Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before Victoria joined the Spice Girls, she trained as a dancer and appeared in various shows, as well as auditioning for the film 'Tank Girl'. Which future Spice Girl was also at the audition?

Answer: Geri Halliwell

Victoria's Equity card had her name as 'Victoria Aadams' as there was already a Victoria Adams registered with Equity, and each performer must have a unique name (Equity is the UK's trade union for actors, models, set designers and other performers). Geri Halliwell recalled meeting her in the audition queue for 'Tank Girl' and thinking she was weird, because while most of the women auditioning wore standard 'Tank Girl' type outfits - ripped fishnets, shorts and so on - Victoria wore a suit.

She was also in a group with two men and two other women, called Persuasion, who she later described as 'terrible'.
2. Which song did Victoria sing in her audition for the Spice Girls (or Touch, as they were originally called)?

Answer: Mein Herr

'Mein Herr' is a song from the musical 'Cabaret'. 'I'm So Excited' was Melanie Chisholm's audition song, while Melanie B sang 'The Greatest Love of All'. In the second round, the task was to create a dance routine to Eternal's 'Just a Step from Heaven', and the girls were split into groups; Victoria was in a group with Melanie Brown, Michelle Stephenson - who would later be replaced by Emma Bunton - and Lianne Morgan, who was later rejected for being too old.

In the third round of the auditions, the remaining girls had to learn and sing Stevie Wonder's 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours'.
3. Why did Victoria not sing on 'Wannabe'?

Answer: She was at a wedding

Victoria missed out on the recording of 'Wannabe' as she was at a wedding that day, and did not add vocals later. However, she did fill in for Geri when they performed the song at concerts after Geri left. Years after the Spice Girls split, it was revealed that her microphone would be turned off at some concerts; however, she does have solo lines in songs such as 'Goodbye' and 'Too Much'.
4. The video for 'Too Much' has each Spice Girl paying tribute to various films and/or film characters. Which character did Victoria play?

Answer: Catwoman

Victoria plays Catwoman in the video (I didn't actually realise she was supposed to be Catwoman until reading the Wikipedia article!) As for the other Girls' scenes, Emma's is based on 'Poltergeist', Melanie C's on 'Year of the Dragon', Melanie B's on 'Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome' and Geri's on 'Gilda'. It's even filmed in black and white!
5. Victoria first met footballer David Beckham in 1997, thanks to the machinations of then manager Simon Fuller, and went on to marry him two years later. For which football team was he playing at the time?

Answer: Manchester United

Victoria had previously gone out with Stuart Bilton, a local boy who worked in a flower shop, but Simon Fuller thought she needed a famous boyfriend. A Manchester United supporter, he took Victoria to a football match between United and Chelsea - despite Victoria not being at all interested in football - and engineered a meeting between the promising young United midfielder David Beckham and Victoria in the VIP lounge at Stamford Bridge. Fuller then got her a ticket to a United home game at Old Trafford, and Victoria gave Beckham her number.

The couple would go on to dominate the tabloid press for many years, and sold their wedding rights to celebrity magazine 'OK'.
6. Victoria gave birth to her and David Beckham's first child in 1999. What was the name of the baby?

Answer: Brooklyn

Brooklyn Beckham, named after the city in which he was conceived, was born on 4th March 1999 in London. Romeo and Cruz are his younger brothers, born in 2002 and 2005 respectively, and Harper is the name of his younger sister, who was born in 2011. Elton John and his boyfriend David Furnish were named as Brooklyn's godparents. Both he and his mother were the subject of a kidnap plot in 2000, which was fortunately picked up on by Scotland Yard, and the Beckhams were moved to a secret location; Victoria also received a death threat when she was due to perform with the Spice Girls at the Brit Awards, and had to be taken off stage when a laser pointer light was seen on her chest.

As a teenager, Brooklyn took up photography and published a book of photos, with mixed reviews.
7. In 2000, Victoria released her first solo single, 'Out of Your Mind'. It was a collaboration with True Steppers and Dane Bowers. Of which boy band was Dane Bowers a former member?

Answer: Another Level

Dane Bowers was formerly a member of Another Level, which also included Wayne Williams, Bobak Kianoush and Mark Baron. They had a Number One hit with 'Freak Me' in 1998, and also collaborated with Jay-Z on 'Be Alone No More'. He and Victoria teamed up with UK garage duo True Steppers to record 'Out of Your Mind'.

The song was involved in a much-publicised battle for the Number One spot with 'Groovejet', a collaboration between Italian producer Spiller and former theaudience frontwoman Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Despite Victoria going out of her way to publicise the song, 'Groovejet' beat her to the top spot.
8. Victoria released her self-titled solo album in 2001. How many singles were released from the album?

Answer: 2

Despite essentially being her signature song, 'Out of Your Mind' did not feature on 'Victoria Beckham'. Victoria only released two singles from the album, 'Not Such an Innocent Girl' and 'A Mind of Its Own'. Like former bandmate Melanie B, she chose to focus on a more R'n'B oriented direction, for which the Spice Girls had also opted on their third album 'Forever' (much to the disappointment of many of their fans). 'Not Such an Innocent Girl' competed for the top spot in the UK singles chart with Kylie Minogue's comeback single 'Can't Get You Out of My Head'; Kylie won the battle, while Victoria's own single peaked at Number Six. 'I Wish' was intended to be the third single, but was shelved.
9. As well as being a Spice Girl, Victoria is also a fashion designer and model. Which brand, founded by Damon Dash, did she promote in 2003?

Answer: Rocawear

Damon Dash, a record producer and co-founder of the Roc-a-Fella label with Jay-Z, met Victoria through model Naomi Campbell. He later stated that he had no idea who Victoria was and that he was unimpressed with her solo album. He introduced her to friends of his and offered to work with her on music if she modelled for his fashion line, Rocawear.

Much was made in the tabloid press of Victoria exchanging her signature dresses for baggy jeans and jackets. Simon Fuller, who was managing Victoria's solo career, disapproved of Dash and thought his music wasn't right for Victoria, and Dash in turn was annoyed that Fuller did not want to discuss Victoria with him. Victoria released a double A-side, 'This Groove' - a Dash R'n'B collaboration, which proved to be more popular - and 'Let Your Head Go', a more upbeat pop track, in 2003.

It was intended for her second album, but Telstar, her record company, went bankrupt and the album was shelved.
10. Did Victoria perform with the Spice Girls on their 2019 European tour?

Answer: No

Although Victoria was present for the 2007 reunion tour - where she posed on a catwalk instead of singing a solo like the other Spice Girls - and the 2012 Olympics performance, she did not participate in the 2019 tour, stating that she wanted to focus on her fashion business.

Originally, the Spice Girls reformed as a trio, known as GEM (Geri, Emma and Melanie B) and were going to release a song called 'Song for Her', but this was shelved due to Geri's pregnancy. Melanie C returned for the 2019 tour. Simon Fuller claimed in a 2016 interview in 'Metro' that Victoria had always felt uncomfortable in the Spice Girls and that fashion was her real passion, and that he had encouraged her to become a fashion designer after the group split.
