Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Madonna kicked off the twenty-first century with a cover version of which classic of folk-rock, originally recorded by Don McLean?

Answer: American Pie

Madonna's version of this classic anthem was much shorter than the original, featuring only part of the first verse and cutting verses three through five altogether, leaving only verse two and six intact.

Despite my own personal opinion (That's just wrong!), Madonna's version was an international hit, reaching the number one spot in the UK, Canada, Australia and a number of other European countries.

"Vincent" and "Castles in the Air" are other Don McLean songs; the former is a tribute to troubled artist Vincent van Gogh. "Crying" was originally a hit for Roy Orbison but Don McLean had a hit with a cover version of it in 1980.
2. Many of us have a favourite Christmas song. I never expected to hear mine in anything but its original form. Which former Boyzone member had me screaming 'that is just wrong!' when he released a cover version of "Fairytale of New York" with Maire Brennan?

Answer: Ronan Keating

Originally performed by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl, "Fairytale of New York" frequently finds its way to the number one spot in audience polls of Christmas favourites. Significantly, upon its release, it was pipped to the post in the quest for the coveted title of Christmas number one in the UK. It was the Pet Shop Boys with a cover version of "Always on My Mind" that claimed top spot in 1987. The original did make the number one spot in Ireland.

The song has been the subject of some controversy due to the insults traded by the male and female vocalists in parts of the song; BBC Radio 1 dubbed out specific words in the song on December 18, 2007. The audience reaction was so strong that they reversed this decision before the end of the day. The Ronan Keating version omitted the offending language. This didn't work in its favour; it was voted on of the worst cover versions of all time on a Channel 4 television program on the topic. People don't like their favourites messed with!

Shane Filan and Nicky Byrne were both members of Westlife and Mikey Graham was a member of Boyzone.
3. In 1966 Percy Sledge released his soulful rendition of "When a Man Loves a Woman". Which American singer songwriter, known for his flowing locks, released a cover version in 1991?

Answer: Michael Bolton

Elton John and Phil Collins are both English singer-songwriters. Paul Simon is an American singer-songwriter, known for both his solo work and as one half of Simon & Garfunkel.

"When a Man Loves a Woman" reached the number one position in both the US Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts when it was originally released. Internationally, it enjoyed a revival when it was used in an advertisement for Levi's jeans. The song appeared on "Originals", a 1993 compilation album, alongside songs from Ben E King, Marvin Gaye, The Clash and the Steve Miller Band, with every song having featured in a series of ads for Levi's.

Not everyone disliked Bolton's cover version, in fact, he won a Grammy music award for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance in 1992 for this very song. I couldn't help it though, I still think that's just wrong!
4. In 1968, William Shatner left many scratching their heads when he released a cover version of which Beatles classic?

Answer: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

"The Transformed Man" was a 'spoken word' album and featured William Shatner dramatically reading the lyrics to "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" with a sample of the original song. Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" also received the Shatner treatment on this album and in 1978, Shatner 'performed' Elton John's "Rocket Man" at The Science Fiction Film Awards. "Help!" is another Beatles classic, and quite possibly what some were screaming after hearing some of William Shatner's 'music'...me I was still saying that's just wrong!
5. Britney Spears' version of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was actually a cover version of another cover. Which female vocalist, often credited with the original, made the song famous?

Answer: Joan Jett

"I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was originally written by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker. Their band, Arrows, released the song in 1975 to little commercial success. In 1981, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts reached number one in the Billboard Charts with their version of the song.

The Britney Spears version appeared in the movie "Crossroads" in 2002, in which the character she played sings it in a karaoke bar. Spears mistakenly credited the song to Pat Benatar, of "Love is a Battlefield" fame.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were members of Fleetwood Mac, with Nicks providing female vocals and Buckingham providing male vocals as well as playing lead guitar.
6. Guns 'n' Roses "Sweet Child o' Mine" was given the cover version treatment by which American singer-songwriter, known for such hits as "If it Makes you Happy" and "Everyday is a Winding Road"?

