Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A Czech burglar got more than he bargained for when he cut through a steel cable in an elevator shaft at an unused grainery. What happened to him?

Answer: Once the cable was severed, the elevator's counterbalance was released to crush the burglar.

It must have seemed like a good idea as the burglar approached the grainery near Zatec about 40 miles from Prague. There was plenty of good quality steel cable capable of being sold on at a high price. Unfortunately for him, the counterbalance moved virtually silently as it accelerated downwards.

2. In 1871, Clement Vallandigham was defending a client in a murder trial. The defence assertion was that the deceased's method of drawing a gun had led to his shooting himself. Vallandigham duly re-enacted the scene ... and shot himself.

Answer: True

Vallandigham had an initially successful career in politics serving on the Ohio legislature and enjoying two terms in the House of Representatives. After an anti-war stance led to his failure to secure a third term on Capitol Hill, he denounced Abraham Lincoln in 1863 calling for his removal from the presidency.

At the time of his death in 1871, he was representing Thomas McGehan, accused of killing Tom Myers in a barroom brawl. The victim had attempted to draw a gun from his pocket whilst rising from a kneeling position. In Vallandigham's defence, he had not realised that he was using a loaded gun.

McGehan was acquitted.

3. Fr. Adelir Antonio de Carli perished whilst attempting the world record for clustered balloon flight. He used a buoyant chair, wore a protective suit and carried a mobile phone and a GPS. Out at sea, however, it became clear that he had made one fatal miscalculation. What was it?

Answer: He did not know how to work his GPS.

The flight was partially in homage to Lawrence Walters (aka Lawn Chair Larry) who, in 1982, drifted to a height of 16,000 feet and into air traffic lanes courtesy of 45 helium-filled weather balloons attached to his patio chair.

Fr. Carli, who was an experienced sky diver, used 1000 helium balloons and ascended to over 19,500 feet before tragedy struck. He was able to contact the outside world but could not give his location due to lack of training in the use of his GPS.

4. Bulgarian biology teacher Lidia decided to dispose of some unneeded chemicals by pouring them into the local sewer. In this enclosed space the substances combined and exploded with such force that Lidia was decapitated by the flying manhole cover.

Answer: True

It isn't entirely clear which substances Lidia poured down the drain in Sofia but they definitely included diethyl ether and methanol which are both highly flammable substances. Her two companions were also hurt although not fatally.

5. How did a dog, a deer's leg bone and a loaded shotgun cause a fatal accident amongst a party of hunters?

Answer: The dog's owner used the butt as a club to 'persuade' the dog to drop the bone. The butt hit the ground. The gun went off shooting the owner.

The accident occured as the group of bird hunters were taking a smoking break. The dog found the bone and his owner tried to relieve him of it. Thankfully the victim survived long enough to confirm the details to the police. Otherwise, who knows whether they would have believed this bizarre story.

6. In March 2007, farmers Fred and Frank Hare were patrolling their land with shotguns hunting for badgers. Sighting one, they took aim from opposite directions each unaware of the other's presence. Two shots later both lay dead whilst Mr Badger strolled away unharmed.

Answer: False

Badgers are believed to be a real threat to British herds as carriers of tuberculosis but thankfully our two farmers are no threat to anyone due to their non-existence.
7. In what bizarre way did a Croatian man die in 2005?

Answer: He tried welding a live grenade.

The 55 year-old Croatian chimney sweep was trying to solve the problem of how to sweep a chimney longer than his broom. He decided that a simple extension could be gained by attaching a chain and small heavy object. His one mistake was in thinking that a live grenade should be that small heavy object.

The chimney survived.

8. In 2006, Scuba loving Scot Crissee MacLeod, husband Mel and daughter Polly (5) were in South Africa swimming with dolphins. Even the dolphins retreated at the sight of a blue whale but not Crissee. Cue Mel : "She went close up but too far." Gone in a cloud of plankton.

Answer: False

Blue whales are the largest of all mammals but this is stretching credulity just a bit far, even for a Darwin Award nomination.
9. Young Scot Anne Trivi was feeling less than bonny when sister Anna stole her boyfriend. In revenge, Anne poisoned a drink intended for Anna but due to a typographical error at the bar, the drink was delivered to the wrong table. Only Anna survived to see the funny side of it.

Answer: False

I so wanted this one to be true. It would have made a great movie.
10. How was a Pennsylvania man electrocuted by his workplace electrical test equipment?

Answer: He attached it to two of his chest piercings.

The 23 year-old who had various body piercings was curious to see what would happen and ignored the warnings of his colleagues.

I don't have any chest piercings but, if I did, I wouldn't let them anywhere near a pair of alligator clips and an electricity supply. Whatever they say about curiosity and cats should apply doubly to humans. And would the chain gang option have produced sufficient bright sparks?
