The Finnish heavy metal band Amorphis was formed in 1990. The band's initial lineup consisted of lead vocalist / rhythm guitarist Tomi Koivusaari, lead guitarist Esa Holopainen, drummer / keyboardist Jan Rechberger and bassist Olli-Pekka Laine. Additional band members would join at various points throughout the band's history. Amorphis' first album "The Karelian Isthmus" was released in 1992.

In its early years Amorphis' music was more of a death metal genre. Today, their music is considered to be progressive metal.
