doesn't only belong to the NHL and the jocks. Who is the artist, here?

"You skate as fast as you can 'til you hit the snowbank (that's how you stop)
and you get your sweater from the catalogue
you use your rubber boots for goal posts
ah...walkin' home
don't let those Sunday afternoons
get away get away get away get away
break away break away break away break away"
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. "Gordie and my old man on a Saturday night
watching the ___________ and getting tight"

In this song by the Grievous Angels, which original six team are they watching?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Here's a fun one that you can hear at games sometimes; can you remember the name of the band who gave us this song?

"Do you play hockey?"
And I says "Do I play hockey?
Well, I play Air hockey, Ball hockey, Barn hockey, Bubble hockey, Field hockey,
Floor hockey, Ice hockey, Kitchen hockey, Road hockey, Roller hockey, Table hockey, Twist hockey
And I play hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey all the time!"
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. "He prayed to God he could keep his mind on the game
One went off the pad
One went off the skates
One went in the top shelf he couldn't concentrate
he didn't give a damn about the goal light flashin' red
Love hit him
Love hit him
Love hit him like _____________"

What words finish this lyric?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. "You might think you Yankees
Are better than us Canucks
But we don't need no microchips
Inside our hockey pucks"

OK, this is not really a hockey song - that's the only hockey reference in it, right there, but I like it a lot so I wanted to include it. However, it was written by a three-man comedy group, who do have a more famous hockey song, "Me Like Hockey". What's the name of the group?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. "I hear your voice 'cross a frozen lake
a voice from the end of a leaf
saying, 'you won't die of a thousand fakes
or be beaten by the sweetest of dekes'"

What's the name of this song, from the Tragically Hip?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. "Wendel was a man with a stick in his hands
Who learned how to play in Kelvington, S-A-S-K.
You'll wish that you had died,
When Wendel has your hide,
'Cause he does it the Canadian way.

So now we sit around on the couch and watch TV
And we see Wendel leading the team.
Well, if God made Clark on the seventh day,
He knew what He was doing if He did.
(If He did!)"

Which long established and influential Toronto band gave us this song?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. "There were Swedes to the left of him
Russians to the right
A Czech at the blue line looking for a fight
Brains over brawn--that might work for you
But what's a Canadian farm boy to do?"

We need at least one song on this quiz that isn't by a Canadian! Who gave us this one?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Another American band, Gear Daddies, have a song about a non-game rink staple. What's their biggest hit about?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Hello out there! We're on the air, It's Hockey Night tonight; Tension grows, the whistle blows, And the puck goes down the ice. The goalie jumps, and the players bump, And the fans all go insane; Someone roars, "_______ scores!" At the good old hockey game." Who scores?

Answer: Bobby

"Oh! The good old hockey game,
Is the best game you can name;
And the best game you can name,
Is the good old hockey game!"

Ah, Stompin' Tom - the master of the metronome beat and the obvious rhyme. He may not be subtle, but he's ours. Actually, I'm a big fan of his - he can capture the reality of Canadian life better than many, more 'artistic' songwriters.

This song is called, simply, "The Hockey Song". The choice of "Bobby" as the name there is a good one, as there have been a lot of high scoring Bobbies, over the years.
2. This song is from a singer who does not immediately spring to mind when you think of manly pursuits. It reminds us, though, that hockey doesn't only belong to the NHL and the jocks. Who is the artist, here? "You skate as fast as you can 'til you hit the snowbank (that's how you stop) and you get your sweater from the catalogue you use your rubber boots for goal posts ah...walkin' home don't let those Sunday afternoons get away get away get away get away break away break away break away break away"

Answer: Jane Siberry

"Hockey". This is probably my favourite hockey song - it's just got that late afternoon winter light in it, somehow.

Jane Siberry (now known as Issa) is the quintessential non-commercial woman musician - very personal songs that really don't worry too much about fitting into the "Star-making machinery behind the popular song" as Joni Mitchell put it. In 2006 she gave away most of her possessions, and changed her name.
3. "Gordie and my old man on a Saturday night watching the ___________ and getting tight" In this song by the Grievous Angels, which original six team are they watching?

Answer: Black Hawks

"Gordie and My Old Man". The Grievous Angels are an alt-country band from Ontario, mostly focused on and in Northern Ontario, though they originally formed in Toronto. They've been nominated for several Junos over the years, and are worth checking out if you like that kind of music.

