He was born at 11, Picardy Place, Edinburgh, Scotland on the 22nd May 1859.
2. What did Conan Doyle study at Edinburgh University?

Answer: Medicine

He studied medicine and became a qualified doctor. It was while studying medicine that he met Joseph Bell who could identify a patient's walk to work by the type of gravel that he found on his shoes. Undoubtedly this man left a big impression on a young Arthur.
3. Where was "A Study in Scarlet" first published?

Answer: Beeton's Christmas Annual

It was published in the 1887 "Beeton's Christmas Annual" and was a huge success. This was the first big success for Conan Doyle and he had many more publications to follow.
4. Conan Doyle also played amateur football. Who did he play for whilst living at Southsea?

Answer: Portsmouth Association Football Club

He played as a goalkeeper for Portsmouth Association Football Club. The club is not related to the modern Portsmouth FC.

He had two children, Mary and Kingsley, by his first wife, and three by his second wife, Denis, Adrian and Jean.
6. When did Conan Doyle receive his knighthood?

He believed that it was his pamphlet "The War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct" which led to his knighthood in 1902.

Oscar Slater was accused of murdering an 82 year old woman in Glasgow. However, Conan Doyle believed that Slater was being framed and saw inconsistencies in the police's case against him. Slater was later freed.

He was writing a piece on fairies when the photogrpahs by Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths were brought to his attention. They only confessed that the pictures were a hoax after his death.

Answer: 7th July 1930

He died of a heart attack on 7th July 1930 after being found clutching his chest in his study. He was 71 years old when he died.
10. What event took place at the Royal Albert Hall following his death?

Answer: A seance

A seance was conducted at a packed Albert Hall. A medium apparently contacted him, but as she spoke, the band struck up and drowned her voice out. I wonder what she was saying!
