Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scripture states the father of David gave him food to deliver to his other sons who were in battle, just prior to the amazing slaying of Goliath. As per 1 Samuel 17:12, what was the name of David's father?

Answer: Jesse

Jesse was the father of David. According to 1 Samuel 17:17-18, Jesse gave David roasted grain and bread to give to his brothers as well as cheese for the commander of their unit. The Israelites were involved in a battle against the Philistines in the area of Sokoh with the two sides occupying two hills and a valley between them, Scripture states.

The same chapter tells how David slew Goliath, with the Israelites scoring a major victory.
2. Who was the high priest who was a son of Aaron and played a prominent role in the life of Joshua? (Joshua 14:1)

Answer: Eleazar

Eleazar, the son of Aaron and a nephew of Moses, was the high priest. According to Scripture, he ascended to the position after the death of his father.
Leviticus 10 tells of Elezar's brothers being struck dead for offering "profane fire" to the LORD with Eleazar and his brother Ithamar being named as their replacements. Numbers 20:28 tells of Aaron dying and Moses putting the priestly garments on Eleazar. Joshua 14 goes on to tell of Joshua and Eleazar dividing up tracts of land in Canaan for the twelve tribes. And the deaths of both Joshua and Eleazar are recorded in Joshua 24.
3. Who was the minor prophet who wrote the book that appears after Nahum and before Zephaniah in the Hebrew Bible and in the English Bible?

Answer: Habakkuk

The correct answer is Habakkuk with his book of prophecy appearing eighth of the twelve Minor Prophets. (In the Hebrew Bible, the books are known as the Twelve Prophets.)

According to the Website Christiananswers.net, Habakkuk means 'embrace'. However, the Website reports little is known about Habakkuk's personal history.

Here's the order the books appear in the Twelve Prophets, or the Minor Prophets: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.

(According to Wikipedia, the Septuagint of the Eastern churches has this order: Hosea, Amos, Micah, Joel, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. Wikipedia goes on to state the Septuagint of the Eastern churches also puts the Minor Prophets before, instead of after, the 'Major Prophets'.)
4. According to Judges 3:9, who was the younger brother of Caleb and the first of Israel's judges?

Answer: Othniel

Othniel was the first judge of Israel. He was the younger brother of Caleb and his father was Kenaz. His wife was Achsah. Judges 3:10-11, in the NKJV Bible, states: "The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim. So the land had rest for forty years.

Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died."
5. According to Numbers 13:7, which one of these men was part of the group of twelve spies Moses sent on a scouting mission into Canaan?

Answer: Igal

Igal is one of the twelve spies Moses sent into Canaan to explore the land. All the spies, with the exception of Joshua and Caleb, came back with unflattering reports about the land. Scripture states the ten spies who gave unfavorable reports died of a plague before the LORD. The story of the twelve spies is told in Numbers 13 and 14.

Details about the names of the spies can be found in Numbers 13:1-10. The passage in the NKJV states:

"And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.'

"So Moses sent them from the Wilderness of Paran according to the command of the LORD, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel. Now these were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur; from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori; from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh; from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph; from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun; from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu; from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi; from the tribe of Joseph, that is, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi; from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli; from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael; from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi; from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

"These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua."
6. Scripture tells of a rebellion against Moses who was leading the Israelites after their exodus out of Egypt. The rebellion resulted in incidents of divine retribution in which people were swallowed up by the ground or killed by a plague, as per Numbers 16. Scripture goes on to state Moses commanded a man to run into the midst of an assembly with a censer with fire on it to make an atonement for the people to stop the divinely-inspired plague. Who was the man who did the running for Moses? (Numbers 16:47)

Answer: Aaron

Aaron is the correct answer. It's a long story, but the LORD turned dramatically against the Israelites who stubbornly refused to follow Moses' leadership. In fact, Korah and his cohorts were swallowed up by the ground.

Numbers 16:31-34, in the NKJV Bible, tells what happened: "...the ground split apart under them, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and all the men with Korah, with all their goods. So they and all those with them went down alive into the pit; the earth closed over them, and they perished from among the assembly. Then all Israel who were around them fled at their cry, for they said, 'Lest the earth swallow us up also!'"

Verse 35 goes on to state that 250 men who were offering incense were consumed when fire came out from the LORD. By the time you read down to verse 49, no less than 14,700 people had died from a plague "in the Korah incident."

Numbers 16:46-50 tells of peace being restored to the Israelite camp after Aaron followed Moses' orders to run into the midst of an assembly with a censer with fire on it to make atonement for the people. The passage sates: "So Moses said to Aaron, 'Take a censer and put fire in it from the altar, put incense on it, and take it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from the LORD. The plague has begun.' Then Aaron took it as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and already the plague had begun among the people. So he put in the incense and made atonement for the people. And he stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped. Now those who died in the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died in the Korah incident. So Aaron returned to Moses at the door of the tabernacle of meeting, for the plague had stopped."
7. Out of the four names below, which one was a daughter of Job in the latter days of his life, as per Job 42:14?

Answer: Keren-Happuch

The correct answer is Karen-Happuch. She had two sisters -- Jemimah and Keziah -- as well as seven brothers. (The names of the brothers are not given in Scripture.) According to Job 42:15, Job's daughter's were extremely beautiful. The verse, in the NKJV, states: "In all the land were found no women so beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers."
8. Saul was the first king of Israel. Who was the second? (No, David is not the answer.)

Answer: Ishbosheth

Similar to many people, I once had the mistaken belief David was the second king of Israel, replacing Saul. However, before David ascended to the throne, Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, was proclaimed as king, reigning for two years. 2 Samuel 2:8-10, in the NKJV Bible, states: "But Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul's army, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim; and he made him king over Gilead, over the Ashurites, over Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over all Israel. Ishbosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. Only the house of Judah followed David."

Basically a civil war erupted as Judah remained loyal to David. The story continues on into the fifth chapter of 2 Samuel with Ishbosheth being killed and David becoming king. (In the NIV, the king's name appears as Ish-Bosheth.)

It was a dramatic rise to power for David who was seen simply as a shepherd boy until he slew Goliath. Ironically, Saul spent the latter part of his life attempting to kill David simply out of jealousy. Saul would die by committing suicide on the battlefield. When David became king, Israel enjoyed the beginning of a golden era that would continue through to the end of the reign of Solomon. The story of Saul and David takes up much of the Books of Samuel, but Ishbosheth did have his moment in the limelight.
9. The first angel to be referred to by name in the Book of Daniel is Gabriel. Who is the second angel mentioned by name in this book? (Daniel 10:13)

Answer: Michael

Michael is the correct answer with his first appearance reported in Daniel 10:13. Gabriel, however, is named in Daniel 8:16. A number of incidents involving angels can be found in the Old Testament before the book of Daniel, but the angels are not mentioned by name.

Incidentally, excluding Satan, a fallen angel, Michael and Gabriel are the only angels mentioned by name in the Old Testament (not counting the Apocrypha). Both angels are also mentioned in the New Testament. Michael is mentioned in Jude and Revelation while Gabriel is referred to in Luke.
10. Now take the first letter of each answer to come up with the nine-letter name of a king found in the Old Testament of the KJV, NKJ and NIV.

Answer: Jehoiakim

Jehoiakim is the correct answer. According to 2 Kings 23:36, Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king of Judah, reigning for eleven years in Jerusalem. He was the son of Josiah and his mother's name was Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah.
