Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who had the British cover hit of the song featuring the lyrics 'If you stretch my love 'til its thin enough to tear, I'll just stretch my arms to reach you anywhere'?

Answer: Marty Wilde

The song was 'Rubber Ball', and Marty Wilde got to #9 in the UK with it in 1961. The song was originally recorded by Bobby Vee, who took it to #6 on Billboard and beat Wilde's cover in peaking at #4 in Britain.
2. From which Del Shannon song come the lyrics 'I've got news for you, I was untrue too and I don't care what you say'?

Answer: So Long Baby

The lyrics came from Del Shannon's 1961 UK Top Ten hit 'So Long Baby'. It also reached #28 on the Hot 100.
3. From which song comes the lyric 'Though I tried my best to settle down, she's now alone with a broken heart'?

Answer: The Wayward Wind

'The Wayward Wind' was a UK #1 for Frank Ifield in 1963, as he had a very successful chart spell at the time. The song had previously been a hit for Gogi Grant, reaching #9 in the UK and going all the way to the top in the States back in 1956. For our American players, 'Wild Wind' was a UK hit for John Leyton.
4. For this question, I want you to complete the lyric: 'Here is the main thing I want to say ...'

Answer: I'm busy twenty-four hours a day

The song in question is Jimmy Jones' 1960 hit 'Handy Man'. It reached #2 on Billboard and was his debut British hit in going to #3. He later topped the British chart with 'Good Timin'.
5. From which song come the hopefully recognisable lyrics (that makes a change!), 'Everything you think, do and say is in the pill you took today'?

Answer: In The Year 2525

'In The Year 2525 (Exordium and Terminus)' was both a US and British chart-topper in 1969 for Denny Zager and Rick Evans.
6. Name the singer, both first name and surname, who had a hit with a song that featured the lyrics 'If I should smile, with sweet surprise, its just that you've grown up before my very eyes'.

Answer: Neil Sedaka

Neil Sedaka's 'Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen' reached #6 on the Hot 100 as 1961 turned into 1962, and in 1962 it reached the top three in Britain - emulating the success of 'Oh Carol', which reached #3 in 1959.
7. Complete this line from a 1960s hit: 'I love you but ...'

Answer: we're strangers when we meet

'Just walk on by, wait on the corner' - Leroy Van Dyke's Country classic 'Walk On By' reached #5 on Billboard in 1961, and a similar position on the UK chart in 1962. Not to be confused with the Dionne Warwick song, of course!
8. 'Are you somewhere up above, and am I still your own true love' are lyrics featured in which song?

Answer: Teen Angel

'Teen Angel' was a US #1 in 1960 for Mark Dinning. It only made #37 in the UK, and was no doubt one of the numerous death songs that encouraged Bob Luman to sing 'Let's Think About Living'.
9. The lyrics this time are 'Everybody's talkin' 'bout a new way of walkin', do you want to lose your mind'. The group, please.

Answer: The Rooftop Singers

It was the Rooftop Singers who sang 'Walk Right In' - they did well with the song too, as it topped the US chart and reached #10 in Britain in 1963.
10. Your final question this time, but can you complete the line? 'For just a little while, I though that I might lose the game, then just in time I saw the ...'

Answer: twinkle in your eye

The song in question was Ned Miller's 'From A Jack To A King'. In 1963 it reached #2 on the UK chart whilst also obtaining a peak position of #6 on the Hot 100.
So how did you do? Hopefully that's brought a few more memories flooding back, particularly from the early 1960s. I really hope you are enjoying the series and are finding the questions interesting and challenging, and I'll be back again soon with part eight.
