Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For $100, amongst which animals did the lost son in Luke live, when he ran away from home?

Answer: pigs

Luke 15:15. When his money ran out, he took a job looking after pigs and even ended up eating their food. This would have been particularly abhorrent for a Jew, as they are forbidden to eat pork and other products from a pig; pigs and pigkeeping were an unclean way to spend his time.
2. For $200, where did Jonah flee to instead of going to Nineveh, as God had commanded?

Answer: Tarshish

Jonah 1:2. Tarshish is about as far in the opposite direction as he could go, believed to be in modern-day Spain.

Jonah has been called the prophet of the second chance. As many people know, he was swallowed by a great fish after being thrown overboard during a storm.

When the fish eventually spewed him out onto dry land, he went and preached to the people of Nineveh, as God had told him to.
3. For $300, about whom was it said: "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him."?

Answer: Jesus

Luke 8:24. Jesus calms a storm when he and the disciples are in a boat on the lake. The disciples are amazed that he has power over nature.
4. For $500, when Jesus cast demons out of two men in the region of the Gadarenes, into which animals did they enter?

Answer: pigs

Matthew 8:28-34. The pigs rushed down a steep bank and drowned in the lake. When they heard what had happened, the people of the town were so frightened that they asked Jesus to leave the area.
5. For $1,000, at the end of Job's life, how much wealth did he have in comparison to what he had before his sufferings?

Answer: twice as much

Job 42:7-16. I don't pretend to have an answer to the problem of why good people suffer. However, from my own experience and that of many of my friends, I know that the Lord can use our difficulties to teach us more about himself and ourselves.

It also says in 2 Corinthians 1:4 that God 'comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God'.
6. For $2,000, when he was on the cross, Jesus asked one of his disciples to take care of his mother. Which one?

Answer: John

John 19:25-7. From these verses, it seems that John may have been the only one of the disciples who stayed at the foot of the cross until this point. Several of the women, who are mentioned elsewhere in the gospels as being followers of Jesus, were also present here.
7. For $4,000, which woman of the Bible was told: "who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?"?

Answer: Esther

Esther 4:14. Esther was chosen as the second wife of the Persian king, Xerxes. Because of her royal position, she was able to save the Jews (her own people) from those within Xerxes' court who wanted to destroy them.

I find the stories of Esther and Ruth inspiring. Through their simple obedience, they were able to do great things for God.
8. For $8,000, according to the New International Version of the Bible, what item of Joseph's clothing did Potiphar's wife show to her husband, to prove that he had attacked her?

Answer: cloak

Genesis 39:11-18. It must have been very tempting for Joseph to sleep with his boss's wife. However, he resisted. Although he went to prison as a result of this incident, God later used him in a mighty way to help the Israelites, when he was raised to a position of power in Egypt.

You can read the rest of the story of Joseph in the subsequent chapters of Genesis.
9. For $16,000, how many people were on board Noah's ark?

Answer: 8

Genesis 7:13. Noah and his wife, along with his three sons Ham, Shem and Japheth and their wives, were saved from the flood.
10. For $32,000, who prayed to the Lord that the sun and moon would stand still until Israel defeated its enemies?

Answer: Joshua

Joshua 10:1-15. According to this passage, the sun stayed in the sky for a full day and night without going down. This is seen as proof that God was on the Israelites' side, as it enabled them to defeat their enemies, the Amorites.
11. For $64,000, what was the first thing that Noah did when he and his family left the ark after the flood?

Answer: built an altar to the Lord

Genesis 8:20-22. Noah offered sacrifices to the Lord, thanking him for saving him and his family.
12. For $125,000, why did Jonah not want to preach to the people of Nineveh?

Answer: because he knew they would repent and that God would take pity on them

Jonah 4:2. The king and all of the inhabitants responded to Jonah's preaching and repented. God decided not to destroy them after all.

"Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?" verse 11.

This suggests that the reason for their sin was ignorance, although the Ninevites had a reputation in the Bible as a very cruel people.
13. For $250,000, according to John Chapter 9, why was the man whom Jesus healed born blind?

Answer: so that the work of God might be displayed in his life

John 9:1-12. The disciples thought that his blindness was due to either his sin or his parents'. It is possible that it was caused by an illness his mother had whilst she was pregnant, but we have no way of knowing this.

Jesus said that the reason the man was born blind was so that the work of God might be displayed in his life (verse 3).

The man subsequently got into trouble with the Pharisees, who do not believe that Jesus could have healed him. This man had no theological training or intellectual arguments to defeat the Pharisees. But he was very clear about one thing: that once he was blind, and now he could see (verses 13-34). The Pharisees realised that they could not win an argument with him on that basis.
14. For $500,000, in the New International Version of the Bible, which Old Testament prophet was thrown into a cistern?

Answer: Jeremiah

Jeremiah 38:1-12. Powerful men, who did not like what Jeremiah was preaching, got permission from King Zedekiah to do whatever they liked to him. The king agreed because they convinced him that Jeremiah intended harm, not good, to the people.

However, when the king heard that they had put Jeremiah in a cistern, he ordered him to be released, because he feared that he would starve.
15. For $1,000,000, which of the seven churches in Revelation was rebuked for having forsaken its first love?

Answer: Ephesus

Revelation 2:4. Although the church at Ephesus was praised for their deeds, their hard work and perseverance, it seems that they were perhaps doing this out of duty rather than out of love for God.

Philadelphia and Smyrna are the only two out of the seven which received only praise and no criticism.

Interestingly, Ephesus is the only one of the seven churches mentioned here, to whom Paul wrote a letter that appears in the New Testament. However, there is a reference to a letter to the church in Laodicea in Colossians 4. Paul encourages the Colossians to read his letter to the church at Laodicea and to let them read the one he wrote to them (verse 16). However no copy of Paul's letter to the Laodiceans exists, as far as we know.

As with many passages in Revelation, there are several interpretations concerning the seven churches. Some see them as referring to the churches in Asia Minor (now Turkey) in the time when John was writing. Others see them as descriptions of the Christian church at different times in history.

Congratulations! If you made it this far and you got them all right, you have won a 'virtual' $1,000,000.
