quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who sings the song "1492" on their 2008 album "Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings"?

Answer: Counting Crows

"1492" was originally supposed to be part of the Counting Crows's previous album, "Hard Candy" (2002).

While not the first commercial single for the album, "1492" was available as a digital download preceding the release of "Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings".
2. Which "Weird Al" Yankovic parody song contains the lyric "Then tonight we're gonna party like it's 1699"?

Answer: Amish Paradise

"Amish Paradise" (1996) parodies the song "Gangsta's Paradise" (1995) by Coolio featuring L.V.

Although Yankovic normally gets permission from the original artists for his parodies, Coolio denies giving permission for a parody because of the serious nature of "Gangsta's Paradise". Yankovic's record company (Scotti Bros.) maintains that they secured permission from Coolio's record company (Tommy Boy/Warner Bros. Records). Coolio's song was a reworking of Stevie Wonder's "Pasttime Paradise" from the album "Songs in the Key of Life" - Coolio used the same tune and a different orchestration of the original backing music.
3. Who sings the song "You Keep It All In" (1989), which refers to "that robbery in '62" and "the murder in '73"?

Answer: The Beautiful South

"You Keep It All In" is from the 1989 album "Welcome to the Beautiful South".

Some people have suggested that the robbery is referring to the great train robbery in England, however that actually happened in 1963, and the "murder of '73" supposedly refers to the murder of Lord Lucan's nanny, however this occurred in 1974 and not '73. "The Beautiful South" is an English alternative rock group, and these events grabbed headlines in the UK.
4. When staying at the "Hotel California," when you ask for your favorite wine, you will find out that they "haven't had that spirit here since" what year?

Answer: 1969

"Hotel California" is the title track of the 1976 album by the Eagles.

Despite rumors and urban legends, the song is not about a specific hotel, insane asylum, or satanism, but is a socio-political commentary about America in general and the California music industry in specific.

Even though wine is a fermented alcoholic beverage and not a distilled spirit, "we haven't had that spirit here since 1969" isn't a literal statement about a drink but is a metaphor, just like the rest of the song.
5. Who sings the song "AM Radio" (2000), which mentions 1970, 1972, 1975, and 1977 in the lyrics?

Answer: Everclear

The song is about singer/songwriter "Art" Alexakis's memories of listening to AM radio while growing up in the 1970s. The song is on the album "Songs from an American Movie, Vol. 1: Learning How to Smile" (2000).

In 2006, the song was used by General Motors in a television commercial.
6. Which Smashing Pumpkins song won the 1996 MTV Video Music Award for Best Alternative Video?

Answer: 1979

"1979", from 1996's "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" was nominated for but did not win the 1997 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

The video for "1979" was actually filmed twice. After completing the video, the original tapes were left on the top of a car and lost and all the footage was re-filmed.
7. Paul McCartney & Wings and Bowling For Soup each recorded different songs with the same year-based title. What is the title?

Answer: 1985

"Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five" was last track of Wings' album "Band on the Run" (released in 1973 and looking into the future). In 2004, Bowling For Soup had a hit with "1985", about a woman living in the past.
8. In 1969, what song from Zager and Evans reached the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100?

Answer: In the Year 2525

"In the Year 2525 (Exordium and Terminus)" refers to many future years in the lyrics, beginning with 2525 and continuing through 9595.

Although this song was a number one hit for Zager and Evans, they never had another single on the charts.

The song has been covered numerous times, and has appeared in science-fiction television shows and movies, such as "Cleopatra 2525" (2000-2001) and "Alien 3" (1992).
9. On their 2008 album, "Funplex", The B-52s sing what futuristic song?

Answer: Love in the Year 3000

The B-52s used to be known as The B-52's, but officially dropped the apostrophe with the release of "Funplex" in 2008.

The B-52s started in 1976 with Cindy Wilson, her brother Ricky Wilson, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, and Fred Schneider. Ricky Wilson died in 1985, supposedly from cancer, but the cause of death was later revealed to be complications from AIDS.
10. On their debut studio album, "It's About Time" (2006), the Jonas Brothers covered which 2003 song from the British boy band Busted?

Answer: Year 3000

On "It's About Time" (2006), the Jonas Brothers covered two Busted songs, "Year 3000" (2003) and "What I go to School For" (2002), though the lyrics of both songs were slightly rewritten to be more family friendly.

The Jonas Brothers' debut album "It's About Time" (2006) was released by Columbia records. When they were dropped by Columbia and moved to Hollywood Records to release their second album ("Jonas Brothers", 2007), "Year 3000" was the only title that Hollywood got the distribution rights for, and the song appeared on their second album as well.
