Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these ladies was quoted, in a biography, as saying about her profession, "Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening"?

Answer: Coco Chanel

This quote was attributed to Coco Chanel in a 1991 biography of her, written by Axel Madsen.

One of the most famous fashion designers of the 20th century, Coco was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel in France in 1883. She originally had dreams of becoming a performer, but was able to make a decent living for herself as a seamstress until she embarked on a new lifestyle as a mistress of wealthy men. One of those men, Arthur Capel, financed Coco's start as a designer and purchased shops for her. By the 1920s, Coco was a big success, selling clothing, hats, handbags and her signature Chanel No. 5 perfume.
2. Which of these ladies said in a "60 Minutes" interview, about her and her husband, "You know, I'm not sitting here like some little woman standing by my man, like Tammy Wynette. I'm sitting here because I love him, and I respect him, and I honor what he's been through and what we've been through together. And you know, if that's not enough for people, then heck, don't vote for him."?

Answer: Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton spoke in this "60 Minutes" interview about her and husband Bill's (who also took part in the interview) marriage, but this was actually a few years before the Monica Lewinsky scandal. The interview took place in 1992, while Bill Clinton was campaigning for President of the United States for the first time. Of course Hillary did continue to stand by Bill in the wake of the Monica scandal, for which he was impeached.
3. In 2007, a famous blonde talked to Barbara Walters about turning her life around. She said, "I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute. It is not who I am, nor do I want to be that person for the young girls who looked up to me. I know now that I can make a difference, that I have the power to do that. I have been thinking that I want to do different things when I am out of here." Which of these ladies said this?

Answer: Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton, heiress to the Hilton Hotel empire who dabbled in acting, singing and generally being a media favourite, said this and much more to Barbara Walters via a telephone interview in June 2007. This was shortly after Paris had been sentenced to jail time for drinking and driving; in fact, she was in jail while talking to Walters, and Walters later transcribed the informal interview into an ABC news article.

When asked what she thought she might want to do differently with her life, Paris mentioned that she wanted to help sick children and women with breast cancer.
4. This original "Cosmo" girl who died in 2012 at the age of 90 was known for several catchy sayings, but the one that largely sums up her ideology was, "Don't use men to get what you want in life; get it for yourself". Who said it?

Answer: Helen Gurley Brown

Like many quotes by Gurley Brown, this quote has been widely attributed to her in various forms of media, but without a specific source citing when or where it was said. The full form of this quote has been given as, "So you're single. You can still have sex. You can have a great life. And if you marry, don't just sponge off a man or be the gold-medal-winning mother. Don't use men to get what you want in life; get it for yourself." This sums up in a couple of sentences the main ideas in Helen Gurley Brown's well-known book "Sex and the Single Girl" (1962) and later follow-ups such as 1982's "Having It All".

In addition to writing books, Gurley Brown was the founding editor-in-chief of "Cosmopolitan" magazine, a position that she held for over 30 years.
5. The following quote was actually spoken aloud by Julia Roberts, but was written for her to say on behalf on another lovely lady who was being honoured with a lifetime achievement award in her field. Whose acceptance speech included "I am proud to have been in a business that gives pleasure, creates beauty, and awakens our conscience, arouses compassion, and perhaps most importantly, gives millions a respite from our so violent world"?

Answer: Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn was the 1992 winner of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement award. At the presentation of the award in January 1993, her acceptance speech was read by Julia Roberts on her behalf, due to Hepburn's poor health; Audrey Hepburn passed away very soon after, on January 20 1993, due to inoperable cancer.

She was the star of many classic well-loved films, such as "Roman Holiday" (1953), "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961) and "My Fair Lady" (1964). She was nominated for many, many awards over her long career and won several, including a Best Actress Oscar for "Roman Holiday".

The quote from her speech shows that she loved making movies as much as her fans love watching them.
6. Which politician, the first woman to hold her post in the United States government, said in her memoirs, "I was taught to strive not because there were any guarantees of success but because the act of striving is in itself the only way to keep faith with life."?

Answer: Madeline Albright

Madeline Albright, originally from Czechoslovakia, was the first female Secretary of State, becoming the highest-ranking woman in the history of the US government when she took that office. She held the post from 1997-2001, under the administration of President Bill Clinton. The next two US Presidents also had female Secretaries of State; Condoleeza Rice under George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton under Barack Obama. Before becoming Secretary of State, Albright was the American ambassador to the United Nations, also under Clinton.

The quote in the question comes from Albright's 2003 published memoir, "Madam Secretary".
7. Which of these women said, about herself, in a 1988 interview, "The name was a fluke. A joke... We'd sit backstage and talk about names we'd never give our children, like Pork Pie or Independence. Of course, now people are walking around with those names."?

Answer: Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg, real name Caryn Elaine Johnson, explained in a 1988 interview with "Playboy" magazine how she came to have her stage name Whoopi Goldberg. She said that people she worked with started calling her Whoopi Cushion because she'd make a noise like a whoopee cushion when she was annoyed, and further explained that it was her mother who suggested keeping the name Whoopi but choosing a more traditional last name to go with it.

Whoopi Goldberg is an Oscar-winning (for the 1990 movie "Ghost) actress who has appeared in films such as "Sister Act" (1992), "The Color Purple" (1985) and "Corrina, Corrina" (1994). She also appeared as the centre square on the game show "Hollywood Squares" from 1998 to 2002 and became the moderator on the panel show "The View" in 1997, among many other TV appearances.
8. Which American activist stated in her 1922 book, "A free race cannot be born of slave mothers. A woman enchained cannot choose but give a measure of that bondage to her sons and daughters. No woman can call herself free who does not own and control her body. No woman can call herself free until she can choose consciously whether she will or will not be a mother."?

Answer: Margaret Sanger

Margaret Sanger was a nurse and activist for sex education and birth control. She founded the Planned Parenthood organization over several decades, starting with a small birth control clinic in New York in 1916, for which she was jailed. Though she was an early supporter of women owning and being in charge of their own bodies, she was very anti-abortion. This was part of the reason she was so in favour of contraception; she felt that preventing a pregnancy was far better than terminating after conception.

The quote in the question comes from her 1922 book "Woman and the New Race".
9. Who said, of her small yet huge act in 1955, "People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true. I was not tired physically, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of a working day... No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in."?

Answer: Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks is the African-American woman famous for not giving up her seat on a bus for a white passenger, and got arrested for it. It was a relatively small act of defiance, and was not even the first time such a refusal had been made, but it became a famous moment of the Civil Rights Movement and led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, organized to protest Parks' arrest.

The passage in the question is from the 1992 book "Rosa Parks: My Story".
10. Who said, before being executed in 1943 at the age of 21, "I am, now as before, of the opinion that I did the best that I could do for my nation. I therefore do not regret my conduct and will bear the consequences that result from my conduct."?

Answer: Sophie Scholl

Sophie Scholl was a German youth who became active in an anti-Nazi organization called White Rose in 1942. She was arrested in February 1943 for distributing anti-war leaflets and, along with her brother and a friend, was convicted of treason and sentenced to death.

The quote in the question was Sophie's answer, during an interrogation, when asked if she agreed that what she did was the worst treason against her country and fighting troops and deserved the utmost punishment. She also said, just before being beheaded, "How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause? Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter, if through us thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?"
