Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles was their first US number one hit. Which record replaced it at number one?

Answer: She Loves You

"She Loves You" by The Beatles replaced "I Want To Hold Your Hand" at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the 1st February 1964. It was number one for two weeks. It was number one for six non consecutive weeks on the UK singles chart in 1963.

The Beatles replaced themselves at number one with "She Loves You", written by Lennon/McCartney. They started to write it after appearing with Roy Orbison and fellow Liverpudlians Gerry & The Pacemakers in Newcastle, UK, in 1963.

According to various things individual Beatles have said over the years their songs have been influenced by other songs and "She Loves You" was no exception. Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney have stated that it was influenced by "Forget Him" (Bobby Rydell), "Stuck On You" (Elvis Presley) and "Twist And Shout" (The Isley Brothers). "She Loves You" was originally released in the USA in September 1963 on the Swan record label but failed to chart having sold approximately 1,000 copies.

"I Want To Hold Your Hand" gave The Beatles a number one hit for seven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964. It was number one for five weeks on the UK singles chart in 1963.
2. The record that replaced "She Loves You" was by a UK group that later in the year included it in their movie and the soundtrack album from that movie. What is the title of the record?

Answer: Can't Buy Me Love

"Can't Buy Me Love" by The Beatles replaced "She Loves You" at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the 4th April 1964. It was number one for five weeks. It was number one for three weeks on the UK singles chart the same year.

With "Can't Buy Me Love" written by Lennon/McCartney, The Beatles replaced themselves at number one for the second time. The Beatles created many landmarks and "Can't Buy Me Love" just might be the biggest of them all. In the UK it had 1,000,000 advance orders and 2,000,000 in the USA. It topped the US chart two weeks after release, jumping from number 27 to number one.

"Can't Buy Me Love" gave The Beatles three consecutive number one hits after "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was replaced by "She Loves You" which was in turn replaced by "Can't Buy Me Love" for a combined total of 14 consecutive weeks at number one. When "Can't Buy Me Love" reached number one it gave The Beatles the top five singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Answer: Louis Armstrong

"Hello, Dolly!" by Louis Armstrong replaced "Can't Buy Me Love" at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the 9th May 1964. It was number one for one week. It reached number four on the UK singles chart the same year.

"Hello, Dolly!", written by Jerry Herman, won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1965. Louis Armstrong won the Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance, Male and had the biggest hit of his career at the age of 62. Louis Armstrong sang the song with Barbara Streisand in the 1969 movie "Hello, Dolly". He did not appear in the original Broadway stage show "Hello, Dolly" in 1964 starring Carol Channing in which she sang the song.

When "Hello Dolly" hit the top of the chart, Louis Armstrong became the oldest singer to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1968 he became the oldest singer to reach number one on the UK singles chart when "What A Wonderful World"/"Cabaret" became a double A-Sided number one hit. It reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988, 17 years after his death.

Composer Mack David sued Jerry Herman claiming "Hello Dolly" was an infringement of copyright of his 1948 song "Sunflower". Jerry Herman reluctantly settled out of court for a reputed $250,000. He claimed that he had never heard the song "Sunflower".
4. "Love Me Do" by The Beatles was replaced at number one by "Chapel Of Love". Who sang it?

Answer: The Dixie Cups

"Chapel Of Love" by The Dixie Cups replaced "Love Me Do" at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the 6th June 1964. It was number one for three weeks. It reached number 22 on the UK singles chart the same year.

"Chapel Of Love" was written by Jeff Barry/Ellie Greenwich/Phil Spector. The Dixie Cups were sisters Barbara Ann and Rosa Lee Hawkins and their cousin Joan Marie Johnson from New Orleans. "Chapel Of Love" was first recorded by Darlene Love, then by The Ronettes and also by The Blossoms. It was the first release on the Red Bird record label run by songwriting/producing partners Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller with George Goldner.

"Love Me Do" was written by Lennon/McCartney. The original UK single release was the recording with Ringo playing drums. Subsequent print runs of the record used the recording that was included on the UK album "Please Please Me" with Andy White on drums and Ringo playing the tambourine. This recording was also the one used for the US single release. The very first recording with Pete Best on drums was not issued until 1995, on the "Anthology 1" album. The Beatles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

"Love Me Do" gave The Beatles a number one hit for one week on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964. It reached number 17 on the UK singles chart in 1962.
5. The fifth number one by The Beatles, "A Hard Day's Night", was replaced by a record with these lyrics. "There's no telling where love may appear Something in my heart keeps saying My someplace is here"

Answer: Everybody Loves Somebody

"Everybody Loves Somebody" by Dean Martin replaced "A Hard Day's Night" at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the 15th August 1964. It was number one for one week. It reached number 11 on the UK singles chart the same year.

"Everybody Loves Somebody" was written by Coslow/Taylor/Lane in 1947. Dean Martin had sung it on a Bob Hope radio show in 1948 but did not record it until making the "Dream With Dean" album in 1964. This recording was a small ensemble jazz version of the song but he then made another version with full orchestra. He made this recording for his next album, the re-named "Everybody Loves Somebody".

Dean Martin had not had a Billboard Top 20 hit since "Volare (Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu)" reached number 12 in 1958. Who would have guessed that a middle aged crooner from another era would knock The Beatles off of the number one spot. Maybe this event lessened his long held resentment towards Rock and Roll.