Answer: Sheryl Crow

The cover version appeared on Crow's third studio album, "The Globe Sessions" and appeared as part of the soundtrack for the 1999 movie "Big Daddy" featuring Adam Sandler in the lead role.

Crow won a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 2000 for the song beating Tori Amos, Melissa Etheridge, Sarah McLachlan and Ani DiFranco, who were the other nominees in this category.

"Sweet Child o' Mine" was Guns 'n' Roses first US number one and was the third single from their ground-breaking "Appetite for Destruction" album.
7. Limp Bizkit aroused the ire of many fans of The Who, in November 2003, when they released a cover version of which classic?

Answer: Behind Blue Eyes

Limp Bizkit haven't limited their cover versions to classic rock - they have also produced cover versions of George Michael's "Faith" and Prince's "1999".

The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes" has been the subject of many cover versions, including Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega. It featured in the hit television show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" when Anthony Stuart Head, as the character Rupert Giles, performed a version accompanied by guitar in an episode entitled "Where the Wild Things Are".

"Baba O'Riley" is another classic from The Who, and features on televisions "CSI: NY" as part of the opening credits; originally, "Behind Blue Eyes" was chosen. The Limp Bizkit cover version was critically savaged, although the video accompanying the songs release was well received.
8. In 2011 a video of Miley Cyrus performing a particular cover version at a live show in Ecuador spread like wildfire across the internet. Which 'grunge' band originally recorded "Smells Like Teen Spirit"?

Answer: Nirvana

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the first single from Nirvana's "Nevermind" album. Although other grunge artists had had some commercial success, many credit the success of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as a catalyst for the success of the grunge scene. Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Mudhoney were all members of the scene and despite the release of "Ten", Pearl Jam's debut album, coming a month before "Nevermind" it would take almost a year before they saw significant sales.

"Rolling Stone" magazine readers voted this particular cover by Miley Cyrus as the worst of all time, but she is not the only artist to have performed this song in a live cover; Take That, Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake have all done it. Tori Amos even released a cover as a B-side in 1992.
9. In 1996, Radiohead released their ninth single, "Street Spirit (Fade Out)". Which English singer, known for both his solo work and as the original vocalist for Genesis, recorded a cover version of this song in 2009?

Answer: Peter Gabriel

"Street Spirit (Fade Out)" appeared on Radiohead's second studio album, the critically acclaimed "The Bends" which was released in 1995. The song was the band's first hit in the UK top five. Thom Yorke, lead singer of Radiohead, apparently wrote the song after being inspired by the Ben Okri novel, "The Famished Road".

Roger Waters is a member of Pink Floyd, and Phil Collins took over as the lead singer of Genesis after Peter Gabriel's departure.
10. The cover version which surpasses the original can be a rare thing in music. One such song is "Hallelujah", originally written by Leonard Cohen. Which artist had posthumous success in 2008, with his cover version, when the song appeared on reality television shows in both the USA and the UK?

Answer: Jeff Buckley

Jeff Buckley died tragically at age 30 in 1997 in a drowning accident. His cover version of "Hallelujah" appeared on his 1994 "Grace" album. Buckley's version, often considered as the definitive performance of the song, is actually based on John Cale's recording which appeared on a Leonard Cohen tribute album entitled "I'm Your Fan" in 1991.

In 2008, when Jason Castro performed "Hallelujah" on "American Idol", Jeff Buckley's version topped the Billboard charts. Later that same year, Alexandra Burke, as the winner of the UK television show "The X-Factor", released "Hallelujah" as the winning single.

This led to an internet campaign to push Buckley's version to number one in the UK. Many fans of the song were unhappy with the very commercial arrangement of the song and as a result of this campaign, Buckley's version took the number two spot. The commercial might of "The X-Factor" could not be beaten though - Alexandra Burke's version captured the Christmas number one position in the end.

Rufus Wainwright, k.d. lang and Bono have all performed cover versions of "Hallelujah".
