Her given name was Elizabeth Short, but she was called Beth by
most who knew her. To her mother she was known as Bette. She was born July 29, 1924.

Answer: January 15, 1947

It was discovered by 25 year old Betty Bersinger and her 3 year old
daughter Anne in a vacant lot on 39th and Norton in Los Angeles. They were out that morning on their way to get a pair of Anne's shoes repaired. At first they believed the body was a discarded store mannequin.

Using the sound photo equipment of the Los Angeles Examiner, with
the help of assistant managing editor Warden Woolard, they wired
the prints to the FBI in Washington.It was the first time fingerprints had ever been transmitted using this type of technology. Dahlia had worked at Camp Cooke near Lampoc Ca. during WWII, which is why her prints were on file with the government.

She was originally from Medford, Massachusetts but moved to
California in hopes of making a career as a movie actress.

Bevo Means of the "Los Angeles Herald-Express" is credited with the first use of the name and was influenced by "The Blue Dahlia" that had been in movie theaters at the time of the murder.

Short's trademark look was said to be jet black hair, black clothes, and red lipstick and nail polish. However, newspapers sensationalized a lot of the coverage of the murder and changed facts to suit their approach. The autopsy stated that Short had brown hair.

She was dropped off here by her friend Robert "Red" Manley because
she said her sister Virginia would be waiting in the lobby there for
her. She waited a few hours, and was last seen leaving there on
January 9th, 6 days before the body was found.

named Jack Anderson Wilson. He is said to have confessed that
his associate Al Morrison killed the Dahlia. But the police suspected
he was using Morrison as a cover. He died in a fire that started in
his hotel room before he could be charged. Some believe he was not
the real killer, anyway.

Between about 1934 and 1938, 13 people were killed in an area
of Cleveland, Ohio known as Kingsbury Run.Most of them were
transients. Most were found murdered in much that same way as the
Dahlia had been found. Eliot Ness worked this case, but even he could
not solve it. In fact the killings stopped abruptly in 1938.
