Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the Babylonians captured Jerusalem, Daniel was chosen along with a handful of other young men for service in the king's palace, and was taken to Babylon. His captors gave him a new Babylonian name. What was it?

Answer: Belteshazzar

Daniel was renamed Belteshazzar by the Babylonians, and throughout the book of Daniel, kings refer to him by that name. The other three names are the Hebrew names of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were among the young men taken to Babylon with Daniel. This information can be found in Daniel 1:1-7.
2. Upon arrival in Babylon, Daniel refused the king's food, and asked for something else instead. What was it?

Answer: Vegetables and water

Daniel and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego all requested water and vegetables. After ten days, they looked healthier and better fed than any of the young men who were eating the king's food. (Daniel 1:11-16)
3. What did Daniel do for King Nebuchadnezzar that saved all the wise men in Babylon from being executed?

Answer: He told the king what he (the king) had dreamed, and interpreted the dream

King Nebuchadnezzar had a terrible dream, and asked his wise men to tell him what he had dreamed, as well as the meaning of the dream. He threatened to kill all the wise men in his kingdom, including Daniel, because they couldn't interpret the dream. Daniel prayed, and the dream was revealed to him in a vision, along with its interpretation, saving him and the other wise men from death.

This story is found in Daniel 2.
4. Not long afterward, Daniel interpreted a dream of King Nebuchadnezzar's in which he saw a mighty tree cut down and turned into an animal. What was Daniel's interpretation of the dream?

Answer: Nebuchadnezzar would be torn from his position as king and made to act like a wild animal

The dream was fulfilled 12 months later. Nebuchadnezzar was turned into a grass-eating animal until he acknowledged God as "sovereign over the kingdoms of men" (Daniel 4:32). The entire story can be found in Daniel 4.
5. What did King Belshazzar, Nebuchadnezzar's son, see that caused him to summon Daniel to give an interpretation?

Answer: A hand writing strange words on the wall of a banquet room

Daniel interpreted the words "Mene Mene Tekel Parsin" to mean that Belshazzar's reign was at an end because God was not satisfied with him, and that his kingdom would be taken over by the Medes and Persians. This prophecy was fulfilled that very night. Daniel 5.
6. OK, there has to be at least one lions' den question in a quiz about Daniel. Why was Daniel thrown into the lions' den?

Answer: For breaking a law requiring him to pray only to the king

A group of national leaders, jealous of Daniel's position as second-in-command to King Darius, tricked Darius into signing the law. However, when Daniel was condemned to spend the night in a den of lions for praying to God, God sent an angel to shut the lions' mouths.

The scheming leaders were later thrown into the lion's den, and "before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones" (Daniel 6:24, NIV).
7. The last six chapters of Daniel are devoted to dreams and visions that Daniel had. Which of the following did Daniel NOT see in a vision?

Answer: A valley full of dry bones

Ezekiel saw the valley of dry bones (Ezekiel 37). All the rest were seen by Daniel in Daniel 8-10.
8. How many different kings did Daniel serve during his life?

Answer: 3

Daniel served as an advisor or wise man under King Nebuchadnezzar. King Belshazzar called on Daniel to interpret the writing on the wall. And he was one of the three administrators under King Darius. He was living during the reign of King Cyrus of Persia, but the Bible gives no record of his service to that monarch.
9. Daniel mentioned an "abomination that causes desolation" in three of his visions. The "abomination" was also referred to by someone in the New Testament. Who was it who talked about Daniel's prophecy?

Answer: Jesus

In Matthew 24, Jesus taught about the end times, saying, "So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel - let the reader understand - then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains" (verses 15-16, NIV). Daniel referred to this in Daniel 9:27, 11:31, and 12:11.
10. True or false: Near the end of his life, Daniel returned to Israel with a party led by Ezra the scribe, and spent his last years in Jerusalem.

Answer: False

Daniel never returned to Israel. He lived out his days in Babylon, using his wisdom to serve the Babylonian and Persian kings that reigned there.