"A Hard Day's Night" gave The Beatles a number one hit for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964. It was number one for three weeks on the UK singles chart the same year.
6. "I Feel Fine" by The Beatles was replaced at number one by a song that it had replaced at number one three weeks earlier. Which song by The Supremes with these lyrics was it? "But tears won't wash away the fears That you're never ever gonna return To ease the fire that within me burns"

Answer: Come See About Me

"Come See About Me" by The Supremes replaced "Mr. Lonely" by Bobby Vinton at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the 19th December 1964. It was number one for one week. It was then replaced at number one by "I Feel Fine" by The Beatles but regained the number one spot for one week, replacing "I Feel Fine" on the 16th January 1965. It reached number 27 on the UK singles chart in 1965.

"Come See About Me" was written by Brian Holland/Lamont Dozier/Eddie Holland. It was the third of five consecutive number one hits for The Supremes. All five songs were written by the Motown songwriting/production team of Brian Holland/Lamont Dozier/Eddie Holland. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. The Supremes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998.

"I Feel Fine" gave The Beatles a number one hit for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964/65. It was number one for five weeks on the UK singles chart in 1964/65.
7. "Eight Days A Week" was the seventh number one hit by The Beatles. Its run at number one was stopped by a group who were having their fourth number one hit with a song that included these lyrics. Who were they? "Each time you leave my door I watch you walk down the street Knowing your other love you'll meet"

Answer: The Supremes

"Stop! In The Name Of Love" by The Supremes replaced "Eight Days A Week" at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the 27th March 1965. It was number one for two weeks. It reached number seven on the UK singles chart the same year.

"Stop! In The Name Of Love" was written by Brian Holland/Lamont Dozier/Eddie Holland. The song was nominated for the 1966 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Rock and Roll Group Vocal Performance. It lost out to "Flowers On The Wall" by the Statler Brothers. A great record but Rock and Roll? The mind boggles! Anyway their 1974 record "Whatever Happened To Randolph Scott" was much better. At the time of "Stop! In The Name Of Love" The Supremes were still the classic line up of Florence Ballard, Diana Ross and Mary Wilson.

"Eight Days A Week" gave The Beatles a number one hit for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. It was not released as a single in the UK.
8. The Beach Boys cancelled The Beatles "Ticket To Ride" and put their girl at the top. Which Beach Boys record was it?

Answer: Help Me, Rhonda

"Help Me, Rhonda" by The Beach Boys replaced "Ticket To Ride" at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the 29th May 1965. It was number one for two weeks. It reached number 27 on the UK singles chart the same year.

"Help Me, Rhonda" was written by Brian Wilson/Mike Love. It was The Beach Boys second number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and their first single with Al Jardine on lead vocal. The single is a different recording to the version on The Beach Boys "Today!" album released in March 1965. The title is a different spelling also, the name Rhonda is spelled Ronda on the album version.

Among the musicians on the album version are Hal Blaine (drums), Glen Campbell (guitar), Billy Lee Riley (harmonica) and Leon Russell (piano). Al Jardine recorded the song again with Steve Miller on his 2010 album "A Postcard From California". The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

"Ticket To Ride" gave The Beatles a number one hit for one week on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. It was number one for three weeks on the UK singles chart the same year.
9. The Beatles may indeed have been singing "Help!" when they saw Barry McGuire coming up to take the top spot from them. What is the missing word from the title of his number one song "Eve Of __________"?

Answer: Destruction

"Eve Of Destruction" by Barry McGuire replaced "Help!" at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the 25th September 1965. It was number one for one week. It reached number three on the UK singles chart the same year.

"Eve Of Destruction" was written by P. F. Sloan. The song was turned down by The Byrds but was recorded by The Turtles for their 1965 album "It Ain't Me Babe". Their version was eventually released and peaked at number 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970.

In the USA some radio stations claimed that the Barry McGuire version was an aid to the enemy in Vietnam and banned it. It was also banned by the UK offshore pirate radio station Radio Scotland. The BBC put it on their restricted list and it could not be played on general entertainment programmes. Barry McGuire later became a born again Christian, renounced the song and refused to perform it for many years.

"Help!" gave The Beatles a number one hit for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. It was number one for three weeks on the UK singles chart the same year.
10. The Beatles were singing about "Yesterday". What were The Rolling Stones replacing them with at the top?

Answer: Get Off Of My Cloud

"Get Off Of My Cloud" by The Rolling Stones replaced "Yesterday" at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the 6th November 1965. It was number one for two weeks. It was number one for three weeks on the UK singles chart the same year.

"Get Off Of My Cloud" was written by Mick Jagger/Keith Richards. It was produced by their then manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Keith Richards, who did not like the record, thought it was one of Oldham's worst productions. In a 1995 interview with "Rolling Stone" magazine Mick Jagger said, "It's a stop bugging me, post teenage alienation song. The grown-up world was a very ordered society in the early '60s, and I was coming out of it. America was even more ordered than anywhere else. I found it was a very restrictive society in thought and behavior and dress".

In the 2003 book "According to The Rolling Stones", Kieth Richards says ""Get Off Of My Cloud" was basically a response to people knocking on our door asking us for the follow up to "Satisfaction". Well I like it and it is still one of my favourite Rolling Stones records. The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

"Yesterday" gave The Beatles a number one hit for four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. It was not released as a single in the UK at the time but on release in 1976 it reached number eight on the UK singles chart.
