Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which band called it quits after the death of their drummer, John Bonham, in 1980?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

John "Bonzo" Bonham had worked with vocalist Robert Plant in Crawling King Snakes and when Jimmy Page was putting together a band following the demise of the Yardbirds, he chose Plant as vocalist who in turn recommended Bonham.
With the addition of John Paul Jones on bass, Led Zeppelin was born and they released their debut album in 1969, followed by seven more albums over the next decade, before Bonham's death, caused by pulmonary aspiration in 1980.
Following his death, the rest of the band released a statement which read, "We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were."
Led Zeppelin released a final album entitled "Coda" in 1982, which consisted of out takes from various recording sessions, including a drum solo from Bonham entitled "Bonzo's Montreux".
2. Joy Division vocalist Ian Curtis committed suicide in 1980. What was the name of the second and final Joy Division album, released two months after his death?

Answer: Closer

Joy Division were around for just four short years between 1976 and 1980 and released just one studio album, 1979s "Unknown Pleasures", before the death of Curtis aged just 23, but they also left us one of the most recognisable tracks of the 80s in "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (1980), released a month after his death.
The remaining members of the band reformed as New Order in 1981 with the addition of keyboard player Gillian Gilbert and Bernard Sumner taking over vocal duties.
3. In 1977, the singer, songwriter and guitarist from T. Rex died in a car crash, ending the band. What was the name of this glam rock hero?

Answer: Marc Bolan

Between 1970 and 1973, T. Rex had ten consecutive top ten singles in UK, and along the way were a major influence on artists such as the Ramones, Sparks, Kate Bush and the Ziggy Stardust period of David Bowie's career.
Although their popularity had waned slightly by the late 70s, they were still charting regularly and Bolan was hosting a music show on UK TV, entitled "Marc" (1977), but all that changed when the car driven by Bolan's girlfriend, Gloria Jones, hit a fence post and a tree on 16th September 1977.
Jones suffered a broken arm and broken jaw, but Bolan was killed instantly, aged just 29, and as the only constant member of T. Rex, as well as the group's songwriter, the band died with him.
4. Which giants of Canadian music called it a day following the death of their vocalist of over 30 years, in 2017?

Answer: The Tragically Hip

Almost unheard of outside Canada, The Tragically Hip dominated the music scene of the "Great White North" from their first chart success, "Blow At High Dough" in 1989. They had their first Canadian top ten hit in 1994, with "Greasy Jungle", and their first number one in 1996 when "Ahead By A Century" hit the top. Every "Hip" album, whether studio, live or box set went top ten in Canada and sell out tours across the country were the norm, culminating in their 2016 tour following the announcement of vocalist Gord Downie's brain cancer diagnosis.

The final show in this tour, at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in the band's hometown of Kingston, Ontario, was broadcast live on CBC TV, and just ten months later, Downie died of the disease.
5. In 2015, following the death of Ian Kilminster, the surviving members of Motorhead announced the retirement of the band. By what name was Kilminster better known?

Answer: Lemmy

Lemmy first gained recognition as a member of Hawkwind, before being asked to leave the band and forming Motorhead in 1975.
After several personnel changes, the band had their golden period in the late 1970s and early 1980s when, with Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor on drums and "Fast" Eddie Clarke on guitar they achieved UK chart success with tracks such as "Iron Fist" (1982), "Ace Of Spades" (1980) and their signature song, "Motorhead" (1981), the live version of which was a UK top ten hit.
Although success came and went and came again, the band retained a fiercely loyal following through the years and personnel changes right up to the point where Lemmy died of cancer in 2015, just four days after his 70th birthday.
Fellow band members Phil "Wizzo" Campbell and Mikkey Dee released a statement asking fans to "have a drink or few" and "play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy's music LOUD", followed by a statement the following day confirming, that without Lemmy, there was no Motorhead.
6. Andrew Wood died in 1990, following a heroin overdose, meaning his band's only studio album was released posthumously. What was the name of the band for which Wood was vocalist?