I gave you a clue with the answer options - the Chicago Black Hawks were the only original six team named.
4. Here's a fun one that you can hear at games sometimes; can you remember the name of the band who gave us this song? "Do you play hockey?" And I says "Do I play hockey? Well, I play Air hockey, Ball hockey, Barn hockey, Bubble hockey, Field hockey, Floor hockey, Ice hockey, Kitchen hockey, Road hockey, Roller hockey, Table hockey, Twist hockey And I play hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey all the time!"

Answer: Jughead

"Hockey Song". Not to be confused with the LA band named Jughead made up of Ty Tabor, Derek Sherinian, Matt Bissonette, and Gregg Bissonette, this Jughead bills itself as "The Original Motorgrass Band ... what it would be like if Motorhead hosted 'Hee-Haw'".
5. "He prayed to God he could keep his mind on the game One went off the pad One went off the skates One went in the top shelf he couldn't concentrate he didn't give a damn about the goal light flashin' red Love hit him Love hit him Love hit him like _____________" What words finish this lyric?

Answer: a frozen puck to the head

"Frozen Puck to the Head" is a great song by the Edmonton band Captain Tractor. Never a band to really get lots of play on the airwaves, they are pretty popular in folk-rock circles. One of their biggest successes has been their cover of the Arrogant Worms song, "The Last Saskatchewan River Pirate" - a highly recommended song.
6. "You might think you Yankees Are better than us Canucks But we don't need no microchips Inside our hockey pucks" OK, this is not really a hockey song - that's the only hockey reference in it, right there, but I like it a lot so I wanted to include it. However, it was written by a three-man comedy group, who do have a more famous hockey song, "Me Like Hockey". What's the name of the group?

Answer: The Arrogant Worms

"Proud to be Canadian". If you ever get a chance to see these guys live, take it. Very funny indeed.

By the way, although they are often credited on the internet with the song "Gretzky Rocks", it's not one of theirs. It's from The Pursuit of Happiness.
7. "I hear your voice 'cross a frozen lake a voice from the end of a leaf saying, 'you won't die of a thousand fakes or be beaten by the sweetest of dekes'" What's the name of this song, from the Tragically Hip?

Answer: The Lonely End of the Rink

Yet another Canadian band made up of Canadian boys who love hockey. A goaltending song, at least on one level.

"Fifty Mission Cap" is another good one of theirs:

"Bill Barilko disappeared that summer,
he was on a fishing trip.
The last goal he ever scored
won the Leafs the cup
They didn't win another until 1962,
the year he was discovered."
8. "Wendel was a man with a stick in his hands Who learned how to play in Kelvington, S-A-S-K. You'll wish that you had died, When Wendel has your hide, 'Cause he does it the Canadian way. So now we sit around on the couch and watch TV And we see Wendel leading the team. Well, if God made Clark on the seventh day, He knew what He was doing if He did. (If He did!)" Which long established and influential Toronto band gave us this song?

Answer: The Rheostatics

"The Ballad of Wendel Clark, Part Two". Dave Bidini, the guitarist for the band, has done a lot of sports writing, one way or another. He's written a book, "Tropic of Hockey", and the documentary based on it, "Hockey Nomad".
9. "There were Swedes to the left of him Russians to the right A Czech at the blue line looking for a fight Brains over brawn--that might work for you But what's a Canadian farm boy to do?" We need at least one song on this quiz that isn't by a Canadian! Who gave us this one?

Answer: Warren Zevon

"Hit somebody! was what the crowd roared
When Buddy the goon came over the boards
"Coach," he'd say, "I wanna score goals"
The coach said, "Buddy, remember your role,
The fast guys get paid, they shoot, and they score
Protect them, Buddy, that's what you're here for."

"Hit Somebody" is from his "My Ride's Here" album, of 2002.
10. Another American band, Gear Daddies, have a song about a non-game rink staple. What's their biggest hit about?

Answer: Zamboni

"Now e'er since I was young
It's been my dream
That I might drive the Zamboni machine
I guess that I was just slick as could be
And all the kids would look up to me"

"I Wanna Drive the Zamboni" was used on the soundtracks to the "Mighty Ducks" movies.

I want to thank FT member Cheryli - her quiz on hockey songs gave me the kick I needed to finish this one, which I'd been idly working on for years.
