Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mary, Queen of Scots, and Charles I of England were grandmother and grandson. How did they die?

Answer: Beheaded

Mary was beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle in 1587 on the orders of Elizabeth I. Charles I, was beheaded in 1649. The House of Stuart seems to have been particularly unlucky in this respect.
2. How many children did Charles I and Henrietta Maria have?

Answer: 9

Of these 6 survived to adulthood. This was a better than average proportion in the seventeenth century, due to the high rate of infant mortality. Naturally the Royal family had the best medical care available, sometimes more of a hindrance than help at that time!
3. How many sons did James I and his wife Anne have?

Answer: Three

Of these children, Henry, born 1594, died in 1612. Robert born and died in 1603.
Charles was in born 1600 executed in 1649. Henry had been the great hope, and his early death at eighteen dashed many hopes. While Charles did prove to be a patron of the arts he seems to have lacked Henry's panache.
4. Charles I suffered from what ailment?

Answer: Stammer

Charles I suffered from a stammer as did George VI. At birth Charles was not expected to succeed to the throne. For Charles, being on public display was an ordeal. In those days monarchs were seen dining in public. (Yes, really, people sat and watched).
5. James II was married twice. Whom did he marry?

Answer: Anne Hyde and Mary of Modena

Anne Hyde was daughter of the Earl of Clarendon a staunch royalist. Mary of Modena survived James. Sadly, Anne Hyde died early. In 1673 James' remarried - to Mary of Modena, then aged 15, while he was 40. In the seventeenth century that was considered acceptable and did not cause as much comment as it would today!
6. Whom did Charles II marry?

Answer: Catherine of Braganza

Charles II married the long-suffering Catherine of Braganza. Her dowry included Tangier. However, it proved costly to maintain as a colony and was abandoned in 1684. Charles and Catherine had no children. Each of the other ladies had a child or children by Charles.
7. What, particularly, did Charles II NOT want after the Restoration (1660)?

Answer: be a refugee again

Charles II had fled abroad during the interregnum/Commonwealth period and was invited back to England and the throne in 1660. He was aware that he needed to court public opinion, in a way that his father certainly had not.
8. Charles II apologized to his doctors. Why?

Answer: For taking a long time to die

Charles II was in much pain, and had he not been an important person he would most probably have suffered less, as he would not have had access to physicians. The treatments administered to Charles sound almost like tortures.
9. How many of James II's children became monarchs of England and Scotland?

Answer: two: Mary and Anne

Mary and Anne were James' daughters by his first wife Anne Hyde. His son, by Mary of Modena, never acceded to the British throne. James Francis Edward was born in 1688 and the thoughts of a Catholic succession, on top of James II's avowed Catholicism and repressive policies was too much to bear.
10. Mary, daughter of James II and Anne Hyde married which of these?

Answer: William, Stadholder of the Netherlands

Mary and William were full cousins and he was ten years her senior. George of Denmark married Anne (Mary's sister). The Earl of Shaftesbury was one of the signatories to the invitation of William and Mary in 1688. Titus Oates was an agent provocateur of the reign of Charles II.
