2. Violent Russian conman, Michael Ostrog, visited Torquay in England during 1864 to 'ply his trade', but 24 years later whilst living in London he was identified as a suspect in the case of which notorious killer?

Answer: Jack the Ripper

'Jack the Ripper', who gained his gruesome sobriquet from a letter sent to the Metropolitan Police, was responsible for the horrific deaths of at least five women in the Whitechapel area of London during 1888. He was never caught, but at the time the city was rife with rumours as to who 'Jack' might have been; some said that he may have been a doctor due to the fact that the corpses displayed evidence that the perpetrator had some medical knowledge.

Some thought that he may have had a royal connection; others believed that he may have been a person of Jewish faith with an axe to grind. Ostrog, who manifested traits of mental illness, was supposedly in prison in France whilst the Ripper murders were taking place.

In addition, he bore little, if any, resemblance to the Ripper according to the evidence of some 'eye witnesses'.

6. Which hard-driving, tough-as-nails U.S. World War II commander was able to 'get in touch with his feminine side' by designing a full and very flashy wardrobe ensemble for his troops?

Answer: General George S. Patton, Jr.

Patton's design for a new uniform for the troops serving in the United States Tank Corps included a long-sleeved jacket with polished brass buttons on the shoulder pads and down the right side, matching pants, and topped off by a golden football helmet.

A photograph of Patton modeling his uniform also shows the outfit 'accessorized' with a pistol (probably his famous ivory-handled Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum) and a shoulder holster. For reasons not absolutely clear (at least to this author), the Army turned down the general's proposal.

7. Threat to the crown? Political enemy? Disgraced general? Servant with a secret and a big mouth? Voltaire, Dumas, DiCaprio, Chamberlain - What is this famous and mysterious prisoner generally called?

Answer: The Man in the Iron Mask

Made famous by Alexander Dumas' novel 'The Man in the Iron Mask', many historians believe this prisoner to have been an actual historical figure.
The story has been immortalized in literature, music, films and television over the past several hundred years, but the prisoner's identity remains unknown.
Many historians, authors and others have offered up theories over the years, from Louis XIV's twin brother, to a disgraced general, and an insignificant valet, all using the alias Eustace Dauger. Why life imprisonment vs. death? Why obscure his identity unless he was recognizable? Why lead everyone to believe he was a servant, but treat him like royalty? Whatever the truth, it is fascinating reading and it doesn't take long to begin to form your own theory.

9. According to the art historian Kenneth Clarke, who is the "(artist) who has turned self-portraiture into an autobiography."?

Answer: Rembrandt

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was a draughtsman, painter and printer. He is considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art and the most important in Dutch art history. He created approaching one hundred self-portraits including over forty paintings, thirty-one etchings and about seven drawings. By comparison, Peter Paul Rubens, who produced over 1,403 paintings, only included seven self-portraits. Of the wrong answers, Brad Eberhard is a Postwar & Contemporary painter, Jackson Pollock ('Jack the Dripper') was an abstract expressionist and Roy Lichtenstein was an American pop artist. Suffice to say a self-portrait by any of them would not be easily recognisable.
