Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Times were changing in 1972. A song called "Me and Mrs. Jones" hit the top in 1972. What was the subject matter of the song?

Answer: An extra-marital affair

Soul singer Billy Paul took this song, written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, and turned into his only number one hit when it topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts for three weeks in December of 1970. The lyrics tell the story of the singer and his lover, Mrs. Jones.
2. "Photograph" was a number one song for Ringo Starr in 1973. Which other former Beatle can be heard on the recording?

Answer: George Harrison

Not only was Harrison on the recording doing back up vocals, and playing a 12 string guitar, but he co-wrote the song. "Photograph" spent one week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts during November of 1973. This was Ringo's first number one hit as a solo artist after the breakup of the Beatles.
3. Canadian singer Andy Kim rocked to the top of the charts in 1974 with this catchy tune. Can you remember it?

Answer: Rock Me Gently

Kim recorded all of these tunes, but it was "Rock Me Gently" that brought him back to the forefront of American pop music in 1974 when the song got to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in September that year. Kim's prior appearance on the U.S. charts was a remake of The Ronettes "Be My Baby" which peaked at number 17 in 1970.
4. Written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey, "One of These Nights" was a number one song for The Eagles in 1975. The song's subject matter is procrastination.

Answer: True

"One of These Nights" was a number one hit for The Eagles, spending a week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1975. Co-writer Glenn Frey was once asked what the song was about, and he responded that we've all said at one time or another that we're going to do something and we really are dreaming about it sort of like a fantasy, things like buying a house, buying a car, getting a girl, something we hope will come true someday. That's what he says the song was really about.
5. The disco sound brought The BeeGees back to the top of the charts in 1975. What song do you think propelled them there?

Answer: Jive Talkin'

All the songs were tunes recorded by The BeeGees, but they re-invented themselves with "Jive Talkin'" which spent two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the summer of 1975 as well as attaining a number five placing in the U.K. It was their first U.S. number one song since "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" which topped the charts in 1971. "Jive Talkin'" ushered in the group's disco incarnation which would go on for the rest of the decade.
6. "If You Leave Me Now" was a number one hit for the supergroup Chicago in 1976. This was their first U.S. number one hit.

Answer: True

Chicago had been releasing hit single after hit single since 1970, but it took "If You Leave Me Now" to finally give them their first Billboard Hot 100 number one tune in 1976. The song spent two weeks at the top of the charts in the fall of 1976. It also reached the top of the charts in both the U.K. and Australia.

At the 1977 Grammy Awards, the song became a double winner picking up the award for Best Arrangement with Vocal Accompaniment, and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
7. "Rock N' Me" was a number one hit for the Steve Miller Band in 1976. It was the only Billboard number one hit for the group during their career.

Answer: False

"Rock N' Me" actually became their second number one tune when it reached the top of the charts for a one week stay in the fall of 1976. They had previously scored a number one tune with "The Joker" in 1973.
8. Barry Manilow made it to the top of the charts in 1977 with this tune, or at least I thought so till today. What tune ?

Answer: Looks Like We Made it

Of the Manilow recordings listed, only "Looks Like We Made It" got to the top of the U.S. Billboard charts when it peaked at number one in July of 1977. It is a cut of an album called "This One's for You". The song is actually a negative song, for if you follow the lyrics, the couple described in the song each ended up with a successful relationship, but not with each other.
9. Andy Gibb, whose brothers formed the BeeGees, got in on the act in 1977 with his first American release, which became a number one tune. Which tune was it?

Answer: I Just Want to Be Your Everything

Gibb co-wrote "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" along with his brother Barry, and the song shot to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for three weeks in August of 1977. After slipping from the top of the charts for a month, it regained the top spot for one more week in September that year, which was a pretty rare feat. Gibb would go on to have two more number one hits following this one, but those will appear in another quiz.
10. Styx was a popular American group that had but one Billboard number one hit, a song written for the wife of one of the band members. Can you name the 1979 tune?

Answer: Babe

It was "Babe", written by band leader Dennis DeYoung as a birthday present for his wife Suzanne, that hit the top of the charts in December of 1979 as well as attaining a number six placing in the U.K. This was the group's only Billboard chart topper during their careers.
