Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Genesis 25:27-28, Isaac favored one son while his wife Rebekah favored another son. Who did Isaac and Rebekah favor?

Answer: Isaac favored Esau, Rebekah favored Jacob

When it came to their twin sons, Isaac and Rebekah were divided. Scripture states Isaac favored Esau, the slightly older twin, while Rebekah favored Jacob.

Although they were twins, the two boys had significant differences. Genesis 25:27-28 states Esau was "a skillful hunter, a man of the field" while Jacob "was a mild man, dwelling in tents."

The favoritism shown by the two parents would have a dramatic impact, with Jacob coming out ahead over Esau as a result of Rebekah's conniving actions.
2. According to 1 Samuel 17:12-14, what king of Israel was the youngest of eight brothers?

Answer: David

1 Samuel 17:12-14 states David was the youngest of eight sons of Jesse, who was "old, advanced in years, in the days of Saul". The names of all the sons are not given, but according to the passage, Jesse's three oldest sons were Eliab, Abinadab and Shammah.

1 Samuel 17 goes on to tell of David, a young shepherd, slaying Goliath, a much feared Philistine behemoth.
3. According to Judges 8:30, what judge of Israel had seventy sons?

Answer: Gideon

Gideon is the correct answer. He must've had a lot of wives to father seventy sons, but no mention is made about the number of wives. There is no mention of the number of daughters he had, as well.

Gideon replaced Deborah as judge of Israel, and he is noted for leading the Israelites to spectacular military victories over the Midianites.

Details about Gideon can be found in Judges 6:11 through to Judges 8:35.
4. Joseph and his wife Asenath had two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. According to Genesis 41:51-52, which one was the younger of the two?

Answer: Ephraim

Ephraim was the youngest son of Joseph and Asenath. Scripture doe not provide details as to the amount of time between the births of Manasseh and Ephraim. However, Genesis 41:50-51 states the two boys were born during a seven year period of plentiful harvests.

According to Genesis 41:52 in the NKJV, Ephraim means "For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction." In the NIV, it states Ephraim means "It is because God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering."
5. What prophet of God named his son Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz?

Answer: Isaiah

According to Scripture, Isaiah was told by God to name his son Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, with details found in Isaiah 8:1-3. The name translates into English as "Speed the Spoil, Hasten the Booty", according to notes in the NKJV Study Bible. (The name appears as Mahershalalhashbaz in the KJV.)

Various Christian websites state the unusually long name is in reference to the Assyrian army staging a surprise attack on Damascus and Syria.

In case you're interested, Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz consists of eighteen letters and three hyphens, making it the longest name in the Bible.
6. According to Ruth 4:14-15, who was told she had a daughter-in-law who treated her better than seven sons could?

Answer: Naomi

According to Scripture, unnamed women told Naomi she was highly fortunate to have a daughter-in-law like Ruth. The statement was made by the women after Ruth had married Boaz and had given birth to a son, Obed. Ruth 4:14-15 in the NKJV states the women told Naomi: "Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a close relative; and may his name be famous in Israel! And may he be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him."

Ruth was originally married to Naomi's son Mahlon. However, Mahlon died, along with his brother Chilion and their father Elimelek, leaving Ruth, Naomi and Orpah as widows. (Orpah had been married to Chilion.)
7. Who told members of the early church the promises of God were for their children as well as themselves? (Acts 2:39)

Answer: Peter

Peter made the statement in an address to a crowd during the day of the Pentecost, as per Acts 2:1-39. To put the verse in context, here's how Acts 2:38-39 reads in the NKJV: "Then Peter said to them, 'Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call'."

Peter was one of the original Twelve Disciples. He is credited with writing 1 Peter and 2 Peter, two epistles in the New Testament.
8. According to 1 Corinthians 14:20, who advised young Christians to stop thinking like children?

Answer: Paul

Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, made the statement in 1 Corinthians 14:20. The verse in the NKJV states, "Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature."

Paul made the statement in a passage in which he provided instructions to the people of Corinth regarding prophesy and speaking in tongues during their services.
9. In what book does Jesus predict that children rebelling against their parents will be a sign of the end times?

Answer: Mark

Mark 13:12 quotes Jesus as saying that children rebelling against their parents will be a sign of the end times. Scripture states Jesus made the statement to Peter, James and John during an extended conversation.

To put the verse in context, here's how Mark 13:11-13 reads in the NKJV:
"But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name's sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved."

A similar statement is made by Jesus in Matthew 10:21.
10. What New Testament book states in the NKJV, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right"?

Answer: Ephesians

The statement is found in Ephesians 6:1. To put the verse in context, here's how Ephesians 6:1-4 reads in the NKJV: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother,' which is the first commandment with promise: 'that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.' And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord."

A similar statement is found in Colossians 3:20, which states, "Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord."

Ephesians and Colossians were both written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles.