Answer: Mother Love Bone

Wood died just days before the scheduled release of "Apple" (1990), the debut album for Mother Love Bone, a band now recognised as being highly influential on both the grunge and alternative metal scenes.
Following Wood's death, his friend Chris Cornell put together the band Temple Of The Dog, along with Mother Love Bone guitarist Stone Gossard and bass player Jeff Ament, to record a self titled tribute album to Wood. Following the success of this project, Gossard and Ament recruited part time gas station employee Eddie Vedder as vocalist to create Pearl Jam.
7. After what seemed like a tour that lasted 30 years, Jerry Garcia died of a heart attack in 1995, bringing down the curtain on which seminal band?

Answer: The Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead always valued doing what they loved over chart success and their eclectic mix of musical genres gained them a huge and devoted fan following.
Thousands of sold out live shows cemented the band's reputation and their place in the music history books, and while a surprise Billboard Hot 100 top ten hit in 1987s "Touch Of Grey" brought commercial success, it was playing for the fans that the Grateful Dead valued.
They were formed in 1965 by Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann and other than the departure of "Pigpen" in 1972, this was the core of the band's line-up for the next 30 tears, until the death of Garcia in 1995 following a heart attack.
The surviving members of the Grateful Dead have toured as The Other Ones (with Bruce Hornsby), The Dead (with Warren Haynes) and since 2015, as Dead & Company, with John Mayer, but the Grateful Dead are no more, following Garcia's untimely passing.
8. In 2014, it was confirmed that following the death of MCA in 2012, Mike D and Ad-Rock would not record new music under the band name that the three had shared since 1981. What was this band name?

Answer: Beastie Boys

Formed in 1978 in New York City, punk band, Beastie Boys made the switch to hip hop after some minor success with their track, "Cooky Puss" in 1983 and took the genre into living rooms throughout the world with tracks such as "She's On It" (1985), "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" (1987) and "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" (1987).
Although mainstream chart success dried up somewhat in the 90s, specialist chart hits, such as on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop chart in USA, continued to come right up until the 2010s, and probably would have continued had Adam "MCA" Yauch not died of cancer in 2012.
In 2014, Michael "Mike D" Diamond confirmed that although himself and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz may make music together in the future, it would not be under the Beastie Boys name.
9. The second and final album from supergroup, "Traveling Wilburys", titled "Vol. 3" was released in 1990, dedicated to late member Roy Orbison. What was Orbison's Wilbury pseudonym?

Answer: Lefty Wilbury

Traveling Wilburys were originally made up of Bob Dylan (Lucky Wilbury), George Harrison (Nelson Wilbury), Jeff Lynne (Otis Wilbury), Tom Petty (Charlie T. Wilbury Jr.) and Orbison (Lefty Wilbury) and their debut album in 1988 was a top ten hit in charts all over the world.
Less than two months after its release, Orbison died of a heart attack, and in a poignant moment, the band shot the video for their single "End Of The Line" (1989) featuring a guitar rocking in a chair whenever Orbison's vocals are heard.
The remaining Wilbury's adopted new names and reconvened for one final album in tribute to their departed member and although there were discussions about further projects and tours, the deaths of Harrison in 2001 and Petty in 2017 means that "Vol. 3" (1990) was the last output from the band.
10. In 1994, Kurt Cobain took his own life, ending the career of one of the most influential bands of the 90s. Which band was that?

Answer: Nirvana

Formed in 1987, in the seven years before Cobain's death, Nirvana became one of the most influential bands of a generation, spearheading alternative music into the mainstream.
In just three albums, "Bleach" (1989), "Nevermind" (1991) and "In Utero" (1993) they changed the face of music, ending the reign of "hair metal" bands such as Hanoi Rocks and Poison while providing a path for artists such as Weezer, Arcade Fire and Fall Out Boy among others, before Cobain, suffering with drug addiction and depression, took his own life.
Following his death, fellow Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Pat Smear formed the Foo Fighters, while bass player Krist Novoselic is involved in political activism as well as performing with the band, Giants in the Trees.
