Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Don't Stop' (1977)

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

The song, written by Christine McVie and performed primarily by her and Lindsay Buckingham, first appeared on one of the best selling albums of all time - 'Rumours'. It was released as a single in 1977, getting to number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 but only managing 32 on the UK Singles Chart.

The song, particularly the lyrics 'don't stop thinking about tomorrow', was adopted by Bill Clinton for his presidential campaign of 1992.
2. 'Don't Stop Me Now' (1979)

Answer: Queen

Every member of Queen wrote songs, but 'Don't Stop Me Now' was one of Freddie Mercury's. It was a track on the album 'Jazz' which also featured 'Bicycle Race' and 'Fat Bottomed Girls'. As a single, 'Don't Stop Me Now' reached number nine of the UK Singles Chart and number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100.

A cover version of the song, by McFly, reached number one in the UK in 2006, helped by being a charity single for that year's Sport Relief event.
3. 'Bus Stop' (1966)

Answer: The Hollies

The song was written by Graham Gouldman, who went on to find fame himself as a member of 10cc - they had a big hit in 1975 with 'I'm Not in Love'. 'Bus Stop' was recorded while Graham Nash was still a member. It was successful in both their home country, reaching number five on the UK Singles Chart and hitting the same spot on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Another of the band's 1966 singles would also have fitted the theme of this quiz as it was called 'Stop Stop Stop'. This was co-written by Nash with singer Allan Clarke and guitarist/singer Tony Hicks - the song also reached the top ten in both the UK and USA.
4. 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' (1987)

Answer: Michael Jackson

The song also credits Siedah Garrett, who sang the female part after both Whitney Houston and Barbra Streisand declined the role. The song was taken from the album 'Bad', which also had the tracks 'Man in the Mirror', 'Dirty Diana' and 'Smooth Criminal'. 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' was a number one hit for Michael in several countries, including the USA and UK.

Another candidate for the quiz was 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough', a 1979 hit for Jackson in the earlier years of his solo career.
5. 'Stop Your Sobbing' (1979)

Answer: Pretenders

The song was written by Ray Davies, lead singer of The Kinks, and was one of the songs on their first album, titled 'Kinks'. Although never released by them as a single, The Pretenders covered the song as their first single, released in 1979. Led by American Chrissie Hynde, backed (perhaps unexpectedly) by a band from Hereford, the Pretenders made little impact with the song although it did creep into the lower reaches of the top forty on the UK Singles Chart. Later releases, notably 'Brass in Pocket', also from 1979, did very much better.
6. 'Who'll Stop the Rain' (1970)

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Written by John Fogerty, 'Who'll Stop the Rain' appeared on the band's album 'Cosmo's Factory', also dating from 1970. It was released as a double sided single with 'Travellin' Band' and reached number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 to continue the band's record of never reaching higher in the charts than that in their home country.

In the UK, 'Who'll Stop the Rain' wasn't listed separately, although 'Travellin' Band' is listed as a number eight hit on the UK Singles Chart. CCR did at least have a number one in the UK, with 'Bad Moon Rising' in 1969.
7. 'Stop' (1998)

Answer: Spice Girls

The chorus begins 'Stop right now, thank you very much', but the official song title is just 'Stop'. The song was written by the band members with Andy Watkins and Paul Wilson, who also contributed to 'Too Much'. 'Stop' appeared on the album 'Spiceworld', recorded in 1997 while the Spice Girls were at the peak of their fame. 'Stop' was released as a single, and broke their run of number one singles in the UK when it stalled at number two on the charts. Normal service was resumed with their next single, 'Viva Forever', which returned them to their customary number one position on the charts.
8. 'Stop! In the Name of Love' (1965)

Answer: Supremes

This is vintage Motown, with the song written by Holland, Dozier, Holland, sung by Diana Ross as part of The Supremes, before her name was added to the group name, and with backing provided by the Funk Brothers, the session musicians who worked for Motown in Detroit. On the US Billboard Hot 100, 'Stop! In the Name of Love' became the group's fourth consecutive number one hit, after 'Where Did Our Love Go', 'Baby Love' and 'Come See About Me', all of them in 1964, and followed by a fifth with 'Back in My Arms Again' in 1965. 'Reflections', in 1967, was the first single credited to Diana Ross and the Supremes.
9. 'Don't Stop Believin'' (1981)

Answer: Journey

Surprisingly, not as big a chart hit as you might think, 'Don't Stop Believin'' was taken from Journey's album 'Escape', also from 1981. The song was written by three members of the band - Steve Perry, Neil Schon and Jonathan Cain. It managed only number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100 on its first release and made no impact at all in the UK.

The song gained a new lease of life in the 2000s thanks to the television programme 'Glee', where it was featured regularly sung by several members of the cast.
10. 'I Can't Stop Loving You' (1962)

Answer: Ray Charles

'I Can't Stop Loving You' was written by country singer Don Gibson, who took 'Sea of Heartbreak' into the mainstream charts in 1961. Gibson recorded the song himself and it appeared as a B side of his song 'Oh Lonesome Me' in late 1957. The version by Ray Charles was the follow up to 'Hit the Road Jack', which had been a huge hit for Charles in 1961. 'I Can't Stop Loving You' became one of his best known songs, reflected by chart success in both the UK and USA.

The song has been covered by numerous other singers, with Paul Anka, Van Morrison and Bryan Adams among them.
