Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Elijah, according to Scripture, raised a widow's son from the dead. In what community did the miracle take place? (1 Kings 17:8-24)

Answer: Zarephath

According to 1 Kings 17:8-24, Elijah raised a widow's son from the dead at Zarephath, a town which the LORD instructed Elijah to go to.

Scripture doesn't say how old the boy was, or his name. However, there's a suggestion in 1 Kings 17:19 the boy Elijah revived may have been a toddler as the verse tells of the prophet of God taking the dead boy's body out of his mother's arms.

Scripture goes on to tell of Elijah stretching himself out on the child three times and crying out "O LORD my God, I pray, let this child's soul come back to him." After Elijah cried out to God, the "soul of the child came back to him", Scripture states.

According to 1 Kings 17:9, Zarephath was in the region of Sidon.

Incidentally, no names are given in Scripture for the widow or her son.
2. According to 2 Kings 4:32-35, who did Elisha, a prophet of God, raise from the dead?

Answer: A widow's son

Similar to Elijah, Elisha raised a widow's son from the dead. According to Scripture the miracle took place in Shunem. The Website Christiananswers.net reports Shunem "was a little village in the tribe of Issachar, to the north of Jezreel and south of Mount Gilboa."

In the NKJV Bible, 2 Kings 4:32-35 tells of the miracle: "When Elisha came into the house, there was the child, lying dead on his bed. He went in therefore, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the LORD. And he went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands; and he stretched himself out on the child, and the flesh of the child became warm. He returned and walked back and forth in the house, and again went up and stretched himself out on him; then the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes."

Scripture also tells of Elisha's mentor, Elijah, raising a young boy from the dead in much the same manner.
3. Scripture tells of an unnamed man being brought back to life when his body touched the sacred bones of a prophet of God. What was the name of the prophet of God? (2 Kings 13:20-21)

Answer: Elisha

Elisha is the correct answer. The dead man who came back to life when his body touched the bones of Elisha is not identified. Unfortunately, Scripture is short on details all around when it comes to this amazing story that is told in two verses.

2 Kings 13:20-21, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Elisha died and was buried. Now Moabite raiders used to enter the country every spring. Once, while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man's body into Elisha's tomb. When the body touched Elisha's bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet." No further details are given.

According to Wikipedia, some people believe the dead man was Shallum (son of Tikvah), keeper of the temple-wardrobe in the reign of Josiah and husband of Huldah the prophetess.
4. The account of Jesus miraculously raising Jairus' daughter from the dead is told in three different Gospels. What is the only Gospel that does NOT contain an account of Jairus' daughter being raised from the dead?

Answer: John

The account of Jairus' daughter being raised from the dead is found in three different Gospels -- Matthew 9, Mark 5 and Luke 8 -- but not in John. The Gospel of John concentrates largely on the final days of Christ's ministry and as a result many of the accounts found in the three other Gospels do not appear in John.

The raising of Jairus' daughter from the dead is one of more popular stores in the New Testament. As morbid as it sounds, there was laughter after the little girl's death. In the accounts in Mark as well as Luke 8:49-56, it tells of people weeping for the dead girl outside her home. However, when Jesus appeared and stated the girl was not dead but was simply sleeping, the 'mourners' laughed at him. In other words, they saw Jesus as someone who was demented with no concept of reality. A few moments later, however, their laughter turned to total amazement when Christ raised the girl from the dead.

Mark 5:37-42, in the NKJV, states: "And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. When He came in, He said to them, 'Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.' And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, 'Talitha, cumi,' which is translated, 'Little girl, I say to you, arise.' Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement."
5. The touching story of Jesus raising a widow's son from the dead at Nain is told in only one Gospel of the New Testament. Which Gospel is it?

Answer: Luke

The account of widow's son being raised from the dead at Nain by Jesus is found in Luke 7:11-17 and no where else in Scripture.

According to the Website Christiananswers.net, Nain means "green pastures" and "lovely." The same website reports Nain is about twenty-five miles southwest of Capernaum. This is the only time Nain is mentioned in the Christian Bible.

Luke 7:11-15, in the NKJV Bible, gives this account of the miracle: "Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, 'Do not weep.' Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, 'Young man, I say to you, arise.' So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother."
6. The Gospel of John contains details about Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. According to John 11:39, how many days had Lazarus been dead when he was brought back to life by Jesus?

