Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's the name of an Old Testament book that contains a collection of witty sayings, many of them written by Solomon? (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'PRO'.)

Answer: Proverbs

Proverbs is the correct answer. In the NKJV and the NIV, Proverbs consists of thirty-one chapters with Solomon credited with writing the vast majority of content. However, Agur is credited with writing Chapter 30 and Lemuel Chapter 31.

In both the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Bible, Proverbs appears immediately after Psalms.
2. Fill in the missing word from James 4:6 in the NKJV: "But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: 'God resists the _______, but gives grace to the humble'." (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'PRO'.)

Answer: proud

The missing word from James 4:6 is 'proud'. The quote "God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble", is based on Proverbs 3:34. Meanwhile, 1 Peter 5:5 quotes the line from Proverbs 3:34 and offers advice advice similar to that of James 4:6.

While the wording of James 4:6 is slightly different in the KJV and the NIV, both versions use the word 'proud'. Using the NKJV, the word 'proud' can be found no less than fifty six different times.
3. Fill in the missing word from Ephesians 6:4 in the NKJV: "And you, fathers, do not __________ your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord." (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'PRO'.)

Answer: provoke

The missing word from Ephesians 6:4 in the NKJV is 'provoke'. While the KJV uses the word 'provoke', the NIV tells fathers not to 'exasperate' their children.

Similar advice is offered in Colossians 3:21. The verse in the NKJV states, "Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged."

Both epistles, Ephesians and Colossians, were written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles.
4. Fill in the missing word from Psalm 12:8 in the NKJV: "The wicked______ on every side, when vileness is exalted among the sons of men. (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'PRO'.)

Answer: prowl

The missing word from Psalm 12:8 in the NKJV is 'prowl'. Psalm 12, similar to a number of the Psalms, was written by David. The Psalm consists of only eight verses.

The NIV and the KJV do not use the word 'prowl' in Psalm 12:8. The KJV states, "the wicked walk on every side", while the NIV says the wicked "freely strut about".
5. Fill in the missing word from 1 Chronicles 29:20 in the NKJV: "Then David said to all the assembly, 'Now bless the LORD your God.' So all the assembly blessed the LORD God of their fathers, and bowed their heads and _________ themselves before the LORD and the king." (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'PRO'.)

Answer: prostrated

The missing word from 1 Chronicles 29:20 in the NKJV is 'prostrated'. The verse is part of a passage in which an elderly David tells the people of plans by his son Solomon to build a temple for God in Jerusalem. The chapter goes on to tell of the close of David's reign and the anointing of Solomon as king.

While the NIV tells of worshippers 'prostrating' themselves in 1 Chronicles 29:20, the KJV states, "they bowed down their heads, and worshipped the LORD".
6. Fill in the missing word from Romans 13:14 in the NKJV: "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no __________ for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'PRO'.)

Answer: provision

The missing word from Romans 13:14 in the NKJV is 'provision'. Romans was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. He is credited with writing thirteen books in the New Testament and in the order of appearance, Romans is the first of Paul's books. It appears after Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Acts.

While the KJV also uses the word 'provision' in Romans 13:14, the NIV urges readers to "do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh".
7. Fill in the missing word from Acts 23:34 in the NKJV: "And when the governor had read it, he asked what ___________ he [Paul] was from. And when he understood that he was from Cilicia." (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'PRO'.)

Answer: province

The missing word from Acts 23:34 in the NKJV is 'province'. The verse is part of a passage telling of Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, being on trial. After appearing before Felix, and then Festus, a decision was made to send Paul to Rome to appear before Caesar, Scripture states.

The Book of Acts was written by Luke, a physician and worker in the early church.
8. Fill in the missing word from Matthew 26:53 in the NKJV quoting Jesus: "Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will ________ Me with more than twelve legions of angels?" (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'PRO'.)

Answer: provide

The missing word from Matthew 26:53 in the NKJV is 'provide'. Jesus made the statement to Peter that if He wanted to, He could have called upon more than twelve legions of angles to defend Him. The quote by Jesus was made in the Garden of Gethsemane when a mob, led by Judas Iscariot, came to arrest Him. A few moments before Jesus made the statement about calling on twelve legions of angles, Peter had wielded a sword and cut off the ear of Malchus, a servant of the high priest.

According to various Websites, one legion consisted of 6,000 angels. In other words, Christ could have called upon no less than 72,000 angels to save Himself from being crucified. Despite this fact, Scripture states Christ went to the cross willingly to die for the sins of mankind and three days later He triumphantly arose from the dead.

For the record, the KJV and the NIV don't use the word 'provide' in Matthew 26:53. The NIV, for example, quotes Jesus as saying twelve legions of angels could be put at his 'disposal'.
9. Fill in the missing word from Acts 1:1-3 in the NKJV: "The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible __________, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God." (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'PRO'.)

Answer: proofs

The missing word in Acts 1:1-3 is 'proofs'. The word 'proofs' is also found in the KJV and the NIV.

The Book of Acts was written by Luke, a physician and worker in the early church. The Book of Acts, similar to the Gospel of Luke, was addressed to Theophilus.

The Gospel of Luke provides an in-depth account of Christ's three-year ministry while the Book of Acts offers a history of the early church.
10. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'PRO', which one was a Grecian Jew who was appointed to serve widows, as per Acts 6:5?

Answer: Prochorus

Prochorus is the correct answer. According to Acts 6:5, he was one of seven Grecian Jews appointed to serve widows in the the early church. Others appointed along with Prochorus were Stephen, Philip, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas. Prochorus is mentioned in only Acts 6:5 and no where else in the Christian Bible.

Wikipedia reports that, according to later tradition in some churches, Prochorus was also one of the Seventy Disciples sent out by Jesus in Luke 10.

For the record, the three other names given as incorrect answers do not appear in the Bible.
