Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Jesus Loves Me" has been a well-loved song since 1862, and a poem before that. Please choose the words that follow the title. Which ones are they?

Answer: This I know

"Jesus Loves Me" was a poem written by Anna B. Warner in 1860. In that same year, a novel by Susan Warner (her daughter?), "Say and Seal" used the poem as comfort to a dying child. Two years later it was set to music. It is still a lovely song and has been sung by many top artists like Whitney Houston and Dionne Warwick.

The original poem starts:

"Jesus loves me-this I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to him belong,-
They are weak, but he is strong."

The verse was added when it became a song:

"Yes Jesus Loves Me
Yes Jesus Loves Me
Yes Jesus Loves Me
The Bible Tells Me So"
2. Famous movie and TV star, Dale Evans (married to Roy Rogers), was an author and songwriter, too. She wrote an original hymn, sometimes confused with "Jesus Loves Me". What is the name of her song?

Answer: The Bible Tells Me So

Dale Evans is said to have written over 200 songs. Another one, that became Roy and Dale's theme song, was "Happy Trails to You". She also wrote many books, such as "Angel Unaware" about her little child that died.

"The Bible Tells Me So", was recorded by Nick Noble, Don Cornell and others. Here are the beginning lyrics:

"Have faith, hope and charity,
That's the way to live successfully.
How do I know, the Bible tells me so.
Do good to your enemies,
And the Blessed Lord you'll surely please,
How do I know, the Bible tells me so."
3. This Sunday school standard is known as "Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam", or sometimes, "I'll Be a Sunbeam". In the song, what does the singer say that he will do each day?

Answer: Shine

The song was from 1900 and written by Nellie Talbot. It was inspired by a verse in the Old Testament, Judges 5:31:
"So may all your enemies perish
O Lord!
But may they who love you be like
the sun
When it rises in its strength
Then the land had peace forty years".
From "The Song of Deborah", (NIV Study Bible).

And the song starts this way:
"Jesus wants me for a sunbeam,
To shine for Him each day;
In every way try to please Him,
At home, at school, at play."
4. "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder", was a lot of fun to sing in Sunday School. Evidently, a certain "Man in Black" thought so too. What star included it on his album, "Ultimate Gospel"?

Answer: Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash and other stars, such as Alan Jackson, have recorded this song.

It was written by James M. Black, a Sunday School teacher, in 1893. When a little girl didn't come to Sunday School one day, he remembered the verse, Rev.20:12, and hoped she wouldn't be absent on judgement day. As he walked home the complete song came to him, and he wrote it down. He was afraid not to.

This song was sung in the movie, "Sergeant York" (1941).

First verse and refrain:
"When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair;
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,
And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there."

Refrain ends:
"When the roll is called up yonder I'll be there."
5. "Down in My Heart" was a song with actions, that a child might sing at a vacation Bible school, or other get-together. If you remember, or can guess, what might a child have/be 'down in his/her heart'?

Answer: Joy

The song was written by George W. Cooper, a minister that lived in 1848-1923. He also wrote over 20 books.
The song has been recorded by band, "Ka*Pop" with arrangement by Tyra Neftziger.

There are other possible lyrics. The usual lyric and chorus is:
"I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy
Down in my heart
Down in my heart
Down in my heart
I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy
Down in my heart
Down in my heart to stay"
6. This song was a traditional American spiritual, first recorded by a folk song collecter in 1927. Frank Warner recorded it in 1952. When many others, such as Mahalia Jackson recorded it, it became a world-wide hit. Using the hint in the above statement, can you tell me the rest of the name of this song? "He's Got _____"

Answer: The Whole World In His Hands

Early recordings of this song from North Carolina led to the preservation and revival of this traditional song. From the 1950s on, it won many honorable positions in lists of hits. For instance, Mahalia Jackson's recording was on the U.S. Billboard Top 100 singles chart, and the first gospel song for that honor, the song was number one on that chart in 1958.

The number of other artist's recordings, and its use in motion pictures was too numerous to list.