Answer: 4

According to John 11:39, Lazarus had been dead for four days when Jesus raised him from the dead at Bethany. Scripture states Martha, a sister of Lazarus, was not keen about the stone being rolled away from Lazarus' tomb because of concern about the "stench" from the body. In other words, the funeral was over a long time ago and Lazarus was as dead as they come.

According to Wikipedia, rigor mortis lasts for about seventy-two hours, or three days. In this case, the rigor mortis was over and now the body was starting to decay in the hot Mediterranean sun.

The report of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead is perhaps Christ's most famous miracle. In fact, Scripture states, the Pharisees were infuriated when Jesus performed the miracle and plotted to kill Him, as per John 11:45-56.

According to Verse 48, the Pharisees agreed Christ had to be killed because "if we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation."
7. Who raised the woman known as Tabitha and Dorcas from the dead? (Acts 9:36-42)

Answer: Peter

According to Acts 9:36-42, Tabitha, also known as Dorcas, was raised from the dead by Peter, one of the original Twelve Disciples. She lived in Joppa, a community now known as Jaffa, part of Tel Aviv, on the Mediterranean Sea. Scripture states Tabitha/Dorcas was "always doing good and helping the poor." In different places in the Bible, helping the poor is pointed out as a strong virtue. In Acts 10:2, for example, Cornelius, a Roman centurion who was also a Christian believer, is described as "giving generously" to those in need.

According to Scripture, after Peter raised the woman from the dead the miracle became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. The story of the woman being raised from the dead is only one of several incidents in Acts in which Peter performed miracles. For example, in Acts 9:32-25, just before the report about Tabitha/Dorcas, Scripture tells of Peter healing Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bedridden for eight years.
8. Eutychus, according to Scripture, was raised from the dead by Paul. How did Eutychus die before he was revived by Paul, as per Acts 20:7-12?

Answer: He fell asleep in a window and tumbled to his death while Paul was preaching.

Eutychus fell out of a third story window at Troas, when Paul preached on and on, according to Acts 20:7-12. After Eutychus tumbled out the window, people rushed downstairs and found him dead. According to Scripture, Paul raised the young man from the dead and went back upstairs and ate and did some more preaching.

When Acts 20:7-12 is carefully studied, it's apparent Paul did a lot of preaching that evening in Troas. It's possible he may have spoken for close to ten hours.

Here are some facts to consider. Verse 7 states Paul "continued his message until midnight" with Eutychus falling to his death around that time. Scripture doesn't say when Paul started speaking to the gathering, but reading between the lines, it's apparent his message had gone on for several hours. In verse 9, Luke, the writer of Acts, states in the NIV Paul had talked "on and on."

It's possible he spoke for something like four hours before Eutychus fell out of the window. Scripture then tells of Paul going downstairs and bringing Eutychus back to life and then going back upstairs to break bread and eat. And after eating, Scripture states Paul started preaching again and continued until daylight. So it's possible he spoke for another four or five hours after Eutychus was brought back to life.

It's abundantly apparent Paul was unstoppable in his quest to preach a resurrected Jesus. Considering he possibly preached for something like four hours before Eutychus had his mishap and another five hours after breaking bread and eating, Paul would have spoken for about nine hours. And it's possible his overall address was even longer than nine hours! It's all conjecture, of course. No one knows for certain.
9. When Jesus was crucified, a number of people who had been dead suddenly came back to life in Jerusalem.

Answer: True

True. According to the Gospel of Matthew a number of people came back to life after the death of Jesus. The mindboggling details are found in Matthew 27:51-53.

Here's how the verses read in the NKJV: "Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many."

Details about the crucifixion and the resurrection can be found in all four Gospels. However, Matthew is the only one to contain a report about dead people coming back to life after Jesus died.
10. Jesus Christ, according to Scripture was crucified only to rise triumphantly from His tomb. How old was He at the time of the crucifixion and resurrection?

Answer: 33 years

It is generally believed Jesus Christ was thirty-three years old at the time of His crucifixuiion and resurrection. Luke 3:23 states He was about thirty years old when He started His ministry and most theologians believe Christ's ministry lasted for three years.

The crucifixion of Jesus, followed by his resurrection and His ascension to Heaven is recorded in all four Gospels -- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

When it comes to life after death, Jesus made this great promise in John 11:25 in the NKJV: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live."
