Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Everly Brothers topped the charts in the spring of 1960 with this "funny" song. Name it.

Answer: Cathy's Clown

"Cathy's Clown" hit the top of the charts in the spring of 1960 and it was The Everly Brothers first release after changing record labels. What a release it was. It proved to be their biggest single ever, spending five weeks at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts.

It also spent seven weeks at number one in the U.K. The song made the list of Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs Of All Time" at number 149.
2. Elvis Presley's "Surrender" was actually an Italian song that was translated and rearranged.

Answer: True

Presley spent two weeks at number one in the U.S. with this song and also got to the top of the charts in the U.K. The song was originally titled "Torna a Surriento" or "Come Back to Sorrento" in translation. It is estimated to have been written in 1902.

The original song's composer is not clear, but the songwriter team of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, who wrote many of Presley's hits, got a hold of this one and helped make it a top of the charts success.
3. This Connie Francis ballad became her final number one hit in 1962. Which song was it?

Answer: Don't Break the Heart That Loves You

Connie had three number ones in her career. This song the last of them. The others were "Everybody's Somebody's Fool", and "My Heart Has a Mind of Its Own". The song here was number one for one week in March of 1962. Francis had numerous other hits in the Top 10, including all three of the other choices listed.
4. Ruby and the Romantics took "Our Day Will Come" to the top of the charts in 1963 as a one-hit wonder.

Answer: False

They actually charted three Top 40 hits during 1963 and early 1964. The others were "My Summer Love" which reached number 16 on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts and also "Hey There Lonely Boy" which got as high as number 27. They did record some other songs that actually were covered and became hits for other artists such as Eddie Holman, The Marvelettes and The Carpenters. "Our Day Will Come" took the number one spot for one week March of 1963.

In the 1970s it was covered by Frankie Valli as a solo artist and it reached as high as number 11 on the charts.
5. Mary Wells had a great career. She had a number of songs make it into the Top 10. Which was her only number one song?

Answer: My Guy

All of the four listed songs were Top 10 hits for Wells, but it was "My Guy", penned by the immortal Smokey Robinson, that spent two weeks at number one in the spring of 1964, during the height of the "British Invasion". Ironically, she left Motown Records at the height of her success, and her career was never the same.

The song was written by Smokey Robinson, and it was the first song they recorded with David Ruffin as lead singer. Amazingly, it only was number one for one week in March 1965, but 40 years later it is the group's most recognizable song.
