Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Napoleon Bonaparte is famed for his lack of stature, known affectionately as "le petit caporal". He was recorded to be a mere 5 feet 2 inches. It has since been discovered that he was in fact 5'6.5" not a bad height for Pierre Publique in 19th century France. What might have caused this confusion?

Answer: Recorded height measured in French feet as opposed to imperial

"Le petit caporal" is a term of camaraderie used among soldiers and 'petit' is not meant as literally 'small'.
2. Did the fifth and last Roman Emperor Nero really fiddle while Rome burned?

Answer: No, don't be silly the fiddle wasn't even invented until the 16th century

Some do suggest that he may have sung and played the lyre though!
3. Adolf Hitler's strong animal rights convictions led him to become a vegetarian. Is this true?

Answer: No, he loved sausages, ham and other cured meats

Yes, it's true he loved his meats, that said, in later life he switched to a vegetarian diet, on doctor's advice due to a flatulence problem. One really mustn't get carried away by the enthusiasm of some for portraying the Nazis as early 'Greens'.
4. It has long been rumoured that Mama Cass died by choking on a ham sandwich, surely not?

Answer: No, she died of a heart attack totally not food related

This rumour may have come from the doctor's speculation that she may have been eating as she lay on the bed, but the PM showed no such signs.
5. Joseph Stalin is rumoured to have been a geography teacher before becoming the leader who was known to rule Russia with an iron fist. What do you think?

Answer: No, the only real job he had prior to the role we know him in, was clerk to an astronomer.

Stalin did spend some time studying for the priesthood, despite no real calling. History showed that his talents were more suited to bank robbing, murdering and sociopathic behaviour.
6. What? The birdman of Alcatraz didn't have any birds? That can't be true.

Answer: Yes, he didn't keep one single bird whilst in Alcatraz

It's true, his reputation as Birdman came from his time at another prison, Leavenworth, where he wrote several pieces on bird diseases. He was actually moved to Alcatraz as a punitive measure in the knowledge that he couldn't keep his birds there.
7. Eve caused all those problems in the garden of Eden by eating that apple ... Or did she?

Answer: No, nowhere in the biblical story of Adam and Eve is an apple mentioned.

It isn't that specific, it actually says "the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden" (Genesis 3:3). Why do we all assume it was an apple?
8. "And not a lot of people know that". Commonly attributed to Michael Caine, but did he really say it?

Answer: No

Mike Yarwood said when doing an impression of him. Apparently Mike Yarwood got it wrong when doing one of his shows, and it has just stuck with him. Soem belive that it originated with Peter Sellers.
9. Walt Disney created Mickey Mouse ... didn't he?

Answer: No, Mickey was actually created by someone called Ub Iwerks

Ub was Disney's number one animator. Walt was no great artist!
10. Some say that Shakespeare didn't write the original story of Hamlet ... What do you think?

Answer: The original story of Hamlet is actually an adaptation of an ancient Scandinavian tale.

Ok, it may not be that the original plot was his, but I think we all agree his version was the best.
