Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Naomi was the wife of Ezekiel.

Answer: False

False. She was the wife of Elimelech, as per Ruth 1:2. However, not much is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference. According to the Web site Christiananswers.net, Elimelech means God his king. Elimelech and Ruth and their two sons moved to Moab due to a famine in Bethlehem, according to the first chapter of Ruth. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state Moab was east of the Dead Sea and Moabites descended from Lot as a result of his incestuous relationship with his daughters.
2. Naomi was the mother of two boys, Mahlon and Chilion. (In some versions of the Bible, Chilion is spelled as Kilion.)

Answer: True

True. Naomi was the mother of two boys, Mahlon and Chilion, as per Ruth 1:2. However, not much is known about her two sons as they are mentioned in passing reference. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state Mahlon and Chilion mean 'Sickly' and 'Failing'.

In the NIV Bible, Chilion is spelled Kilion.
3. Naomi's two sons were married to two Moabite women, Ruth and Orpah.

Answer: True

True. Mahlon and Chilion were married to Moabite women. According to 4:10, Ruth was married to Mahlon. As a result, it is safe to state Chilion was married to Orpah.

According to the Web site Christiananswers.net, Ruth means friend while Orpah means forelock or fawn.
4. After Naomi's husband died, she had two grown children who also died.

Answer: True

Yes, Naomi's two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, both died. However, Scripture does not indicate the cause of their deaths. As per information in the answer to Question 2, notes in the NKJV Study Bible state Mahlon and Chilion mean 'Sickly' and 'Failing'. It's likely they died from health issues at a young age.

Their deaths followed the death of Naomi's husband.

After the deaths of the three men, Orpah decided to return to her homeland but Ruth opted to remain with Naomi.
5. Naomi was always cheerful and upbeat, never in the dumps.

Answer: False

False. At one time in her life, Naomi was literally bitter. According to the first chapter of Ruth, Naomi told her friends to call her Mara which literally translates as bitter. She made the request after the deaths of her husband and her two sons. Incidentally, notes in the NKJV Study Bible state Naomi translates as pleasant.

Ruth 1:20-21 tells of Naomi's bitterness: "But she said to them, 'Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?'"
6. Naomi had a rich relative through marriage, called Boaz, who ended up marrying her daughter-in-law.

Answer: True

True. The book of Ruth is largely a romance between Boaz and Ruth. According to Ruth 2:1, Boaz was a man of "great wealth" and was related to her late husband. However, no details are given in Scripture about his wealth or how he was related to Naomi's husband. According to Christiananswers.net, Boaz means
alacrity.
7. Naomi loved the infant Ruth gave birth to so much that people suggested it was Naomi's child, as per Ruth 4:17.

Answer: True

There is no disputing the fact Naomi deeply loved Obed, the son born to Ruth and Boaz.

Ruth 4:16-17, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her bosom, and became a nurse to him. Also the neighbor women gave him a name, saying, 'There is a son born to Naomi.' And they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David."

According to the Web site Christiananswers.net, Obed means serving or worshipping.

With her daughter-in-law giving birth to Obed, Naomi had technically become a grandmother. As one wag suggests, Naomi's actions could very well be the first documented case of a grandmother "spoiling her grandchild rotten."
8. Naomi married a second time.

Answer: False

There is no indication in Scripture that Naomi married a second time. Scripture simply reports about the death of her husband and doesn't report about any new romance in her life.
9. There is a second woman in the Old Testament with the name Naomi.

Answer: False

False. Naomi is the only person in the Old Testament with such a name. In fact, she's the only person in the entire English Bible as there is no other person in the New Testament with such a name.
10. Naomi is mentioned in the New Testament.

Answer: False

Naomi's name does not appear in the New Testament. In fact, the name can be found only in Ruth with the name appearing 20 times.

Incidentally, Ruth's name appears in the genealogy of Christ in the first chapter of Matthew. Two other women mentioned by name in the genealogy are Tamar and Rahab. Bathsheba's name appears indirectly as well. Matthew 1:6 states Jesse was the father of King David and David was the father of Solomon, "whose mother had been Uriah's wife."
