Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This song was originally sung by Roger Miller and covered by dozens of other artists from Kenny Rogers to Pink. Its most famous rendition appears on an album named "Pearl". Which song is it?

Answer: Me And Bobby McGee

"Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose".

Written by Fred Foster and Kris Kristofferson, who also sang it in his debut album. Janis Joplin posthumously topped the US charts with her version of this classic, which made it to her album "Pearl". From its first release in 1969 till 1974 it appeared on as many as twenty albums by different artists, and many more times ever since.
2. The timeless lyrics "push pineapple, shake the tree" appear on which song made famous by British Euro Pop duo Black Lace?

Answer: Agadoo

"To the left / To the right / Jump up and down and to the knees".

This abhorrent calypso tune became the nightmare of countless human beings whose dream holiday was laced and tarred with incessant replays of it in full volume by the hotel pool. I personally prefer Chumbawamba's John Peel Session version.
3. Which of the following is a ballad written by Paul Simon depicting the hard-fought life of a young man who moved to New York City?

Answer: The Boxer

"When I left my home and my family / I was no more than a boy".

"The Boxer" appears on Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" LP. Simon commented more than once that the lyrics pertain to his personal state of mind at the time of writing. He certainly fought, and most certainly remained.
4. Which song opens with a kid chanting "This generation / Rules the nation / With version"?

Answer: Pass The Dutchie

"Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side".

Indeed, the 1982 reggae hit "Pass The Dutchie" by the makeshift teenager group Musical Youth was a version. The original was titled "Pass The Kutchie", and was released in the same year by The Mighty Diamonds. The lyrics had to undergo certain modifications.
5. The last album of The Smiths includes a song spoken from the mouth of a disillusioned and bitter left behind lover who comes to wish his ex an "Unhappy Birthday". What is this album's name?

Answer: Strangeways, Here We Come

The lyrics start with "I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday", then the harsh reasons are detailed, and in the end comes a long coda of "From the one you left behind".

"Unhappy Birthday" is the seventh song on "Strangeways, Here We Come". Strangeways was the name of a notorious Victorian prison in Manchester, which is still in operation under the name HMP Manchester. The albums listed are The Smiths' only four studio albums, released between 1984-1987.
6. "Your lipstick stains on the front lobe of my left side brains" is the opening line of which hit by Train?

Answer: Hey, Soul Sister

Train succeeded in reviving their career with "Hey, Soul Sister". It sold millions of digital copies, was used in several Samsung commercials and topped charts in multiple countries. Lord knows why.
7. "Love In Vain" is another song of separation from a loved one. While its most famous rendition is by The Rolling Stones, who is its writer and original performer who, according to myth, sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the grace to play the Blues?

Answer: Robert Johnson

"When the train, it left the station / With two lights on behind / Well, the blue light was my blues / And the red light was my mind / All my love's in vain".

Being a huge musical talent who died at the age of 27 makes Robert Johnson an early inductee to the infamous "27 Club". By the way, not many know that the original devil legend was told on another Delta blues wizard, Tommy Johnson, who served also as an inspiration to the namesake character from the Coen Brothers' movie "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?".
8. Guitar player Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie's alter-ego, was left-handed.

Answer: True

"Ziggy played guitar / Jamming good with Wierd and Gilly / And The Spiders from Mars / He played it left hand / But made it too far".

You'll find Bowie's 1972 album "The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" in many a "greatest album of all times" listings. It paved the way to Glam rock's passage to popularity. Punk rock would not have been the same if it wasn't for it, and some argue that it would not have been at all.
9. She is mostly known for the songs "Luka" and "Tom's Diner", but "Left Of Center" is not too bad either. Who is this American female solo singer-songwriter?

Answer: Suzanne Vega

"If you want me / You can find me / Left of center / Off of the strip".

"Left Of Center" was written to the measures of Molly Ringwald's character in the movie "Pretty In Pink". On the other hand (right, it's a pun), Vega's "Tom's Diner" was written in Tom's Restaurant located on 2880 Broadway, New York City. It is the very same diner shown many times from the outside in "Seinfeld". I ate there once. Do go, but not just for the food.
10. How many times does the word "left" appear in the piece "Afro-Left" from the album "Leftism" by prog-house UK band Leftfield?

Answer: 0

"Afro-Left" is an instrumental laden with syllables which are made to sound as if taken from an African dialect however in fact are gibberish.
