Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start at the beginning. Which of these songs from Great Big Sea's first self-titled album are you most likely to hear them sing today?

Answer: Excursion Around the Bay

According to their liner notes, "Excursion Around the Bay" is a traditional song that Darrell learned from his cousin. You may even be lucky enough to hear them sing it at one of their concerts!
2. "Lukey" is a hit song from GBS's second CD, "Up". This song is most commonly known in Newfoundland as what?

Answer: Lukey's Boat

According to GBS, it's from the 'ironic detachment' school of local songs.
3. The Bonus Track on "Play" has a line from one of GBS's other songs. Which one?

Answer: Donkey Riding

At about the 1 minute and 15 second mark Sean clearly says "Way hey and way we go", right out of "Donkey Riding". This Bonus Track is 2 minutes of pure GBS energy. It's awesome!
4. On "Turn", we hear GBS sing in French. How does the song's title translate into English?

Answer: Three Wheat Ships

"Trois Navires de Blé" is a traditional song that came to their attention through a fellow St. John's signer. According to their album, it describes a dialogue between some sailors and three sisters on a beach. The sailors wish to sell them wheat and win their hands, but the girls are too smart and the boys fail.
5. Now for a tough one about their newest album, "Sea of No Cares". Which track is only accredited to Alan Doyle?

Answer: Stumbling In

"Stumbling In" was written by Alan Doyle and preformed by GBS. There was also a music video made for this song, starring not only the members of GBS but also the goldfish from their album jacket!
6. GBS's 1997 album, "Play", includes a very moving song. "Recruiting Sergeant" describes the losses suffered in Newfoundland during which war?

Answer: WWI

This song, adapted from a traditional song, was written and sung by Bob Hallett. It tells the tragic story of the losses suffered by many towns in Newfoundland during the war. In many towns, nearly every man signed up to fight in the war and as a result, they lost a great portion of their population.

Many people know about the battles at Flanders, but fewer people know that the Newfoundland Regiment landed at Suvla Bay on the Gallipoli peninsula on September 19, 1915.
7. In which city was GBS's "Sea of No Cares" TV special taped?

Answer: Ottawa

GBS filmed their TV special at the Civic Center in Ottawa in September 2001. I had to include this question because I was there, and I have to say it was a concert I will never forget!
8. Which of the following cities is a GBS member NOT from?

Answer: Deer Lake

Alan is from Petty Harbour, Sean is from Carbonear, and Bob is from St. John's.
9. All the original members of GBS graduated from the Memorial University or Newfoundland.

Answer: True

Alan graduated with a BA in 1992, Sean with a BA in 1989, Darrell with a BA in 1991 and a B.Ed in 1993, and Bob with a BA in 1990.
10. Which GBS member left in 2003 to spend more time with his family?

Answer: Darrell Power

Darrell left the band to spend more time closer to home.
