Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Australian author of "The Female Eunuch", published in 1970.

Answer: Germaine Greer

Greer wasn't afraid of controversy back in 1970, when she wrote this book, which many still consider as the ultimate book regarding feminism, in which she puts forward the case that society itself forces women to assume submissive roles in order to cater to men and their fantasies.

She is a vocal supporter of the "Me Too Movement" and has related her own experience of being raped aged 19 in 1958, but not reporting it as she believed at the time that it was pointless, due to the fact that she had danced with her attacker and had left a party with him voluntarily, which she believed would be seen as tantamount to consent.
2. Astronaut who perished in pre-launch test of Apollo 1 in 1967.

Answer: Gus Grissom

Grissom was the commander of the ill fated Apollo 1, which caught fire while on the launch pad of Cape Kennedy. Grissom, along with fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger B. Chaffee died due to asphyxiation and the cause of the fire has never been fully determined.
3. Commanding officer of the "Dam Busters" in 1943.

Answer: Guy Gibson

Gibson led the bombing raids on the Mohne and Eder dams on the 16th and 17th May 1943 causing huge destruction reaching as far as the Ruhr. When the dams broke and the valley flooded, massive damage was done to railway communications, while entire townships of workers' homes in this industrial heartland were rendered completely uninhabitable, power stations were destroyed, telephone and power lines ripped out and water supplies for the big industries were reduced for over a year, until the dams could be repaired.
4. English author of "Brighton Rock" published in 1938.

Answer: Graham Greene

I remember reading "Brighton Rock" in English classes at school, not when it was published in 1938 I hasten to add, and it is one of those novels that stays with you for many years, with its rebellious adolescent themes, gang battles and murder. I think that we were supposed to recognise the struggles of morality that flow through the book, but the violence which is central to it held us all in its grip.

It is a testament to Greene's writing that the story is just as gripping today and was made into a movie in 2010, starring Sam Riley and Helen Mirren.
5. American murderer who in 1977 became the first person to be executed nationwide in almost 10 years.

Answer: Gary Gilmore

Gilmore was executed by a firing squad in 1977 in Utah, for the murders of Max Jensen and Bennie Bushnell in 1976. He had waived all appeal rights and resisted all efforts made on his behalf to commute the sentence to life imprisonment while demanding the implementation of his death sentence.
6. Played Felicitas von Rhaden in the 1926 movie, "Flesh and the Devil".

Answer: Greta Garbo

"Flesh and the Devil" was the movie that made an international star of Garbo and came very early in her career, just two years after her leading role in the 1924 Swedish film "The Saga of Gösta Berling". In 1930, she made her first "talkie" movie when she played the title character in "Anna Christie", a role for which she she received her first Oscar nomination.

She was nominated three times for an Oscar, but failed to win one until 1954, 15 years after her last movie, she was awarded an honorary award which she declined to collect. Garbo, once hailed as the most beautiful woman in the world, died in New York City in 1990 aged 84.
7. Italian founder of a fashion house in 1921.

Answer: Guccio Gucci

Gucci started his working life as a lift boy at the Savoy Hotel in London, where he became convinced he could make better quality luggage for the rich patrons. He returned to his native Italy and founded the world famous House of Gucci, originally selling leather bags to horsemen before expanding into luxury luggage and handbags in 1938. By 1951, Gucci were an international brand as the company opened their first store in Manhattan, USA. Guccio Gucci died in 1953 at his home in England.
8. Italian astronomer, known as the father of modern science.

Answer: Galileo Galilei

Galilei was something of a 16th century polymath, able to turn his hand (or brain) to astronomy, physics, mathematics and philosophy. He was also quite the inventor, credited with producing telescopes, a compass and a thermometer.
9. English cricketer who scored 456 runs against India at Lords in 1990.

Answer: Graham Gooch

Gooch scored a 333 and a 123 in the test match against India, breaking the record for the most runs scored in a single test match of Australia's Greg Chappell which had stood since 1974. Outside cricket, Gooch was famous for being the celebrity spokesman for Advanced Hair Studio, a company which offered a variety of treatments for those of us with thinning locks.
10. Leader of UK political party, The Respect Party from 2013 to 2016.

Answer: George Galloway

Galloway was a Labour party MP until 2003 when he was expelled from the party for bringing it into disrepute, following his meetings with Saddam Hussein in 1994 and 2002, and his comments that Tony Blair and George W. Bush had lied to British troops, along with his attempts to incite "British troops to defy orders".

He joined Respect-The Unity Coalition, which later changed its name to the Respect Party, in 2004 and succeeded Arshad Ali as party leader in 2013. In the 2015 General Election, Galloway, who had previously won the Bradford West by-election in 2012 with a majority of 10,000, saw his dreams crumble as Labour Party candidate Naz Shah won the seat with a majority of 11,420 votes and the Respect party was dissolved in 2016.
