Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God." Of which of the Gospels were these the opening words in the King James version of the Bible?

Answer: John

Other versions have different arrangements of the words. For traditionalists, though, few of the 'newer' versions improved the power of John 1:1.
2. The four Gospel writers all told of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Which was the only one to mention saints rising from the dead after Christ's death?

Answer: Matthew

It occurs in 27:52-53 (KJV):
"And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose.
And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many."

In verse 54, Matthew also mentions an earthquake, the only Gospel writer to do so.
Matthew's Gospel is thought to have been written after AD70.
3. Which of the four Gospels is now generally accepted to be the first written?

Answer: Mark

While some authorities disagree, most are convinced that Mark was the first to be written, probably between AD 60 and AD 70. [Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica.]
Matthew and Luke were composed independently of one another. Many scholars believe both used a written form of the Gospel of Mark, but also had access to other sources.
4. Which of the four Gospel writers is believed to have been a Greek physician?

Answer: Luke

Luke travelled with Paul. Of the four Gospel writers, he recorded more parables than the others. He also wrote the Acts of the Apostles. His audience was mainly the Greeks.
5. Only one of the Gospel tellers recorded the resurrection of Lazarus. Which was it?

Answer: John

John Chapter 11 leads up to the crucial moment and then in verse 43: "And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go." (KJV).

While a lot of Christian teaching suggests that John who wrote this Gospel was "the beloved disciple" of Jesus, that is otherwise disputed. It is thought that it was written in about AD 100.
6. Peter called one of the Gospel writers a "son". Which of them was it?

Answer: Mark

The Gospel of Mark was the first to be written. He was a missionary with Paul and Barnabas. Scholars believe that Mark wrote his Gospel from notes he made of the teachings of the Apostle Peter. Mark paints a picture that Jesus was reluctant to reveal himself as the Messiah. In Mark's Gospel, Jesus refers to himself only as "the Son of Man."
7. Which of the Gospel writers recorded the most miracles by Jesus?

Answer: Matthew

Matthew recorded 29 miracles. (Mark and Luke each recorded 23, and John 10).

In the early history of the Christian Church, it was thought that Matthew was the tax collector and apostle who was also known as "Levi."
8. Three of the Gospel writers were Jews. Which of them was a Gentile?

Answer: Luke

Colossians Chapter four seems to bear this out. Paul names his Jewish co-workers, but Luke is not among those named. Yet Paul says: "Our dear friend Luke, the doctor..."

Luke's writing style gives indications that he was highly educated and he used Greek rather than Hebrew expressions. His Gospel gives a more expansive account of the birth of Jesus than the others.
9. Three of the Gospel tellers recorded the parables told by Jesus. Which did not mention any of them?

Answer: John

While dozens of gospels were written and believed to be accurate by various groups within the early Christian movement only Mark, Matthew, Luke and John were eventually accepted by the early orthodox Christian Church as inspired by God. They are found today in every Bible.

Less than 10 per cent of the writings in John are said to be common to the other three. His Gospel was rejected by many in the early Church, but is now commonly accepted.
10. "Father, into your hands I commend my Spirit" are understood by Christians to be among the final words of Jesus on the Cross at Calvary. Which Gospel writer recounted them?

Answer: Luke

They occur at Luke 23:46.

Both Mark and Matthew give the last words on the Cross as "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?". John's account differs; he gives the final words as "It is finished." [All King James Version.]
