Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This band took the Bob Dylan tune "It Ain't Me Babe" and turned it into their first top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. Can you name the band?

Answer: The Turtles

The band, which was formed in Westchester, California, in 1965, was originally called the Crossfires and performed surf-rock music. Due to the changing musical trend at the time, they became a folk-rock band and changed their name to the Tyrtles, an intentional misspelling a la the Byrds and the Beatles.

The trendy spelling didn't last though and soon they became the Turtles. "It Ain't Me Babe" peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, the first of six top 20 hits the group would have. The Turtles broke up in 1970, but two of the founding members, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, still perform today under the name of Flo and Eddie.
2. This Bob Dylan song, a top five hit from the LP "Highway 61 Revisited", caused quite a stir at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when Dylan performed the number PLUGGED IN. Can you name the song?

Answer: Like a Rolling Stone

"Like a Rolling Stone" peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and was Dylan's highest charting single to date. At the Newport Folk Festival Dylan performed his first electric set since high school with a backing band consisting of Al Kooper and three members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

There were some cheers from the crowd, but mostly booing, which led to Dylan and the band leaving the stage after just three songs. Rumor has it that folk legend Pete Seeger was running around backstage looking for an axe to cut the power cords, but during an interview with the radio program "Democracy Now!" he denied that claim.
3. The McCoys had a top five hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965 with this catchy tune. Can you name it?

Answer: Hang On Sloopy

"Hang On Sloopy" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in October of 1965. The McCoys had two other songs that charted in the top 30, cover versions of Peggy Lee's "Fever" also from 1965 and Ritchie Valens' "Come On Let's Go" from 1966, which reached number seven and number 22 respectively. Rick Derringer, one of the founding members of the band, went on to have a fairly successful solo career and had a top 30 hit with "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" which reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1973.
4. This British Invasion band launched the careers of three of the greatest guitar players in Rock and Roll history. Their single "For Your Love" was a top ten hit in 1965. Can you name the band?

Answer: The Yardbirds

The Yardbirds were formed in London in 1963 and had a number of hits in the UK and the US in the mid '60s. "For Your Love" reached number three on the UK singles chart and number six on the Billboard Hot 100. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were all members of the group during their five year existence. Clapton from 1963 to 1965, Beck from 1965 to 1966 and Page from 1966 to 1968. In October of 1968 Page was joined by Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones and they became the New Yardbirds, eventually changing their name to Led Zeppelin.
5. This tune, from Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, was the number one song on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1965 despite never reaching number one on the weekly Hot 100. Can you name this song?

Answer: Wooly Bully

"Wooly Bully" was the first song to finish number one for the year, but never top the weekly charts. Two other songs managed to accomplish the same feat, Faith Hill's "Breathe" in 2000 and Lifehouse"s "Hanging by a Moment" in 2001. All three songs peaked at number two on the weekly Billboard Hot 100.

Despite never reaching the top spot the song stayed on the charts for 18 weeks, more than any other song that calendar year and was also nominated for a Grammy Award.
6. In 2004 this song by the Rolling Stones placed second on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". What classic tune was it?

Answer: (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 10, 1965 and stayed there for four weeks. It was the Stones' first number one in the US and their fourth number one on the UK charts. The song also ranked number three on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles chart.
7. Gary Lewis & the Playboys had their first and only number one hit with this GEM of a song. Can you name it?

Answer: This Diamond Ring

"This Diamond Ring" hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 20, 1965 and stayed there for two weeks. Gary Lewis, the son of comedian Jerry Lewis, by his own admission did not have a very strong singing voice, because of this, overdubbing tricks were used in the studio to enhance his voice.

In fact the Playboys didn't even play their instruments on this particular single. Session musicians from the legendary Wrecking Crew, which included Hal Blaine on drums, Carol Kaye on bass and Leon Russell on keyboards, provided the music for the recording.
8. What is the name of the "Mrs." who has a "Lovely Daughter" in this chart topping tune from Herman's Hermits?

Answer: Brown

"Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in May of 1965. It stayed at number one for three weeks and was their first number one hit in the US, beginning a string of 11 top ten hits over the next two years. After the group disbanded in 1971, lead singer Peter Noone started a solo career and had some minor success.

He still performs concerts today and also hosts a radio program entitled "Something Good" on the Sirius XM station 60s on 6.
9. This Righteous Brothers' number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 is considered by many to be the perfect example of Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" recording technique. Can you name the song?

Answer: You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling

Written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" reached number one in February 1965 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK singles chart. The song was ranked number 34 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" and in December 1999, the performing-rights organization Broadcast Music, Inc. ranked the tune as the most-played song on American radio and television in the 20th century.
10. "I'll Never Find Another You" was a top five hit for The Seekers in 1965. What talented young lady sang lead on this song?

Answer: Judith Durham

The Seekers originally formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1962. Judith Durham joined the group as their lead singer in 1963 and they went on to become the first Australian pop music group to achieve major chart and sales success in the United Kingdom and the United States. "I'll Never Find Another You" peaked at number four on the billboard Hot 100 and hit number one on both the UK and Australian singles charts.

The group broke up in 1968, when Durham left to pursue a solo career.
