Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Formed as a doo-wop act in 1955 called The Domingo's, the group became The Spinners in 1957. Where did the name of the band come from?

Answer: The large hubcaps found on Cadillac's

I found this bit of information on the sleeve of the UK release of "The Best Of The Detroit Spinners". I must admit I was not aware that the hubcaps on Cadillac's of that time were known as Spinners! Perhaps it's just an American thing.
2. Why were the group known as The Detroit Spinners in the UK?

Answer: To avoid confusion with a UK folk group called The Spinners

My copy of The Detroit Spinners "Wake Up Susan" is credited to just The Spinners, so it seems some import copies of their records did appear in the UK. The UK Spinners were a well known folk group from Liverpool, England. They specialized in catchy, commercial cover versions of old folk standards such as "Dirty Old Town" and "The Leaving Of Liverpool".

Although they had some success with live concerts and albums, they never actually had a British hit single. I'm sorry, but I made all the other answers up!
3. After two smaller hits in America, the (Detroit) Spinners made the top 20 in both the US and UK with "It's A Shame". Which Tamla Motown artist co-wrote this song?

Answer: Stevie Wonder

As the group were with Tamla Motown at this time, "It's A Shame" was credited to the Motown Spinners in the UK. As well as co-writing the song with Lee Garrett and wife and singer Syreeta Wright, "It's A Shame" was also produced by Stevie Wonder.
4. In 1971, vocalist Phillipe Wynne joined the (Detroit) Spinners and the band left Tamla Motown for Atlantic Records. Their first single for Atlantic became the group's first million seller in America. What was it's title?

Answer: I'll Be Around

The (Detroit) Spinners were introduced to the Atlantic label by Aretha Franklin, who was a fan of theirs. Possibly the best remembered of the Spinners singers, Phillipe Wynne performed with the group until 1977. After recording as a solo artist and featuring on some tracks by Parliament, he sadly died of a heart attack on stage in 1984. "That's What Girls Are For" was actually the Spinners first ever single, whilst "I'm Doing Fine Now" and "Feel The Need In Me" were 70s hits for New York City and the Detroit Emeralds.
5. A UK number 29 hit, "Then Came You" became the first (Detroit) Spinners song to top the American charts in 1974. Which female artist joined them on this track?

Answer: Dionne Warwick

The Spinners had a spell supporting Dionne Warwick in concert, and it was famous producer Thom Bell who suggested they record together. Despite the success of "Then Came You" they never collaborated again.
6. Who did the (Detroit) Spinners tell to "Wake Up" in 1977?

Answer: Susan

The Spinners must have liked the name Susan. She also appeared on the song "Lazy Susan", which was a track on an EP released in the UK in 1977. "Wake Up Susan" reached number 29 in the UK.
7. What kind of man was mentioned in the title of the (Detroit) Spinners 1976 hit?

Answer: Rubberband

"Rubberband Man" was a number 2 hit in America, and a number 16 hit in the UK charts.
8. Which (Detroit) Spinners song starts with the lyrics "When I was seventeen, I ran away from home, and from everything I had ever known"?

Answer: Ghetto Child

Like many of the Spinners songs, "Ghetto Child" was written by Thom Bell and Linda Creed. It reached number 29 in America, but scored higher at number 7 in the UK.
9. In 1980, the (Detroit) Spinners claimed their first UK number one with "Working My Way Back To You". Who had the original hit with this song in 1966?

Answer: Four Seasons

"Working My Way Back To You" was a medley with the Michael Zagar written "Forgive Me Girl". It was a number 2 hit in America, earning the Spinners a gold record. My Four Seasons loving friend does not appreciate the fact that I think the Spinners version is superior!
10. The (Detroit) Spinners scored another hit in 1980 with a cover of which old Sam Cooke song?

Answer: Cupid

Along side vocal groups such as The Stylistics and The Delfonics, the (Detroit) Spinners place in pop and soul history is much deserved. Everyone knows at least one Spinners song!
