Timothy was a young and timid worker in the early church who often served alongside Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. His mother was Eunice and his grandmother was Lois. According to Acts 16:1, Paul first met up with Timothy in Lystra, a city in present day Turkey.
Titus was a Greek Gentile who often served alongside Paul. He was responsible for establishing a church on the island of Crete. The Epistle of Titus in the New Testament is a letter from Paul providing advice to Titus in leading the church in Crete.
Aquila and Priscilla were a dynamic husband-wife team who spent considerable time serving alongside Paul. In Romans 16:4, Paul states they "risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles."
Silas is perhaps best known for being imprisoned with Paul in Philippi after they were savagely beaten by a mob. Acts 16:16-34 tell of Silas and Paul singing hymns at midnight when an earthquake miraculously struck, setting them free from their chains. Rather than escape, Silas and Paul used the occasion to convert the jailer to Christianity.
Barnabas was a Levite from Cypress. His real name was Joses, but he was given the name Barnabas by people in the early church as he was always encouraging others. According to Acts 4:36, Barnabas means 'Son of Encouragement'.
Luke, in addition to writing two books in the New Testament, was a worker in the early church, often serving alongside Paul. Luke was also a physician. In Colossians 4:14, Paul describes him as "the beloved physician".
Stephen was the first martyr of the early church. In Acts 6:5, he is described as "a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit." Verse 8 goes on to state he did "great wonders and signs among the people." His execution is reported in Acts 7.
Urbanus, in Romans 16:9, is described by Paul as "our fellow worker in Christ."
However, little is known about Urbanus as he is mentioned in only this verse.
Tryphena is mentioned in only Romans 16:12, but it is known she was a worker in the early church. In the verse, Paul states: "Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, who have labored in the Lord."
Meanwhile the names Rhoda, Eutychus, Elizabeth, Herod and Jairus are all incorrect answers.
Rhoda was a servant girl who is mentioned in Act 12:13-15, an account of Peter's miraculous escape from prison.
Eutychus was raised from the dead by Paul at Troas, as per Acts 20:7-12.
Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist while Jairus was the father of a 12-year-old girl Jesus raised from the dead.
It's possible Rhoda, Eutychus, Elizabeth and Jairus served as workers in the early church, but there is no documentation to show such is the case. Bear in mind this quiz is strictly based on information published in the Bible.
Finally, Herod was the name of a series of rulers of Judea. They represented the interests of the Romans and were opposed to the early church.
