Jim Cuddy was born in Toronto, Ontario on December 2, 1955. With a friend he met at North Toronto Collegiate Institute, Greg Keelor, he formed the band Hi-Fis. But the band did not get a recording deal after releasing its first single, and so they moved to New York in search of success. Finding none, they returned to Toronto.
