Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Beatle was the last one to join the group?

Answer: Ringo

The title of the quiz gives the order in which the Beatles joined. They formed from John's band The Quarrymen. Paul joined first, introduced to John by a mutual friend. Paul brought his friend George in next. The Quarrymen eventually became the Silver Beetles, then the Beatles, adding and dropping other musicians. Finally, just as the group was getting its first recording contract, well-renowned Liverpool drummer Ringo Starr was brought in as a stronger replacement for Peter Best, and, as members of the group often said, the rest is history.
2. Which Beatle replied "Arthur" when a reporter asked what they called their hair styles?

Answer: George

This is in a scene from "A Hard Day's Night" and is representative of some of the screwball replies all four Beatles would give to the offbeat questions reporters asked of them in their early days.
3. From 1963-1970, who was the only member who had a replacement take his place for some concert appearances?

Answer: Ringo

In June 1964, just before the Beatles were to begin a European, Asian, and Australian tour, Ringo fell sick with a fever and required a tonsilectomy. Beatles producer George Martin quickly suggested that Jimmy Nicol, a session drummer who had just done work on an album of studio musicians playing Beatles tunes, be substituted for Ringo. Nicol also had a "Beatle haircut," an unusual thing for that era, which only made him an even more logical substitute. Nicol played several dates as the band played in the Netherlands and Denmark, before Ringo rejoined the tour in Australia. Nicol received 500 pounds and an inscribed gold watch from the Beatles for his efforts.

The Sgt. Pepper song "It's Getting Better" was inspired by Jimmy - while touring, the Beatles would ask him how he was doing and he'd invariably reply "It's getting better all the time."
4. After the other three Beatles had experimented with LSD, who was the final one to try the drug?

Answer: Paul

John and George were introduced to LSD at a 1964 party given by a dentist friend of George's, who spiked their coffee sugar cubes with it. Later, the two of them and Ringo took LSD together while staying at a rented house in Los Angeles during their 1965 tour of the western United States. Paul, though he heavily used marijuana and other drugs, resisted LSD until a time in late 1966 when he let John Lennon stay with him after a recording session. McCartney wasted no time in revealing his - and the band's - LSD use to the press, saying that "LSD opened my eyes - it made me a better, more honest, more tolerant member of society, [and] brought closer to God." The rest of the Beatles, especially John, were none too pleased about the information being made public.
5. Who was the only Beatle whose first wife was not pregnant when they married?

Answer: George

John (Cynthia Powell, 1963), Ringo (Maureen Cox, 1965), and Paul (Linda Eastman, 1969) all had their first marriages occur under "shotgun circumstances," with their new brides pregnant with their first children. Only Pattie Boyd, George's first wife, was not pregnant at the time of their 1966 wedding. Actually, Paul, the last Beatle to marry, and the only one to not divorce his first wife, had been engaged twice before wedding Linda.

He proposed to an early 1960s girlfriend, Dot Rhone, when she became pregnant, breaking the engagement when she miscarried. McCartney's 1967 engagement to Jane Asher, at a time he had begun to see Linda, was broken off in mid-1968.
6. Which Beatle also authored the books "In His Own Write" and "A Spaniard in the Works?"

Answer: John

The books, both short compilations of Lennon drawings, puns and wordplay, were published in 1964 and 1965. Accepting a literary award for "In His Own Write," Lennon's entire speech consisted of him saying "Thank you very much. You've got a lucky face."
7. Who was the oldest Beatle?

Answer: Ringo

From oldest to youngest:

- Ringo (July 7, 1940)
- John (October 9, 1940)
- Paul (June 18, 1942)
- George (February 25, 1943)
8. Which Beatle was the first to release a solo album, on the Apple label?

Answer: George

George's 1968 effort, "Wonderwall Music," was the first solo album by a Beatle despite being a soundtrack, and the first record released on the group's new Apple label. Paul had released the soundtrack to the movie "The Family Way" some time earlier.
9. Which Beatle was the first to act in a feature-length motion picture not involving the rest of the group?

Answer: John

John's appearance as Private Gripweed in the 1967 film "How I Won the War" - directed by "A Hard Day's Night" director Richard Lester - also got him the honor of being on the cover of "Rolling Stone's" first issue. Since the group's 1970 breakup, Ringo Starr has compiled the most extensive acting resume of any of the Beatles.
10. Which Beatle announced the breakup of the group with the release of his 1970 solo album?

Answer: Paul

As early as 1966, first John, then later George and Ringo, had either briefly quit the band or expressed a desire to do so, yet the group stayed together, often with Paul pushing hardest for unity. So the rest of the group found it especially galling, when on April 9, 1970, Paul released his first solo album.

The record included a questionnaire press release in which Paul unequivocally stated, in several ways, that the Beatles were finished.
