quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For $100, who were the sisters of Lazarus?

Answer: Mary and Martha

See John 11:5, 19. It appears that Jesus had a special friendship with these people, although they were not amongst the 12 disciples. In John Chapter 10 we read of Martha opening her home to Jesus (38-42).
2. For $200, what was the name of Abraham's father?

Answer: Terah

Genesis 11:27. Although we read in Genesis 12:1 that God had called Abraham to leave his country, his people and his father's household and go to the land that God would show him, we know from this passage that he took many of his family with him, including his father.

Nahor and Haran were Abraham's brothers and I hope you recognised that Lot was his nephew (and son of Haran). Lot plays a part in the later story of Abraham, which you can read in the subsequent chapters of Genesis.
3. For $300, what happened to the child that was born as a result of David and Bathsheba's adultery?

Answer: he died after 7 days

2 Samuel 12:15-23. Nathan, the prophet, was sent by God to David to rebuke him for his adultery and for sending Uriah (Bathsheba's husband) to his death. David repented. However, the child died.

It is generally accepted that David wrote Psalm 51, a beautiful psalm of repentance and trust in God, around this time.

David and Bathsheba's second son, Solomon, grew up to be possibly the best and wisest king that Israel ever had.
4. For $500, at what time did Moses say the Lord would slay the first-born in Egypt?

Answer: midnight

Exodus 11:1-10. This was the last of the plagues sent upon Egypt because the Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go.

In Exodus 12 you can read the story of the Passover meal and how the Israelites escaped this judgement by smearing blood on the door frames of their houses.
5. For $1,000, according to Psalm 11, what type of men will see God's face?

Answer: upright

Psalm 11:7. In this psalm, as in several of the psalms written by David, he contrasts the fate of the wicked with that of those who obey God.
6. For $2,000, which of the heroes of faith named in Hebrews 11 'did not experience death, (but) could not be found, because God had taken him away'?

Answer: Enoch

Hebrews 11:5. It is written here that Enoch pleased God and so he was taken by him.

Noah, Abraham and Abel are all mentioned in this chapter, but their deaths are recorded elsewhere in the Bible. Abel is best known as the victim of the first murder in the Bible, having been killed by his brother, Cain. You can find that story in Genesis 4.
7. For $4,000, God refers to the people of Judah as being what type of tree in Jeremiah 11?

Answer: olive

Jeremiah 11:16. God says, that, although they have been a thriving olive tree, because of their disobedience and unwillingness to listen to him, 'with the roar of a mighty storm he will set it on fire, and its branches will be broken'. This is fulfilled, when the people are taken into exile in Babylon.
8. For $8,000, from which city did Paul escape by being lowered in a basket through an opening in the city wall?

Answer: Damascus

2 Corinthians 11:32-33 and Acts 9:23-25. Paul (or Saul) turned overnight from a persecutor of Christians to one of the most powerful preachers of the early church.
9. For $16,000, what is the meaning of the word 'Hosanna', which was shouted by the people when Jesus rode into Jerusalem?

Answer: Save

See Mark 11:1-10. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a colt, an event which is now celebrated by many Christians on Palm Sunday. This passage is understood by most Christians as the fulfilment of the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9. To ride on a colt (or donkey, as some versions say), showed that Jesus came in humility. An important person would have ridden on a horse.
10. For $32,000, Esther also had which Hebrew name?

Answer: Hadassah

Esther 2:7. The book of Esther is unusual, in that God is not mentioned once by name. However, God is clearly at work, using Esther and her uncle Mordecai to save the Jews.

Vashti was the queen whom Esther replaced. Hathach is a minor character in the story and Hammedatha is named as the father of Haman, the man who tried to destroy the Jews.
11. For $64,000, in Luke 11, Jesus says that people ask for a miraculous sign. He says they will be only given the sign of one of the prophets. Which one?

Answer: Jonah

Luke 11:29-32. This is generally understood to be a reference to Jesus' own death and resurrection. Just as Jonah was in the belly of a great fish for three days and three nights (Jonah 1:17), Jesus was in the grave for a similar time before his resurrection.
12. For $125,000, where was John the Baptist when he sent some of his disciples to Jesus with the question: "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?"

Answer: in prison

See Matthew 11:2-3. Although John had baptised Jesus (see Matthew 3:13-17), it seems that later he doubted whether he really was the Messiah.

Jesus here gives the answer that 'the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor'. This is an almost exact quote from Isaiah 61, which foretells the coming of the Messiah and which Jesus quoted when he preached in the synagogue in Nazareth, where he grew up (Luke 4:14-28).
13. For $250,000, which king was hidden in the temple for 6 years, in order to protect him from being murdered?

Answer: Joash

2 Kings 11:1-3. When Ahaziah, Joash's father died, his mother Athaliah set out to destroy the royal family so that she could reign herself. However, Jehosheba, Joash's aunt, hid him so that he would not be murdered and he lived in the temple for 6 years with his nurse.

In the seventh year, Joash was crowned by Jehoiada, the priest, and Athaliah was put to death.
14. For $500,000, from which tribe of Israel does Paul say that he is descended?

Answer: Benjamin

Romans 11:1. In this passage, Paul says that God has not rejected the Jews, but will forgive them if they return to Him.
15. For $1,000,000, in 1 Kings 11, God says he will take 10 of the 12 tribes of Israel out of the hands of Solomon and put them in the hands of Jeroboam. He does this because they have worshipped other gods. According to this passage, which of these is NOT one of the gods the Israelites have worshipped?

Answer: Osiris

1 Kings 11:33. God says that the people have forsaken him and are not following him as David did.

Osiris was one of the gods of the Egyptians. Although the Israelites spent 400 years in Egypt, there is no mention of him in the Bible.