It has many verses, here is the first - clap your hands and sing:
"He's got the whole world in his hands.
He's got the whole world in his hands.
He's got the whole world in his hands.
He's got the whole world in his hands."
7. This is a song about light. The light in the song could refer to love, talents and personality of yours, spiritual power, freedom or changes you could make. During the 1960s sometimes the words were changed, and it became a Civil Rights anthem. Which song is it?

Answer: This Little Light of Mine

The song, sometimes called a spiritual, was written by Harry Dixon Loes about 1920. It may have been inspired by three different Bible verses: Matthew 5:16, about "...light shine before men", or Luke 11:33, about not hiding your light, but putting it where all may see it, or maybe Matthew 5:14 when Jesus said, "Ye are the light of the world".

Bruce Springsteen included "This Little Light of Mine" on his 2006 album, "Live in Dublin", and the song has been used in numerous TV shows.

Sing Along:

"This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine."
8. There have been two popular songs with this title since the 1950s. One is Gospel, one not. The Gospel song has been recorded by many artists including Elvis. The first line gives the title___________, then continues with the words. "When Jesus washes, Oh when he washes, washes my sins away,__________".

Answer: Oh Happy Day

This song, a huge hit world-wide, was recorded in modern times, first by Ethan Hawkins. Soon other artists followed, hundreds of them. It's an 18th century hymn, using an even older melody. Phillip Dodderidge based the words on Acts:35, wherein the sins of a man are washed away by baptism.

Among the other artists recording "Oh Happy Day", are Glen Campbell and Aretha Franklin. It has won a Grammy and many other honors over the world; Europe, Australia and elsewhere.

You can see a great version on You Tube by Choeur Gospel Celebration de Quebec.

First verse:
"Oh, happy day
(oh, happy day)
Oh, happy day
(oh, happy day)
When Jesus washed
(when Jesus washed)
oh, when he washed
(when Jesus washed)
when Jesus washed
(when Jesus washed)
he washed my sins away!
(oh, happy day)"
9. Spiritual songs of black slaves in the U.S. were collected under President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930s. The songs were presented in a stage production by Wilson Bell in 2013. The production bears the name of one of the spirituals, "Do Lord Remember Me". Is that statement true or false?

Answer: True

Wilson Bell produced "Do Lord Remember Me" in Los Angeles in 2013. It was written by James de Jongh and he based it on the stories by ex-slaves which they told in the 1930s, as part of President Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration, 1936-38. de Jongh wrote the play using the memories recorded by ex-slaves and told the history of slavery in the U.S., beginning with a slave auction and ending with the end of the Civil War.

You can listen to Johnny Cash singing this Sunday school favorite:
"Do Lord" Lyrics
From My Mother's Hymn Book
"I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun
I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun
I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun
Way beyond the blue

Do Lord, O, do Lord, O do remember me
Do Lord, O, do Lord, O do remember me
Do Lord, O, do Lord, O do remember me
Way beyond the blue"
10. Not so old is "I Saw the Light" written in 1948 by one of the greatest Country music stars. He wrote and sang many hits, some crossing over to Pop. Quite a few of his songs made number one on the U.S. Billboard of C&W Best Sellers. The hits seemed unstoppable until sometime after midnight Jan 1, 1953, he died in the back of a car on his way to a concert. Who wrote "I Saw the Light"?

Answer: Hank Williams

"I Saw the Light" was usually used to close Hank's shows. In the song, Williams recognized his religious beliefs and hope for redemption, even though he was an alcoholic. Bible references he used are Matthew 7:13-14, 1 Thessalonians 5:5:2-4 and Revelations 22-5, "...there will be no more night". Also used was John 9:11, "...I am the light of the World".

Numerous artists have recorded the song including Etta James and Willy Nelson. Remember the Million Dollar Quartet? Three of them (minus Elvis): Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, recorded a live version on their album, "The Survivors Live" (1982).

At number one on CMT's "20 Greatest Songs of Faith, 2005, was the Hank Williams version of "I Saw The Light".

"I wandered so aimless life filled with sin
I wouldn't let my dear saviour in
Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
Chorus
I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light."
