Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This one always stumps me. What's the missing word in these lyrics from the 1964 Terry Stafford hit "Suspicion"? "Suspicion torments my heart Suspicion keeps us apart Suspicion why ____ me"

Answer: Torture

"Suspicion" ranked sixth on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of April 4th, 1964, trailing only The Beatles, whose songs occupied the top five spots. The following week the song reached its peak position at number three, breaking up the Fab Four's monopoly.

The song was originally recorded by Elvis Presley as a album cut for his 1962 LP "Pot Luck", but was not released as a single. However, following the success of Stafford's version, it was released in the US, but it failed miserably, peaking at number 103. "Suspicion" was Stafford's only top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, but in the mid 1970s he did enjoy some moderate success on the Billboard Country charts.
2. I'm constantly getting my days mixed-up. Any chance you know which one is missing from this Beatles' classic? "Friday night arrives without a suitcase ____ morning creeping like a nun Monday's child has learned to tie his bootlace See how they run"

Answer: Sunday

"Lady Madonna" spent two weeks atop the UK Singles Chart in March of 1968, but stalled at number four in the U.S., making it the band's first single since "Eleanor Rigby" in 1966 not to top the Billboard Hot 100. Paul McCartney's very familiar piano riff that opens the song was based on the jazz song "Bad Penny Blues", which was a top 20 hit in Britain in 1956. Since the latter part of 1963 the group's singles had been released by Parlophone Records in the UK and Capitol Records in the US, but that partnership ended with "Lady Madonna". Beginning with "Hey Jude", all their future singles would now be released by The Beatles own label, the newly formed Apple Records. All the days of the week are mentioned in the song, with the exception of Saturday.
3. I can't quite put my finger on this one. I know there are three words missing from this 1968 hit by the Turtles, but I don't remember them. Do you? "Elenore, gee, I think you're swell And you really do me well You're my ____ ____ ____, etcetera"

Answer: Pride and Joy

All The Turtles hits up to this point were composed by other songwriters, "Elenore" was the first successful single to be written by members of the band. According to lead singer Howard Kaylan, the song was never supposed to be taken seriously, it was actually a parody of their 1967 hit "Happy Together".

In the liner notes of The Turtles' Anthology "Solid Zinc" Kayman said: "It was never intended to be a straight-forward song. It was an anti-love letter to White Whale (their record company) who were constantly on our backs to bring them another 'Happy Together'. So I gave them a very skewed version.

Not only with chords changed, but with all these bizarre words. It was my feeling that they would listen to how strange and stupid the song was and leave us alone.

But they didn't get the joke. They thought it sounded good." As it turns out it was no joke. "Elenore" became one of The Turtles most successful singles, peaking at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in November of 1968.
4. This song was a big hit for The Mindbenders in 1966, but I can't for the life of me recall the missing word. A little help please? "Wouldn't you agree, baby you and me got a ____ kind of love"

Answer: Groovy

Originally known as Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, the band had a break-out hit in 1965 with "Game of Love", which hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles Chart. After a couple of less successful follow-up singles, Fontana decided to leave the group to embark on a solo career. "A Groovy Kind of Love" was the first single The Mindbenders released following Fontana's departure, and it went on to become their biggest hit, reaching number two on both the US and UK pop charts.

A slowed down version by Phil Collins in 1988 was even more successful, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100, while also topping the charts in several other countries.
5. I'm not sure what word is missing from this 1966 hit by Donovan, but I pretty sure it's edible. What could it be? "Electrical ____ Is gonna be a sudden craze Electrical____ Is bound to be the very next phase"

Answer: Banana

"Mellow Yellow" was an international hit for Donovan, charting in numerous countries, including the US, where it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1966. After its release there were rumors that the song was about smoking dried banana peels, which some people believed would get you high, but this was not the case.

In an interview with the British music magazine New Musical Express in 2011 Donovan admitted that when he used the phrase "electrical banana" he was referring to a device that was becoming popular with woman at the time. Enough said.
6. I know there is an automobile mentioned in the lyrics from this 1963 Beach Boy's hit, my problem is I'm not sure which one. Any of you know what this guy is driving? "We could ride the surf together While our love would grow In my ____ I would take you Everywhere I go"

Answer: Woody

"Surfer Girl" was the first song that Brian Wilson wrote totally on his own, composing it in 1961 at the age of 19. The melody was based on a 1960 version of "When You Wish Upon a Star" by Dion and the Belmonts, which featured a similar chord structure.

Although the song was written in 1961, the single wasn't recorded until June of 1963. It was released the following month, and went on to become the band's second top ten hit, peaking at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in September of that year.
7. When it comes to dancing I have two left feet, so that's probably why I'm having a problem remembering this particular lyric. What word is missing from this 1967 smash hit by Procol Harum? "We skipped the light ____ Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick But the crowd called out for more"

Answer: Fandango

Formed in April of 1967, Procol Harum didn't take long to burst onto the music scene. "A Whiter Shade of Pale" was released that May and went on to become the band's biggest hit, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, while also spending six weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart.

The single has sold more than ten million copies worldwide, making it one of the best selling songs of all-time. Although Procol Harum continued to record up until their break-up in 1977, they were unable to match the success of their signature song.
8. I love this sweet tune by the Four Tops, but I'm having a rough time remembering the opening line. What's missing here? "____ ____, honey bunch You know that I love you I can't help myself I love you and nobody else"

Answer: Sugar Pie

"I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" was the Four Tops' first number one, spending two weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in the Summer of 1965. The odd thing about the song's stay at number one is that it happened in non-consecutive weeks, first reaching the top on June 19th, falling to number two the following week and then back to the top on July 3rd.

It also spent an amazing nine consecutive weeks on the Billboard R&B chart.
9. Geography wasn't one of my strongest subjects in school, so it's not surprising that I'm having a little trouble with one. What US city is missing in this 1969 hit by Elvis Presley? "As the snow flies On a cold and gray ____ mornin' A poor little baby child is born In the ghetto"

Answer: Chicago

"In the Ghetto" was written by Mac Davis and was initially going to be called "The Vicious Circle", but the title was changed prior to Elvis recording it. The song was recorded during a session at American Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, the same session where Presley recorded his final US number one, "Suspicious Minds". "In the Ghetto" peaked at three on the Billboard Hot 100 in June of 1969, it was his first US top ten hit since "Crying in the Chapel" reached number three in 1965.
10. Considering this song by The 5th Dimension was one of the biggest hits of 1969 I should probably know this, but I'm still a little mixed-up. What heavenly body is missing from these lines? "When the moon is in the Seventh House And ____ aligns with Mars Then peace will guide the planets And love will steer the stars"

Answer: Jupiter

"Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" is a combination of two songs that originally appeared in the 1967 rock musical "Hair". It was one of a number of songs from the play that were recorded by musical acts in the late 1960s, and was arguably the most successful.

The 5th Dimension's version spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the Spring of 1969, and also ranked number two on their Year-End singles chart.
